As for this comic…
A word from the book of Kevin Bacon: “From the oldest of times, people danced for a number of reasons. They danced in prayer or so that their crops would be plentiful or so their hunt would be good. And they danced to stay physically fit and show their community spirit. And they danced to celebrate. And that, that is the dancing that we’re talking about.”
Praise be to Bacon.
So how many degrees of Kevin Bacon is this?
One degree, man. One degree.
Really, I just thought that it was Travolta with breakfast meat.
Besides, been wondering where you’ve been Hitori.
Sorry, I didn’t look back to get the spelling right Hitokiri.
I had a friend with a Bacon-number of 1 … but I haven’t spoken to her in ages. Shame really.
I hope Puck will make use of Sun Tzu often.
This is a really impressive use of Sun Tzu already.
“To win in a thousand battle is not a sign of greatness. True greatness lies in defeating the enemy without ever starting a fight.”
She won this battle. And as a result a thousand more are not going to happen.
See? Advanced military strategy in action!
Well, technically she did start a fight; she just didn’t participate in it.
Success! Success and glorious dancing!
Hey, sometimes you just gotta dance.
Was there a DDR in the movie theater lobby?
Something tells me one should never say “never”, and that Puck may still run into her in-laws again sometime in the future…
I think there’s almost a 100% chance that we’ll be seeing them again. Just not for a while.
-snort- father doesn’t look all that upset
I wanted to get that male “Enh, whatever” look going on with the dad. I think I succeeded.
The ambivalence of daddy dearest will not soon be forgotten
He is one of those men who live life as a rock buffeted by the storms of other people. In other words, he just don’t care.
Honey badger don’t care.
In panel 2 and 3, Puck shows off her moves and her curves… she is a hotty. No anorexic or skinny bony legs there…YUMM, YUMMM.
Hotty or not, I have to say that I’m not a fan of the style that’s popular amongst some of the animu imitator crowd that shows all female characters with super-thin legs. Here’s the truth of the matter: there are almost no females over the age of fifteen who have those insanely thin legs. (Well, the anorexic ones, yes, but these drawn characters never look anorexic otherwise.) I personally think the thin legs don’t look right.
Puck looks fit, but not superhumanly so, especially in panel 3.
That’s a fair assessment. She’s ‘carrying baby around’ fit, but not ‘going to the gym’ fit. Really, of all the characters I draw, I’m only actively trying to generate the ‘hits the gym regularly’ look with Tracee. She has that short, strong, mesomorphic build.
HEY! She can dance if she wants to, she can leave her in-laws behind,
cause her in-laws don’t dance, and if they don’t dance……
I see what you did there…
And I approve. Well done.
Well, they’re no friends of mine.
I am totally adding “I don’t give a creamed crap” to my repertoire of snappy sayings! AWESOME!
It’s different from ‘creamy crap’, of course. ‘Creamed crap’ has been artificially mashed into a creamy consistency.
Yes, praise be to bacon.
Not the proper noun. I just really like bacon.
Who doesn’t? I do. If there’s ever a fundraiser where you get to eat a big bacon brunch with Kevin Bacon, I’m there.
I forget. Just what abhorrent city *are* they in?
Hamilton, ON. It’s like the Baltimore of Canada.
Ah. Well, with that bend in Lake Ontario there was bound to be something there. Bad luck that it happened to be Hamilton.
I’m more familiar with Milton than I am with Hamilton.
But if I remember correctly, the last time I was in Hamilton, I got a little lost & ended up at an intersection of some one-way roads. where each one directed traffic towards the interaction & none of them directed traffic away from the intersection.
I honestly wouldn’t call Hamilton the strangest place I’ve been to, but that intersection & the part of town I found that had street signs the size of small cars, puts it pretty far up the list
You were in the east end, I bet. (Not far from Puck’s hood, actually.) The streets make no sense in Hamilton, mostly because they were planned out in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, haphazardly, and before cars were even a thing. If you don’t know exactly where you’re going and what road to take, you’re doomed. Most navigation computers won’t help you either because they can’t make heads or tails of the weird intersecting one-way corridors that randomly begin and end in weird places.
It is not the strangest place you’ve ever been to. But it’s up there. That’s a very, very accurate description.
That would explain why Colin’s parents are exiting Stage Right despite the directions stating Stage Left…
All depends on what the front of the stage is, I guess. I don’t even get my own metaphor, so I’m not going to offer any opinions.
“The Baltimore of Canada.” Priceless…
I’m sort of borrowing that from John Waters. He’s a Baltimore native, and when visiting Hamilton he commented on the shocking number of similarities.
I don’t know about Hamilton natives, but in the same vein as Nawlinz (New Orleans) and Luh-vull (Louisville) if you live in Baltimore then you likely say, “Ballimer…
Though they claim they won’t come back again, I have a feeling that they WILL solely to annoy Puck (or to ‘babysit’ Miranda). I use ‘babysit’ rather loosely in this term.
Then again, nothing’s impossible and they’ll actually NOT SHOW BACK UP. I mean, for a while.
Annoying step-parents are basically a must for any comic that can have them.
