As for this comic...
I did sort of have this plan for making the machine a super-complicated steampunk affair with lots of gears and cogs and cool details. But then I realized that I'm terrible at drawing super-complicated steampunk stuff, so I swapped it out for a fanciful 50s-styled thing. Easier to draw. Cleaner visuals. Is it cheaping out? Perhaps. But a little cheapness isn't always a bad thing.
Obligatory Deus Ex Machina joke here? Except here it is Infernus Machina.
