Can you say … GUEST COMIC?!?
When I put out an emergency call for a Puck guest comic, I was thrilled to get a response from Emily Ivie (aka mleiv), who is honestly one of my favourite comic artists. Why do I love her work so much? Well, her completed comic The Locked Maze is a thing of beauty. Her newer comic Rotsterarsil (which might now be on indefinite hiatus) is equally wonderful. Her work on Emily & The Strangers, a Dark Horse title, is … well, amazing. Put simply, she’s great, and she’s a major inspiration to me. And now she’s illustrated a Puck strip. My head asplode.
Look at this thing! Dramatic angles! Crazy perspective! The types of shots that I don’t draw because they’re just too HARD! And Phoebe’s wearing leather pants! LEATHER PANTS! How have I let over 180 strips go by without putting Phoebe in leather pants? That obvious oversight has now been addressed.
You can probably tell that the strip was written by me. It has that definitive Gecko humor, for good or for ill. Oh, and for once, I cannot explain Daphne’s shirt for you, because this one was Emily’s idea.

Oh, well THAT one I wrote. I was more talking about Daphne’s t-shirt – which I didn’t write.
A while back I suggested as a Puck vote comic Sun Tzu teaching palace women how to fight as a test of his military skills why not have Daphne wear a shirt that shows this.
actually, it was the emperor’s concubines. at first Sun Tzu couldn’t get them to do anything because they would just giggle every time he said something.
well, he found a way to ensure they listened intently and obeyed instantly (those that survived)

Phoebe’s look has always reminded me of that of the singer Anastasia. Pretty obvious in the comic also.

In College Puck tried her hand at matchmaking and it didn’t work out well how about having her design and build a matchmaking machine.
Love, love, love it! and what a pleasant surprise to find mleiv’s art. Fingers crossed that her hiatus proves to be a short one, because her work is so wonderful.
I love it too. I think there’s lots of fingers crossed here. Sounds like she got dealt a really raw hand by Dark Horse. Hope it gets better for her.

I just noticed this; Daphne looks more like a catgirl than a dog-girl in Emily’s style.
I’m not really sure whether Daphne is more cat or dog. She came out looking more dog-like in my style, but that might have just been an accident. I really didn’t have a particular animal in mind.
It’s my hypothesis that Daphne is the result of a kangaroo getting it on with a dog, and then WHATEVER the result of that pairing getting its DNA mixed with human DNA. Daphne looks like a critter from the Island of Dr. Moreau.
Now THAT’S channeling SotiCoto !

I like this style too, but it’s not mine. This is the awesome work of Emily Ivie, who sadly isn’t doing any comic work now. So even if I wanted to haul her back for another one, I don’t think I could.
Once more, Daphne’s shirt totally rules. Is there anything she can’t do by wearing an appropriate shirt?
This is the only shirt that Daphne ever wore that I didn’t get. I had readers explain it to me, of course, but yeah. She’s even nerdier than me.

Yeah, she took them down a while ago. Sad, really. She made a real stab at trying to go full-time with the whole comic thing, and I loved her stuff so much, and then she just became disillusioned with the whole thing. I really hope she comes back one day.
With patreon.com, she can probably do it.
Maybe. I haven’t been converted to the Patreon cause yet. It’s done some great things for some great people, but I don’t know any of those people personally.

I love, love, love Emily’s visual style. The fact that she’s no longer making comics (to my knowledge) and that this comic was one of the last things she ever did still makes me sad.

But your guest … it’s hard to put into words. Just viewing her drawings is a pleasure. They could be complete nonsense and still bring joy.
It’s a SIN she does not draw anymore. God would be angry at giving such a gift, and she not using it.
(Hey, maybe God doesn’t care at all. But we should try any angle to make her reconsider.)
She had the dream of making comics her profession, and the kicker is that she almost made it. But it was a really rough struggle, and I think it took a toll. Maybe she’ll come back to it in the future. Who knows.

I can buy the Emily Series easily, but if Dark Horse was nasty to mleiv, I am not sure I want my $ to go to them.

While we’ve all been done a service wit Phoebe finally getting leather pants, I think she’s much yummier when you draw her.
Well, glad to have your vote of confidence. It’s apples and oranges, really, I think. Emily’s style and mine are so fundamentally different. I like hers because it’s more unique.