I think they won’t be back for a while. And ‘a while’ in this comic can mean years, given the slow update schedule.
Actually, before you start that happy dance Puck, I suggest you check that the evil in laws haven’t squirreled away your daughter in an attempt to get there grandchild away from all the “negative” influence.
I think baby’s with dad. Actually, the original plan in this comic had mom-in-law handing baby to Phoebe, but I scratched that because it looked weird. Then I had Puck holding the baby, but that made the happy dance very hard to draw. So I just left out baby.
Colin and Miranda are in the house having father daughter time.
I have to admit, I really did not see this coming. I was expecting the whole time that Puck’s plan was going to backfire in some way.
And yet, in retrospect, it probably could not have worked out any other way.
I guess I’d felt that I’d done enough with the ‘comedic backfiring’ plotlines and wanted to show an unmitigated success. Life affords us so few of them, right? Why not memorialize them in fiction?
Staying alive, staying alive.
If you have to channel anything, it’s always good to channel John Travolta. (Wait, scratch that. That’s terrible advice.)
Especially, judging from your chosen profession, either the Vincent ‘Vinnie’ Barbarino John Travolta or the Danny Zuko John Travolta…
Only problem with this solution is it just begs the involvement of those wonderful, loving, caring, big hearted people at DCF to drop by and say hello “for the safety of the child” of course
If this were reality, those people would have been showing up at Puck’s door the moment she got home from the hospital.
I’m just IN LOVE with your linework here! I usually salivate over your visuals with equal contempt but this week’s strip is really something special. 😉
It’s the citrus-y colors right?
Citrus-y colors that come from the ‘don’t use these’ section of the RGB palette are my primary weapon. Many color theorists will say I’m wrong, and I am wrong, but I can’t stop using them anyway.
It’s your strip and vision, my friend. Only your rules should apply. I love the unique approach to colors here.
It works.
So much for any hopes of Nana and Grampa pitching in to babysit when you desperately need to sleep, Puck… Never mind hopes of any other kind of support.
In the meantime, I still hope the cash Tracee gave Puck will go towards relocating to a better neighbourhood. Or even a better city. Y’know, one where the mayor isn’t a doddering devil.
The money will likely go towards useless purchases of unnecessary things, as all windfalls should. And I don’t think Puck’s hurting for babysitters. They might not be overly willing, but I have a feeling Daphne and Phoebe would know what’s best for them and ‘volunteer’ when asked.
Happy Puck is happy… How often do you get evil number 1 to collide with evil number 2 and drive off evil number 3??
One must be allowed to celebrate overwhelming victories.
Anyone besides me had this music in their heads while she danced?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wGyP68VyPzE
I liked this week’s strip. I feel like Puck was about do for a win. Nice work man.
So did I.
Why not have a Youtube video of Puck doing her happy dance to the Bee gees song Staying Alive.
I dunno! Staying alive doesn’t seem to me like it would be Puck’s theme song…. It just doesn’t feel right somehow.
Maybe something Like “New Attitude” (Patti LaBelle) which might be her choice, or “I Love you, I’ll Kill You” (Enigma) which would be Everyone else in the household’s choice for her, would be more appropriate…
I love the idea of a theme song video for her though!
Well, theme songs are cool though I doubt I’d ever scrounge together enough time to do a video. “New Attitude” would potentially work. I’ve held a belief (dating back since the late 90’s) that Puck’s spiritual song of encouragement is ‘Funkytown’, but if I had to point to a theme song, like the song that would start an episode, it would have to be “Double Helix” by Anamanaguchi.
Spiritual song of encouragement: Funkytown…
I have been laughing my arse off all day over that!
I just heard “Holding out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler the whole time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f_HsjpSVaI
‘Funkytown’… outstanding…
But since my geek card is up for renewal in Feb. I feel obliged to offer the thought that Puck’s happy song might well be some sort of bizarre fairy tune… Parts of which may not even be audible to mere humans. Or, some 550 year old, extremely bawdy Flemmish drinking song… Or maybe just some ad jingle…
Ad jingle sounds most likely of the above.
It’s is funny that panel three sort of looks like a mirror time of the release poster of the movie Saturday Night Fever, However, The BeeGee’s song that Travolta single-handedly tears up the dance floor in that movie is actually called “You Should Be Dancing” so yeah, it works if Gekko can put out a Youtube Video of Puck’s disco-like dancing…
“Stayling Alive” as a background song, only works is you are strutting to opening credits…
“Funkytown” – Original Lipps Inc version or the Pseudo Echo cover? Hopefully Puck’s tastes is the same as everyone else’s.
Original Funkytown, man. No substitutes. But yeah, I drew all dance poses in this comic completely without reference (as I draw everything in this comic), so any similarity to the iconic Saturday Night Fever image probably just has to do with the recesses of my mind dredging that image up subconsciously.
Well, we are safe in assuming that Puck’s Theme song will never be anything from C + C Music Factory…!
Yeah, that would more be Phoebe’s song.
This . . . this is a bite me dance.
The best kind of dance!
And totally appropriate in the circumstances.
