The Phoebe date story continues, and we meet Phoebe’s potential date: Craig Wallington. Now, Craig Wallington was done as an homage to my friend Chris Watson, then head editor of the Silhouette and all-around campus celebrity. On a campus of 20 000 plus students, a good half of them could have picked ole Watson out from a crowd. That made him a good candidate for appearing with a cameo in the series.
There’s a little bit of an in-joke here, because Watson had a particular obsession with our girl Phoebe. Of course, I’m flipping that on its head here, but that’s part of the fun.
This is another strip where the last line works magic.
I was hoping Phoebe was being set up witch Mitch Conner.
No such luck.
I’m re-reading the strip on Webtoon, but came back here to check whether this guy was a cameo – sort of…
Yeah, this was my old newspaper editor, and a really funny guy. I often wonder what happened to him; alas, he has a very common name which makes it really difficult to track him down online.
Why not drop him a line through the old campus newspaper vine?
Is there an old campus newspaper vine? I don’t think it exists. Honestly, even my old campus newspaper is unrecognizable compared to what it was twenty years ago. In my day, it was a full page newsprint paper with, like, tons of content. It was a big, fat, crazy source of free entertainment, and the content was wildly unpredictable. There weren’t really censors or anything. Now the McMaster Silhouette is a sad shadow of what it was: it’s a magazine-style glossy with only a few paltry pages in it, and every article looks like it was “run through corporate for approval” or something. Just glancing at it makes me very, very sad.
