Sometimes I hate myself.
Sometimes an idea pops into my head, and I think, “Heh. That would be funny.” I don’t think about the amount of work it would require to draw or any of the logistics in executing the strip. I only think about that stuff AFTER I’ve started and the suffering has begun.
So this is one of those times I bit off more than I could chew. The joke is a soft parody on a memorable scene from Empire Strikes Back. (I really have to stop the Star Wars references.) The concept just struck me as screamingly funny, and I had to do it. I cracked open my Empire Strikes Back storybook (publication date 1980) and got studying. I even included 2-1B, the medical droid from Hoth. Now THAT’S nerdy!
I really had to work at that reaction pic of Daphne in the last panel. It’s really hard to draw a picture that suggests someone is going to momentarily spit out what’s in her mouth but hasn’t quite gotten around to it. I think I succeeded.
I can’t imagine it being capable of doing a proper spit-take. The coffee would probably just dribble around the edges of its fat lip… possibly spray up its nose a bit.
Well, the frequency of characters drinking in movies when hearing shocking things does seem to be unusually high.
‘it’? Jeez, man.
also, for the record, they all seem to have the same sized bottom lip, so again, this is all your own ridiculous prejudice
They do all have the same size of bottom lip. The issue actually wasn’t her bottom lip but her lack of top lip, which made the bottom lip more prominent.
Around strip 200, I started to try and address this issue by adding a slight thickness to the line of her upper lip. Then I went to drawing her with a legitimate upper lip. In my mind, it does look better now.
It is definitely better here than it was at first. I agree.
There really WAS a severely prominent lower lip at first, as well as an unhealthy angling of the neck and a pot-belly. You’ve definitely fixed most of that by this stage.
BUT… yeah, she still looks very… underbitey.
Still, I’ve also noticed that nobody notices when I say something positive, but everyone gets into a frothing rage whenever I say anything negative. Seems a bit hypocritical of them.
You may notice that late (around strip 200) that I start giving Daphne a real upper lip. Because I did feel that the no upper lip thing was a bit odd visually.
I think you are chill. I just don’t post that much.
Holy carp, I started laughing in panel 2, and kept laughing harder each panel… For what it’s worth, all the time and effort involved in the creation of this is appreciated; I keep re-reading it and laughing, and I’ve decided that it’s the high note I want to end my overly-long day on, so thank you for that! ^_^
This one is one of my favourite scenes thus far. 21B forever, man.
I want one of those tanks!
That’s what healing is all about, man.
Alt text – “It’s not working! Give me a 500 cc shot of espresso, STAT!” 500cc=1/2 litre – that’s quite a shot!
Well, you need a big needle.
We used to joke about needing a coffee IV.
Well, the real thing would be lethal. And yet, somehow… tantalizing all the same…
In my head, Daphne holds that almost spit-take for a moment, then shrugs and swallows. Caffeine trumps grossness. 😉
True. For me, caffeine trumps everything.
Why, Hello there, Dr. Ponytail in the back pushing the button…
What’chyou doin’, tonight?
Something about her look is alluring. 😀
Not actually my character design. This was a single instance where I placed another person’s OCs in cameo roles. I stopped that pretty early in.
Had the same reaction for some reason. Yowza.
funny, this comic came up, and the ad wiuth it was for the Star wars RPG. makes you wonder don’t it?
Panel 4 is purrfect !
I’m glad you think. Hard to frame that sort of thing.
Doctor Kaffe has a couple of mighty fine-looking Nurses working for him !
LOL. Phoebe is such a ditz sometimes; okay, all the time. I can’t help but laugh at her.
Some would say it’s endearing. Others might call it infuriating. Either or.
Puck has succumbed to lure of the bean. I hear the older one gets, the more influence caffeine has on the body and mind. Since Puck is over 600 years old, that explains a lot. 😉
Huh. I feel that old people get suckered into the lure of the tea.
