As for this comic…
Really not much to be said. I am aware that the significance of this revelation loses its potency if you don’t know who Elizabeth Taylor is, and I’m sure some insanely large percentage of my readership doesn’t know who Elizabeth Taylor is, but I don’t care. She’s only quite possibly the second most famous actress ever to come out of Hollywood. Google her.
Those who do know who Elizabeth Taylor is will be wondering about the logistics of all this, but it’ll be explained soon.
I was on the fence whether to have the portrait out of frame, or whether to actually try my hand at drawing a real person adapted into the Puck style. In the end I opted to be brave, though I’m not entirely sure the result is a success. Oh well. When you’re trying to draw one of the most beautiful women the world has ever produced, you have to expect some level of failure, I guess.
Oh, and in other news, there’s been a bunch of new Puck fan art sent my way, including a bikini-clad Puck pinup! SEE IT HERE if you haven’t already!
Oh cool you put my fan art up?!I love the puck style and I think you did exceptionally well with Elizabeth Taylor in that picture. My mom was obsessive in her watching of the lady and so I can’t wait to see how you fit Satan into that rabid clusterpuck that was her life.
Oh I am Amanda Robertson btw 🙂
Thanks for making that great pic of Daphne/Tyler offspring. And yeah, I don’t think that Elizabeth Taylor will feature prominently in the comic. I just like the implication that the rabid clusterpuck that was her life at one time included a failed marriage to Satan.
Pale skin, black hair and purple eyes and may have dated God so of course Satan being Satan at the time would want a shot at that. But on the topic of family since we’ve seen Phoebe’s and Colin’s I wonder if the Fae part of Puck’s family will show up? I can totally seen Titania and Oberon being like a horrible conglomeration of my big fat Greek wedding and Gypsies and surly Irish. So much Puck in that last sentence I can’t even…
Yeah, it’s got lots of crazy possibilities, but I think I’m going to keep a Puck side of the family out of the picture. I don’t need any more excuses to get silly.
I can see the resemblance. Here’s to Phoebe and the legion of future ex-Mr. Phoebes!
For a long time people inquired about Phoebe’s mother, which made me do some thinking. And it was actually a few years ago that I came to this conclusion, based solely on the fact that Elizabeth Taylor is the only other woman with pale skin, black hair and purple eyes that I’ve ever heard of. And no, this certainly doesn’t bode well for Phoebe’s marital future, though something tells me that Phoebe is cut from a different cloth than both her father and her mother.
Haha! This is hilarious.
It wasn’t too many comics ago that I was mourning ETs’ passing and you said you retconned it.
I’ve finally reached that story line. 😀
It offered too many comic possibilities for me to pass up.
Elizabeth Taylor is Phoebe’s mother?
…
I have way too little trouble seeing that.
Guess I’m too used to it by now to be too surprised about most things.
Somehow, for me, it was the only explanation for Phoebe’s mom that made sense. It might partially be based upon the fact that Elizabeth Taylor is the only other woman with pale skin, black hair and purple eyes that I know of.
You know that purple eyes are a myth and she wore contacts right?
Yeah. She actually had dark blue eyes, which can sort of look purple in the right light. The only people who actually have purple eyes are albinos.
On the show “God, the Devil, and Bob,” Elizabeth Taylor dated God…
Exactly. She’s dated everyone, and married half of them. Why not throw Satan in the mix?
Heh, and of Course, he’d be obsessed with her.
Only two women I know of out of that era (well, any era actually come to think of it) that the men in their lives were just not able to “put down” once they got a taste… Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.
Both ladies were forever loved even After They’d moved on. Well I suppose a modern example might be Farrah Fawcett. She seemed to have Nearly the same sort of power.
Bless their souls. We’ve not seen the like of them again since. [sighs]
True. The funny thing with Liz Taylor was the fact that she was quite candid in later interviews about how terrible she was to some of her husbands too. So that was some powerful motivation.
It’s a pretty fair rendition of her in your style, and the fact that, at her peak, she was one of the most stunning women who ever lived, might explain if you feel you fell a tiny bit short 🙂
That’s my primary defense. I’m sticking to it.
Ever seen Transformers the movie which came out in 1986? I’ve seen it and it’s quite good.
So the part about Phoebe being decades old has not fully sept into Daphne’s mind yet?
I expect Daphne knew. She knew her ‘Aunt Phoebe’ way back when Puck was at university x
Yeah, a number of readers have assumed that Phoebe is in her teens and I can’t blame them. She’s … not terribly mature, really.
Well, I would have pegged her as being in her 20s, based solely on appearance.
Speaking of age, what I want to know is how does *Daphne* know who Elizabeth Taylor was? I mean, I’ve *heard* of her, but I wouldn’t have recognized a picture of her, and I’m at least twice Daphne’s age.
(P.S. If you think Liz Taylor’s the *second* most famous actress of all time, who do you think is the first? My guess is Audrey Hepburn, am I right?)
P.P.S. I’ve got an Aunt Phoebe too, incidentally.
That’s unusual. The name doesn’t see a lot of use in the real world, I find. (There’s a bunch of fictional Phoebes, but real ones are rare.)
After reading the rest of the comments, I realized that Marilyn Monroe is a far more likely candidate for most famous actress of all time. In my defense, I’ve seen at least a half dozen of Audrey Hepburn’s movies (one of which, Charade, is among my top three most favoritest movies ever) whereas I’ve only seen one of Monroe’s (The Prince and the Showgirl).
