NEW JULY VOTING INCENTIVE: PHOEBE GOES EXTREME!!!!!! Have you ever wanted to see Phoebe reinterpreted as an Image comic circa 1993? Of course you didn’t! And that’s why I’m here to make your non-dream a reality! A vote on TWC gets you a glimpse of Liefeld-level majesty! Check back every week this month as I 90’s-ize all of the primary Puck characters! CLICK HERE TO VOTE FOR PUCK!!! WE’RE TALKING BADLY DRAWN BOOBS HERE! As for this comic… The next few comics delve (lightly) into Phoebe’s history, which is a subject readers have expressed interest in. It is my firm belief that ‘winning’ people (whether that winning factor comes from looks, athleticism, money, charm or all of the above) often turn out to be obnoxious human beings unless they taste what it’s like to be a loser at some point in time in their lives. Whenever I meet an alpha-type adult who is also considerate and kind, I often find that they grew up poor, or awkward, or ugly, or shy, or all of the above. That’s not to say that you can’t be a winner from birth and turn out a decent human being, of course. It does happen. But it’s an uphill climb.

I didn’t know that Phoebe had braces when she was younger I wonder if she was ever jeered about it.

  • A puppy with horns?

Can… Can we see it all grown up sometime soon EG?

  • Nick Manly

Reminds me of when I was looking at pictures of myself when I was a kid. Still on the way geeky end of things, but those pictures were of a raw younger me that displayed a lack of everything I am now and I’m embarrassed just looking at them.

    • ElectricGecko

It’s hard to look back on those pictures without embarrassment, but I think it’s a good exercise. Everyone was in the same boat at that same age, really. That’s why grade seven is the nightmare it is.

  • It’s “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” Phoebe keeps her cool, while her picture gets geekier and geekier…

  • maarvarq

    Still pretty goddamned 🙂 adorable!

  • That grin…. So adorkable!

I’m fairly certain those swords 90’s Phoebe is carrying are far too practical and realistic for that era. I mean, where are the half-dozen extra spikes on the handguard bit? (because spikes are EXTREEEEEEME), And surely that costume isn’t stripperiffic enough. I mean, the cleavage going down to her navel and the “bared” midsection are just fleshcolored fabric, not actual lack of fabric.

Ya know, if Image and those aping their style in those days had managed to show the level of restraint you’ve shown with your 90’s versions that era bad rep might have been halved. 😀

Can’t wait to see 90’s Colin. I’m putting my bet on guns, guns and more guns with guns bolted to them. And a glowing eye, because glowing eyes are EXTREEEEEEME!

Oh, and little Phoebe is just adorable! 🙂 Of course, being called adorable is the last thing a kid that age wants to hear (not to mention if it comes from older relatives it usually is followed by unsolicited cheekpinching).

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, the swords and costumes of that era always seemed specifically designed to injure the user. I tried to emulate that, but obviously I wasn’t EXTREME enough. I can’t really escape my own sense of inner restraint. Though I will admit, I’m looking forward to drawing 90’s Colin. I think you already know what he’s going to look like.

      • SotiCoto

Pockets and pouches within pockets and pouches all the way down? Like the freakin Mandelbrot Set of fractal pocket-recurrence?

    • Nick Manly

Just as long as he doesn’t do the modern day version of 90s anti-hero. I mean really, Penance has painful spikes on the inside of his costume. I bet he writes bad emo poetry in his livejournal account and thinks everything is just unfair to him personally too.

  • You nailed the pointless armor and pouches too small to be useful but the sword should be glowing pink or green and her hips are way too narrow for the 90s.

    • ElectricGecko

True enough. Though ‘hips’ in 90’s comic girls are weird. Their hips (or the actual width from Iliac crest to opposing crest) are actually ridiculously narrow — around the width of the rib cage. The thighs, though, seem to take on the lion’s share of the work in creating an hourglass profile. I don’t know. WHAT AM I DOING? I’m discussing the freakish anatomy of badly drawn females from 90’s comics!

Let’s just say that I don’t totally understand it, in part because I believe it is impossible to understand.

      • Valkeiper2012

LOL, the main reason the depiction of females during the 90s is impossible to understand is most of the artists were male.

The females themselves during the 90s were impossible to understand.

hint: females are still very difficult to understand.

        • SteinarB

The artists might have been male, but one would have to assume (well, one would _hope_ anyways) that at least a _few_ of said artists had actually _seen_ a real live human being of the female persuasion at _some_ point before they put pen to paper. Actually, considering how some of the men looked one could quite possibly question if they had indeed seen _any_ human beings at all, male or female, or only had vague secondhand descriptions of the species to go by.

          • ElectricGecko

Hamlet says, “Oh, there be players … not to speak it profanely, that, neither having th’ accent of Christians nor the gait of Christian, pagan, nor man, have so strutted and bellowed that I have thought some of nature’s journeymen had made men and not made them well, they imitated humanity so abominably.” He’s talking about bad acting, but I find it echoes so closely your statements. How can people be THIS bad at presenting people? Have they never seen people? Are they people?

