IT’S ANOTHER MONTH OF RERUNS!!!
This November we’ll be taking a trip down memory lane and looking at a bunch of costumes from previous Halloweens. A new (old) incentive will pop up every few days, so…
As for this comic…
There are, of course, video games that offer the blind some entertainment value. Maybe visual novels with full voice-acting? Maybe? Games with an emphasis on the music? But when you’re talking about most shooters, the aural experience is pretty awful: lots of shots and grunts and footsteps and maybe some repetitive speech lines. Heck, you don’t have to be blind to be driven crazy by it; just being in the same room as a non-player and listening to the incessant audio feed can sometimes slowly eke away at your sanity.
Which is why I’m increasingly a fan of headphones.
Hannah is obviously not someone who ever got into video games, nor has ever hung out with other people who were willing to rope her in.
The thing with blind people and video games, they need helpers to provide audio input and output to counter lack of visuals.
One example was a game of World of Warships which I saw on YouTube, which was apparently being played by a blind person.
She controlled then ships speed and direction, and had helpers using the mouse for the guns, and providing all the information with her calling the shots. Essentially acting as the captain of the ship, being told what was happening, making a decision, and having her orders carried out. Which is basically what a real life ship captain does.
Of course, WoWS is a niche game, so that sort of play is not going to appeal to everyone, but It’s one example.
That’s cool. Sounds elaborate and very difficult to manage, but cool.
That might get an arc. It might deserve an arc if Hannah can justify it by going compleetly off the rails.
I’m thinking that they both have the same expressions in panel three.
I’m also guessing that Daphne never had anything besides teen drinks or the similar beverage for each age group since the ice pop debacle. Like, kool aid, Capri sun, tang, Metamucil, NRG drinks. Or if she did have tea, it was larger than a half liter.
I feel that Hannah is the type to enjoy many sorts of adult drinks. Including those she’s not legally allowed to.
Someone needs to introduce Hannah to audio games.
Perhaps this speedrun of Manamon 2 could help?
Dev website: VGStorm
That’s awesome. Thumbs up.
Popcorn ASMR sim doesn’t work too well. The smell’s part of the experience, after all.
I’m sure there are videos on YouTube nevertheless.
Popping packing bubble-wrap is always a great audio experience/therapy…
Seems to be a thing.
You could listen to music together…I hear people used to get together and play records, back in the days before iPods and such..
Next comic.
That awkward phase when your new friend and you try to figure out what you have for common interests.
When in doubt, fall back on the common ground of humanity: grain-based foodstuffs.
Staff of life.
Something tells me that Daphne should have books In braille just in case of situations like this one…
I think (with the increasing role of tech) that many blind people don’t even have Braille books.
“Wow, this murder mystery is really violent”
“That’s not a murder mystery, that’s a cheese grater”
Yeah, audiobooks have probably really cut into the braille market.
I know this is just a fun webcomic, but if anyone is interested in video games for people with all sorts of disabilities including blindness, there is https://caniplaythat.com/2021/10/21/5-games-for-blind-and-visually-impaired-players/
Thanks for sharing.
Something tells me that Daphne should turn the controls over to Hannah.
“So what do you like to do?”
“Well, sight is just one sense. There are others with which we may play …. I bet you can’t figure out how to open this box.”
The best games are box-based games.
I’m terrible at Hellraiser parodies…..
Makes me think of the scene in UHF.
Blind guy usiing a Rubik’s cube. “Is this it?”
Homeless guy sitting beside him: “Nope.”
“Is this it?”
“Nope.”
“Is this it?”
“Nope.”
A classic.
considering the amount of time I spend on my computer playing video games I’m not sure what I’d do if I lost my sight.
Go outside, maybe? Terrifying to think about.
You do realize that “outside” is much less interesting and much more dangerous without the sigh?
But think of the feel of that fresh grass under your bare feet!
Nerve damage on my feet can’t go without soles of some kind.
Yes well, Daphne is making an effort. And it’s I’ll level, not Ill level, which is either an off-kilter balance beam or that one level in games that’s always a slog . . . anyway, what we have here with Daph and Hannah is the calm before the storm . . . . wonder if there’ll be another Moment Of Colin, as in the previous arc.
Ooh. Good catch of missing apostrophe. Gotta fix.
“There’s this other game I play. It’s called ‘Evading Parental Oversight’.”
“Oh, yes, that’s my favorite!”
Best game.
Well, she’s trying. And man, figuring out what to do with another person’s hard. I’m lucky I like cribbage or my Saturdays would be bare.
I wish I knew what cribbage really was. I have gathered that it is some form of game, maybe with cards?
Yes. Yes it is.

Just a little bit.
Ok, so she’s not like Wu Zi Mu from GTA: San Andreas.
Never played that one. My GTA games were GTA 1 and 2. You know, the ones that no one else ever played.
I didn’t get a console until the 64 era, then I got the PS2 after that.
Amusingly enough, I only played copies owned by friends for those GTA games. I snagged them on Steam and got around to playing them a few years ago. You really get to appreciate the references when you’re older. (like in Vice City.. drove past it a million times as a kid.. but that’s the mansion from Scarface).
In San Andreas, Wu Zi Mu (or ‘Woozie’) was a blind Chinese Triad leader. But he’s often seen doing bafflingly crazy things.. I mean, you meet him after a rally race. He was driving. In a later scene, he’s seen beating Carl at a video game.. somehow. Other times his men let him win at stuff like mini golf or blackjack. One time he ran into a wall (ironically, after you cut the power as part of a heist plan) and thought they changed the layout in anticipation. He seems to be able to aim a gun, as he does participate in the armed raid. Realistically, he can’t swim since he can’t navigate, but he knows how to tread water. At one point, he just used simple deduction that one of the poker chips he was handed was a counterfeit.. because they handed him two different chips.
They call him “Lucky Mole” for a reason. One of the nicer cast members, too.
Sorry, should have cut that up.
Huh. You know, I never thought about how my favorite hobby is borderline inaccessible to someone who is legally blind. So much of gaming is visually oriented.
In fact, I think that deaf people have an easier time playing games for that reason, though even they would struggle with certain genres. Horror games, for example.
There are, I suppose, some games that are designed for the blind, but most games are pretty inaccessible. Audio is usually optional, though. I am known to game with the mute on, just to not bother other people.
I imagine one of the most accessible game genres for blind people are text adventure games, aka interactive fiction.
The Incentive is simply amazing !
And old!
Not Old – Vintage !
Collectrors understand the older, the better.
CY does not sell “Old” comics.
Vintage is just a fancy word for “old but people still want it for some reason”. For that reason, the term seldom applies to people.
Will we see Krampus and the Yule Cat this year ?
And nothing says Christams like Monkee-Bears !
Not sure. Got a plan that I’ll be posting to Patreon soon. May provide space for such things.
Probably before their time, but here’s a video of the song (and dance) “Popcorn”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfdLh0MHqKw
I wish all girls talked as frankly and directly as Hannah. 🙂
They do exist.
Yes, they do. (And so do guys like me who have trouble giving a straight answer.) :))
