Yep. It was ten years ago, April 26th, 2011, that I began posting Puck as an actual webcomic. Puck existed before that, of course, but only as a defunct student newspaper comic from my university days. The actual webcomic started ten years ago, on DeviantArt, because that was the only platform I really knew back then. If you’d like, you can SEE THAT ORIGINAL POST HERE, because it’s still up!
It’s been ten years since then. Ten long years, with a new comic every week for every one of those 520 weeks. Okay, I missed one week. But only once. And since then I’ve generated a few bonus comics, so I’ve more than made up for that one lost week.
Anyway, I just wanted to note this auspicious anniversary, such as it is. And also I’d like to note that you people are the only reason this comic has kept going. It’s not the internal motivation (which is lacking, believe me), or the monetary rewards (which are lacking too, though the support on Patreon has been wonderful and it’s thankfully ensured that I at least haven’t been losing money on the comic). More than anything else, it’s the positive feedback and the knowledge that some people out there do enjoy this goofy exercise in stupidity that keep me going.
So thanks for that.
Happy Tenth, EG!
Thank you kindly, friend.
Married and ten years old. I suppose being born on 2/29 has some benefits, except the really long wait to hit 21, or 16 even.
But the State doesn’t want to wait that long, so they’ll give driver’s licenses to four year olds, liquor to five year olds and who knows what else.
Talk about the one percenters… well six hundredths of a percent? Ok, I rounded the hell up.
That leap year math always bothered me.
Happy 10th anniversary!
Thank you!
Many happy returns 🙂 Thanks for the goof.
Co0ngratulations! This is wonderful! I hope you get to celebrate in the way Puck would have intended. She’s your character, of course, but I’m thinking lots of coffee.
This has been fun and I’m glad you’re continuing to work on this.
I look forward to see where our heroes go next.
It just struck me, this iteration of Puck started when Puck found out she had Miranda off-stage. So it’;s reasonable that Miranda’s so CUTE right now.
Yeah, it was an early reviewer of the comic who first noted that motherhood (along with all its wonders and challenges) is really the primary theme of the comic. And that same reviewer noted that this is really sort of unique in the webcomic landscape. I guess that’s what happens when most webcomics are created by people ages 14-24: you don’t get a lot of parenthood comics. But when push comes to shove, that’s what Puck is.
Puck was always a mother. Just . . . not always a very good one. Keeping Mr. Bubbles safe took a lot of her time.
Hey ElectricGecko? Do you think you’ll ever do an uncensored voting incentives PDF release?
Not saying an outright no, but no plans right now. It’s a contentious thing right now with readers. Some people are very pro that and some people are very against it. Seeing as it’s never something I’ve done, I’m more keen to not upset the apple cart right now.
So freaking awesome! I forget how I found Puck, in the first place but I remember that I ordered the PDF book the same day. It has been years since then and I look forward to it every Tuesday!!! Thank you so much for bringing her (and the rest of the crew of course) into our lives.
Thanks for sticking by me all these years. I’ve got a number of readers who are still following along since the very beginning (or close to that) and it’s been amazing.
Condragulations! What a milestone 😀 I’ve been here from the start ( Just about 😛 ) And I enjoy the comic as much if not more. At the worry of rambling, I’ll say congrats again 🙂
Woo! x
Thank you for you dedicated readership, ComicReader.
Amazing! Congratulations.
Onward and … well, not upward, really, but onward!
Thank of the Comic in dog years!! A much more impressive number. Congrats.
Well, true. Let’s think about it in the most impressive terms possible.
“Goofy exercise in stupidity” is the only way I operate. Well done! and Carry on!
Same here. Thanks for the support!
Excellent! Congratulations! And thank you EG!
Thanks! Much appreciated.
Congratulations, and here’s to another 10 years!
Thank ye kindly!
Congratulations! Ten years. Not only is your stamina admirable, the strip just keeps getting better.
That is very kind of you to say. Means a lot.
Any comic workings in the pipeline for you? It’s been year since Inhuman Relations ended…
There are a couple of ideas in the pipeline, waiting for drawing ability to catch up with them.
God speed, friend. God speed.