I can’t be too harsh, though. These artists, distorted drawings and all, were my idols once. I would have given anything to be able to draw like them in 1994.

  • I see that the glasses were more than just cosmetic at one point.

Or you intentionally mislead me about her not needing them now.

And I’m wondering what Daphne will look like in the 90s style. Something like X-Force’s Feral or something?

    • ElectricGecko

The glasses … they are a mystery. As for Daphne in 90’s style, I was thinking exactly like X-Force’s Feral.

      • Nick Manly

I would say Wildchild just as a humorous take on the crappy rendering of gender at times. I’ve seen quite a few pictures where it isn’t clear if they remembered if the characters were male or female if they’re furry like Feral, Wild Child, or Rahne Sinclair.

        • ElectricGecko

To be honest, I don’t really know the names of any of those listed characters, and I probably thought that most of them were the same character. I’ll do what I can.

          • I only brought up Feral because she’s easy to google search, and she already looks female, so you’d have a basis for Daphne’s potential look. Sorry for bringing in comics nerd stuff. 🙁

          • ElectricGecko

Hey, nothing to apologize for. I’m just going to crib from whatever Liefeld cover I can find that has that furry chick on it (whatever her name is), and go from there.

  • What are ‘tween’ years for the daughter of the devil? Regular tween years or is it a few decades?

    Also, love the motivation.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, it’s never really been touched upon in the comic, but Phoebe is not ancient like Puck (if Puck is even ancient in the first place, because the jury seems to be out on that one too). Phoebe is 29ish. There’s a good chance that she’s immortal, though, or at least partially immortal, or something like that. We learn more about her past in the next few comics!

Although I think I’m shooting myself in the foot the longer I explore Phoebe’s past, because this comic sets the record as the least popular comic I’ve ever done, according to Facebook likes.

      • Valkeiper2012

        I think you’re right.

I really like this page. Since I am always wrong, that doesn’t bode well.

        • ElectricGecko

Well, if someone likes it, I’m happy. I’ve discovered that Facebook likes seem to go high when Puck is in the comic, and when Puck is angry or being violent. Can’t make the comic be just about that, though. Or I could, but (in my humble opinion) it would suck.

          • Nick Manly

I can’t stand Facebook. I see it as a virus. I don’t worry much about Facebook likes. You got people that like your work just fine. Don’t worry about getting the likes, they’ll come along from the virus eventually.

          • ElectricGecko

Well, I don’t personally use Facebook. But I do find it interesting how different comics will work for different crowds. The Facebook types tend to be very different from the people who comment, and they seem to like different things. As long as someone is happy, I’m happy!

  • Mike Williams

hat picture s just….LOL I can’t stop laughing at that.

True to form, I know of a few ugly ducklings from high school like this who went through a tremendous change years later. LOL that pic! 😀

    • ElectricGecko

Glad someone found that pic funny. I know this one didn’t really have a killer punchline, but I thought the visual could carry it. Maybe I was mistaken; I dunno.

  • Rock

Sooo… what else did Phoebe discard along with her braces and pigtails? Any positive qualities she traded in for glam? And did her dear old dad encourage this actively?

    • ElectricGecko

No, I’d say Phoebe’s retained almost all of her positive qualities, though I would say that if I had to identify a personality flaw, it’s a preoccupation with aesthetics and appearance. She’d be the type to purchase something that looked beautiful, even if said beauty rendered the thing essentially useless.

I also think that any motivation for Phoebe’s behavior came from her, not from her dad. They’re pretty separate entities, and they’ve been shown to not have a lot in common. Phoebe grew up the way she did in spite of her dad, not because of him. That said, I’m sure he’s influenced her in small yet meaningful ways. Maybe that explains her affinity for pleather.

      • Valkeiper2012

There was someone else involved, wasn’t there?

Wasn’t there at one time a female progenitor… a mother?

      • G. Host

Completely understand that. My father is a bastard and my brothers and I grew up to be nothing like him. He was cross country mover and moved into some woman’s house while on road telling my step mother (his 2nd wife) he needed to stay away due to truck issues. It is discovered he has a common law wife where he is on road. He finally divorced and provided nothing to family which included 8 kids.

All of my brothers and I have been married only once. I think none of us wanted to be like him.

Satan is a bad example to Phoebe not someone who molded her.

  • Valkeiper2012

    Dang, E-Gecko…

Are you sure no fashion designers haven’t asked you for ideas?

You have some excellent depictions in this webcomic.

  • SalemCat

I’m a Time Traveller – to be exact, I travel several years behind everyone else.

    Eh. Works for me.

Now that that’s behind us, or at least behind me, I’ve seen the Maxfield Parrish of Puck, and Phoebe, both gorgeous.

When’s the Maxfield Parrish of Tracee going to be posted ? Soon ? Twice ? please please please

You can skip the homage to Daphne (oops, channeling SotiCoto again).
