Thus concludes the stick figure Puck saga. Not sure if it’s ending with a whimper or a bang, but it’s what you get. Nothing says ‘fresh’ like jokes ripped from 60 year old Looney Tunes cartoons! Those of you who are wondering how Satan is messing with the fiber of his own universe from within the confines of that universe are, quite frankly, thinking WAY too hard about this.
And now comes the REAL challenge: I now have to produce real Puck comics over the next few weeks, which promise to be the most harrowing, busy weeks of my life. Just to give you guys a heads up, I might miss an update or resort to guest comics or something. It’s been a bad few months, but my time constraints will be over soon. I hope.
MAY VOTING INCENTIVE! MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU – NEW INCENTIVE EVERY WEEK!!!
It’s May, and it’s time to get seasonally appropriate by ringing in May the Fourth in traditional Star Wars fashion. This year we’re going new school, with costumes from the new(ish) movies and the Clone Wars TV show. A new costume is dropping every single week. The first two May voting incentive pics has already passed us by, so vote now or you’ll miss this one!
This particular voting incentive is no longer up on TWC, but you can GET IT AT THE STORE, along with all the other incentives, for a few bucks!
I just love how pixel Collin is there in every strip with the same pose like he’s going to punch someone!
Just like in a REAL sprite comic!
Would you believe me if I told you I have never read a sprite comic? xD
Well, there’s certainly a lot of them out there! I think there’s about 25,000 different sprite comics on Smackjeeves alone. (At least it feels like that when you scroll through the comic listings.)
Mu sides. MY SIDES.
Hold tightly. The pain will subside!
now this is funny i get the joke completely.i remember the cartoon.
I believe the episode is ‘Duck Amuck’. It’s a classic.
Bugs had a version of Duck Amuck as well, with Bugs taking Daffy’s place, and Elmer Fudd in place of Bugs.
I remember. It was slightly less funny then. And now I’m doing it a third time, so the funny is waning even further.
The cool thing is that Duck Amuck was deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1999. It’s also one of three cartoons directed by Chuck Jones to receive that honor.
It deserves that honor.
Right up there with the ‘Rabbit season, duck season’ trilogy.
Classics, all.
If you have to rip off, rip off from the best … and it’s not a rip-off, it’s an homage 🙂
T.S. Eliot said that the bad artist borrows; the good artist steals. I’m down with that.
Is the laptop screen doing whatever the opposite of emitting light is?
To quote Milton, “Not light, but darkness visible.” What else would shroud Satan?
I see Satan didn’t reduce himself to a stick figure…
Satan is too classy for that. He would never degrade himself in such a manner. Mind you, he WOULD stoop to making an appearance in one of those creepy CG webcomics where everyone looks like mannequins. Because who doesn’t want to be in one of those?
YESSSSS!!! Satan’s back! There was a point to this abrupt direction. Good one.
Every time I read Satan’s parts in this strip, I always hear Robert Vaughn’s voice in my head saying the lines. 😀
While I think of Peter Fonda. You know, like his role in Ghost Rider?
I would support that motion were it not for the fact that you made reference to the darkest, vilest part of Peter Fonda’s career.
He’s had a Career ?
I mean, since Easy Rider.
(too catty?)
You don’t call Thomas and the Magic Railroad a career? You’re harsh, man. HARSH.
For some reason, I always think of Robert England (aka Freddy Krueger) as a candidate for Satan. Though Robert Vaughn would work too – perhaps the better voice.
i always hear tim curry talking when i read a comic with satan in it, cause he just has that voice
Ooh, that’s even better casting job as Satan. Yeah! TIM CURRY! I mean, he did a great job in Legend, so why not?
I hate to say it, but I give Satan the slimiest lawyer voice I can think of, with an overlay of used car salesman, just to be safe.
Why would you hate to say that? That’s an awesome thing to say.
Still J.K. Simmons for me.
Still makes sense.
How about a Puck vote comic in which Puck and company have near death experiences.
Loved it. High five for not making the stickterlude too long.
Yeah, in terms of my time commitments, it would have been nicer to keep the easy-to-generate stickterlude going longer, but it would have started sucking real soon. As it is, this little foray into stick style has cost me in terms of pageviews.
Now THAT last panel made me sincerely laugh out loud! It all makes sense now! XD
Glad I can deliver the goods!
I just realized we have never seen nor heard of Pheobes mother. Will she appear/be talked about?
Phoebe’s mother is most likely human, and quite possibly connected with the world of Hollywood. Because we all know that town’s been in bed with Satan forever. She’s no longer alive, but she may be talked about in future strips. Here’s a hint! She’s a raven-haired, purple-eyed beauty, just like Phoebe. And she was married to Richard Burton. Twice.
The twice married really gives it away. Thank you, Wikipedia, and that is kind of an awesome background Phoebe has.
Or you can ask an old person! Seriously, any person over the age of 45 would be able to tell you what woman married Richard Burton twice. Gotta love old people.
Well, this is a disappointing way to find out that she’s passed. 🙁
She hasn’t. I retconned it.
Oh. Good.
What is Daphne saying? Google Translate has failed me once again…
“Doki doki” is a Japanese onomatopoeia that represents the sound of a beating heart; it indicates excitement or anxiety. “Panikku” is just a Japanese rendition of the word ‘panic.’ “Doki Doki Panniku” is also the name of a Japanese video game that was the base for the American Super Mario Bros. 2. ‘Pucka-chan’ is, well, you can probably figure that part out.
“Super Mario Bros 2, Puck!” ?
Basically. Which is exactly the level of writing I expect from trashy manga.
Closer to “Raging Heartbeat Panic, Little Puck!” if you use proper transliteration.
That’s perfect, actually. You know your pseudo-Japanese.
Bieru wa doko des ka?
And, that is the extent of my remembered Japanese.
(note; if you told me where it is… I wouldn’t know what you said. 😀 )
That’s more than I know, friend.
Is she turning Japanese?
I really think so.
In the worst possible way.
I suddenly feel like you dislike anime style comics… 😉
I never have any problem with well done anything style comics. Anime style can be cool. It is cool in your comic. You make it your own.
And technically, “puck” in no way could translate as “pucka” in japanese… It should be “pakku-chan”
Nitpick. 😉
Guess how much I know about Japanese? Answer: probably less than you.
Daphne learned all about Japanese language and culture from anime and video games.
It happens to the best of us. And the worst.
Satan would most definitely be using apple products.
Nice touch.
It’s actually an apple with a worm coming out: a subsidiary brand called ‘Bad Apple’. It’s Satan’s first choice.
Oh, that’s pure *GOLD*.
Great little detail – I didn’t notice it at all.
Only “Spade” noticed it 3 years after it was drawn. Well done.
Reheated “Puck” is still great “Puck”
It’s more evident in other comics. I actually posted the logo on my Facebook feed. See? Right here!
Oh Yeah. I love Mario 2!
Kudos for catching the ref.
Stickerlude was hilarious !
🙂
Brilliant denouement! It’s a surprise ending that should be no surprise at all! I wish I’d thought of it. 🙂
A rare stroke of genius.