Congratulations EG, and thanks for all the laughs! 🙂
Thank YOU for following along, good sir.
10 years of giving us all a moment of joy once a week. Thanks!
Until I read the comics above, I hadn’t put it together that this is ultimately about motherhood. At the start of Puck’s Hero’s Journey, she is sitting around, vaguely dissatisfied, until Something Happens to get her on her way – in this case, Daphnie. (in some ways, Miranda fills in the missing years of motherhood – you might call them the diaper years).
This event leads to a series of obstacles to overcome. She does not have a Yoda to teach her what she needs to know, she just has her equally clueless loyal band of helpers, and the ability to recover from disaster; in this, she is like many of us.
Puck may never have a final Boss Quest that defined Beowulf and Luke Skywalker, but in this too she is like most of us. It is enough to live life as well as we can and have a few laughs along the way.
Thanks for being part of your readers’ quests!
Beautifully put, kind sir. Tear on my cheek.
I, my human pets Baldie and Janet, my older evil brother SalemKatte, as well as my mom Jólakötturinn have all been fans since – well, forever.
We adore all the characters in Puck, as well as the fans we have come to love.
Each week we worry about them until they comment. Some never comment again (Susan).
When that happens we pray they simply became too busy to keep up, and that’s all.
I follow very few comics, and if Puck ever stopped, we doubt we’d follow the others at all.
I realize the drawing is very time consuming. I’m certain the stories could race ahead at a much faster pace if the artwork were not so difficult.
At some point there will be an AI that will accurately anticipate the artist’s style, and assist in the drawing. But that day may be decades off.
But for now I can only praise and encourage the Webcomic that has become part of my life.
I am very thankful that you’ve stuck around in this wild ride, Salem. It means a lot. It really does.
The toughest part of learning to drive a manual is find someone willing to possibly sacrifice a clutch and the repair bill.
Well put.
I totally forgot to say Happy 10th way back there in the dark ages of April. It has been a very hard millions years for me each week. Your comic is damn near the only thing that keeps me going — seriously. Well, that and my family, food and the occasional beer. Maybe pizza, too. And peanut butter. Mainly the comic, though.
Well, thank God that you have peanut butter.
But honestly, thanks for saying. It’s always reassuring to hear that there are people who care. Because when I’m down and troubled, like James Taylor, I always think, “Does anyone care? Like, would anyone care at all if I just stopped doing this right now?” And this sort of feedback gives me the answer.
Always reassuring.
Wow. Puck gave Colin a choice! She does love him!
Truth.
Congratulations on your tenth anniversary, Mr. EG! You and Puck have been a delightful part of my week for many years. The only thing that makes plowing through a Monday is knowing that Tuesday Fairy Fun Day is not far behind…
I’m glad I can bring a tiny bit of happiness to the Tuesday grind. Thank you for saying.
Would it be too cliched if next the van breaks down? 😉
I’d say it’s inevitable.
Thank you for the stupidity, man. I appreciate it. I am looking for the reveal that the villain was Scrappy all along and she would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for nap time.
I posted this in the wrong comments area, ah well, stupidity reigns on everyone (see what I did there?) — it is October 6, 2021 for those that are counting the days.
Hey, a comment anywhere is a comment that’s appreciated. I wish I could move comments around on this site, but I can’t.
Thank you for 10 years of delightful cartoons and may you continue for many more! Have you thought about doing a hardcover compilation of your comics to date, for your fans, so that you can get some more cash out of the comic? You could do a Kickstarter, and you could use your voter incentive special themed cartoons for various stretch goals, or even as a separate book in of itself. I’d love to have such a collection in print! Thank you again for the laughs over the years : )
Thanks! Yeah, the book thing is an interesting idea but I’ve shied away from it because almost none of my readers have expressed interest. Even though I love physical media and would love to see Puck in print more, I tried to do a volume one in print way back and it sold so horribly that I haven’t really recovered since. I’ve realized that the comic really just isn’t popular enough to support a print edition. Heck, the readership has just kept plummeting over the years so now I feel any attempt at a Kickstarter would spell disaster. It might be different if I went to cons and sold there, but I can’t really do that.
I thank you for the interest, though. Nice to hear that one person out there would like a book of the comics.