Monroe would definitely qualify as the most famous actress of the 20th century, I’d say. Taylor would be an undisputed second, and a lot of that might be due to her stormy personal life that was tabloid fodder at a time when many Hollywood types kept their lives out of the public eye. Hepburn would probably be third on that list. You could argue second place for her, but not first. I don’t even like Marilyn Monroe, but there’s no arguing her cultural weight.
Daphne is a worldly, worldly girl. She wears t-shirts that refer to obscure Godzilla movies from the early 70’s. I think she might know who Elizabeth Taylor is.
You’ve never seen “Some like it hot”!? It’s one of the funniest films ever made AND it has Marilyn Monroe singing “I wanna be kissed by you”. Watch it asap –you won’t regret it.
A classic.
Well, Phoebe’s decades old: three decades old(ish). More about the timeline will be revealed in the next comic, but yeah, Phoebe is about the same age as Colin.
Phoebe is the name of the Chief’s niece in Get Smart.
Liz Taylor is Phoebe’s mom/ Well, that explains a lot
I felt it fit in an oddly perfect way.
Come to think of it, Phoebe doesn’t actually *say* it’s a portrait of Elizabeth Taylor…Daphne says it…maybe it’s someone who just *looks* like Elizabeth Taylor…
Nah, it is. Though more on the exact nature of this in the next strip…
Liz Taylor? I remember as a kid watching those old films she starred in and having a thing for those thick dark eyebrows of her’s. Love, love women with brows like that.
My boy Satan picks well. Phoebe should be grateful for the genes.
Lol Mom? Liz Taylor is her mom? o.o
Yes indeed.
Dun dun duuuuuuuuuuun!
Yeah, it feels like this twist is leading to something big, but really it’s more of an amusing aside. I’m not soap operatic enough to manage a big payoff for this.
Liz Taylor starred in the Flintsones movie as Fred’s mother-in-law.
True. Not sure whether it was her last movie role, but it’s the last I remember.
I think if you had made her eyes violet instead of dark then she would have been easier to recognize. But I think you did really well with characterizing her beauty!! And I love the future story implications of her being Phoebe’s mother! 😀
The eyes actually are violet, but the image is unfortunately way too small in this format to see that. Curse this low resolution!
Orson Welles was the voice of Unicron in Transformers the Movie it’s the very last role he had before he died in 1985.
I have the feeling that Daphne would be delighted with the portrayal of herself in the voting incentive.
How about devoting a Puck voting incentive to the expression Guys don’t make passes at Girls who wear glasses.
I’ll go call JAKE ENGLISH, he’s a big fan of her too for some reason. (oh wait, you probably dunno who JAKE ENGLISH is. Put it simply, He’s the Alpha Verse version of JADE HARLEY in Homestuck, and he shows up in ACT 6. Don’t try reading Homestuck, you’ll get addicted.)
I have students addicted to Homestuck. I run ads on the MS Paint Adventures site. I have warm fuzzies for the comic, but I’ve avoided reading it out of fear that I might like it.
I wonder if Miranda and Daphne will have sibling rivalry issues when they’re older.
Wait, given what is know about Liz Taylor, and that she did not seem to be seen with Phoebe after birth, I have a funny feeling that Eddie Fisher is Phoebe’s actual father! (Just so that you can add a ton more Star Wars references about her half-sister…)
Oh God, twist a few words around from “Return of the Jedi” and you have one right there…
Wouldn’t account for the horns. But hey, weirder things have happened. And I need no excuse to add more Star Wars refs. The comic’s awash in them already. Why not add more?
I had to Google “Elizabeth Taylor” as I had no idea who it was. After Googling, I still have no idea who it was. I guess it is one of those things I was never meant to know.
Cancel ET (Elizabeth Taylor).
Google Julie Newmar as CATWOMAN !
There’s a gal who’ll Curl your Whiskers !
ME-OW !
Agreed. Julie Newmar is my Helen of Troy. If, like Faust, I’m given the chance to time travel and go through history to find the most beautiful woman of all time, I’m going back to 1967. I’m grabbing Julie Newmar and Peggy Lipton. And then I’m out.
Phoebe: “…Are you so shocked that my father, Satan, Prince of Darkness… married a lady celebrity at least a full order of magnitude LESS famous than himself? As opposed to whom, really?”
Daphne: “…I was thinking about that backwards, wasn’t I?”
Phoebe: “Little bit.”
Liz Taylor is above Satan IMHO.
I dunno… Depends how you’re calculating “fame”. He’s been a featured character in a lot of books. For centuries.
True. He wins by length of cultural relevance.
And she wins by count of screen appearances (…maybe? The Devil’s been in his share of movies too… granted not with the same face every time).
Matching hair tones, skin tones, lip colour.
EG DID go to the effort to make the resemblance believable to the audience.
…Which might have been difficult if Elizabeth had been a blonde or something… Well actually EG probably just would have chosen a different celebrity.
The connection just made sense to me. It was the purple eyes that sealed the deal. Though Liz’s weren’t really purple. Just a very striking deep blue.
I can’t tell if anyone on this page has an eye colour at all, at this resolution.
No, not in this comic. But Phoebe has purple eyes, canonically speaking.
