    Of course, the kind of cancer you get when you read offensive things on the Internet.

  • SalemCat

    Why are Phoebe’s glasses RED in Panel 3 and BLACK elsewhere ?

    Picky, small, untalented creatures need to know.

    • ElectricGecko

      Because the pics in all the other panels are too small for me to properly draw an outline around the glasses. Unlike pretty much every other webcomic out there, I’m drawing this stuff with ink. On paper. And as such, I’m sadly held back by the practical issues of scale. I can’t zoom in and suddenly get all the space I need to do the fine work. If I tried to draw an outline of glasses, with a space in the middle to cover, the end result would be a cluttered and poorly drawn mess. So in long or medium shots, Phoebe’s glasses are often simplified. In close-ups I can better show the color and design of the glasses in detail.

      • SalemCat

        Hmh….

        Rational Explanations will get you NO WHERE.

      • PrGabb

        Holy crap, you draw these on paper? Way to go old school and rock it.

      • Shamdon

        All hail the might of the creator of this hand drawn comic.

        • ElectricGecko

          I only draw it by hand because I don’t have the tech or the practice/skills to use a tablet. I’m forced to use ancient methods mainly because I’m ancient.

      • Sometimes, old school is the best school. Like with CGI in a movie, you can tell the difference between digital art and paper art if you know what you’re looking for.

        Nothing wrong with digital artists, mind you. It’s much easier to correct mistakes or add lots of detail when you’re not restricted by paper size.

        • ElectricGecko

          True. Though I envy the incredible abilities of the digi-draw people. It makes some things so easy. It’s WAY easier, for instance, to draw gesture drawings and basic plans for a pose when you’re doing it on a small scale. However, it’s way easier to draw details on a huge scale. The way I work, on paper, I need to sacrifice one of those elements. (Mostly I just work in the nebulous middle zone and hope for the best, with pic sizes that are neither large nor small.) I envy the digital wizardry of others.

  • SalemCat

    HAH !

    Also the flower print on PHOEBE’s top varies from panel to panel.

    We need some CONTINUITY people !!!

  • SalemCat

    I’m just beginning to understand why the Ancient Egyptians MUMMIFIED so many of us.

    (payback)

  • SalemCat

    See, SEE !

    I DID notice her EYES first !!

  • Greg White

    She’s thinking of the western zodiac’s Cancer.

  • Best cancer joke ever!

    Although it’s also about the only cancer joke I’ve heard. Do cancer survivors have their own Book of Quips from which we will now sample? (If not: Kickstarter opportunity!)

    The movement of patterns on Phoebe’s garments, or the change in apparent color in her glasses, have never bothered me for a big reason and for a small reason. The small reason is that she is so inherently magical a critter that stuff just happens around her — chiefly, clothing stays on her that seems destined to fall off — and pattern changes are just part of the magic that, like Daphne’s ears, are never explained. Never.

    The big reason is that you don’t really notice the frame on the Mona Lisa.

    • ElectricGecko

      I’m not sure whether we’re really in for cancer jokes, per se, but there was much humor to my experience. Maybe the serious nature of the disease made me more attuned to the inherent ridiculousness of various things, but comedy was certainly there.

      • It also depends on the cancer survivor, too. My mom had problems before, and she was never one to find humor in a situation that wasn’t obviously humorous to begin with.

        She is stronger than I thought, though. She said, when I first talked to her after her cancer was cut out, that she wasn’t going to spend the next decade and a half worrying about whether or not the cancer would come back, something that I would have done if I were in her situation.

        • ElectricGecko

          True. Very true. It is my nature to find the absurd in most situations. It’s a coping mechanism to get through life. It sounds like your mother has the fortitude of character needed to face the bad stuff head on, without the need to insert a laugh. I’m not there, and likely never will be.

          • That doesn’t sound like her, but you may be right. Still, she’s still doing something that’s always irritated me about her and blaming her cancer for being a horrible mother.

            Yeah, I don’t get along with her, but she’s too messed up in the head to realize that. Which, in and of itself, sad.

    • Susan Schroeder

      I know lotsa cancer jokes. Wanna hear? I thought not. How about heart attack and stroke jokes. Trauma jokes? They’re a dime a dozen

      • SalemCat

        @Susan

        How about some NURSE jokes ?

        (uh oh – I forgot that Susan owns a BENELLI)

        Just Kidding !!

        • Susan Schroeder

          I know a LOT of nurse jokes. I AM NOT A NURSE, I am an ASCP-certified clinical laboratory technologist, who does some surgical assisting on the side for grins, giggles, and money. How’s this:
          CLINICAL SIGNS FOR YOUNG DOCS TO WATCH FOR:

          O sign: Patient’s mouth is gaping in the shape of an”O”
          Q sign: Patient’s mouth is gaping in the shape of an”O” with their tongue hanging out
          Dotted Q sign: Patient’s mouth is gaping in the shape of an”O” with their tongue hanging out and a fly lighting on their tongue

          AND WORST OF ALL! The Orange Juice sign: Two containers of orange juice on bedside table. This means that the patient has been dead for 24 hours and the nurses haven’t noticed it, yet (they give out these little OJ containers in lieu of breakfast, you see)

      • ElectricGecko

        You cynical medical types. You’re so dark.

  • Thisguy

    We should have seen this coming 10 kilometres off. Because of course this comic is going to throw a stupid joke in when one of the main characters says he has cancer. And that’s why we love it.

    • ElectricGecko

      I pride myself on consistently selling the same candy at my candy shop every week.

      • Thisguy

        I am not ashamed to say I love consistency.

      • SalemCat

        Hopefully you’re stocking ALMOND BARK now (yummmm).

      • Buggle

        With some variation of a flavor-of-the-week candy. (the voteys)

      • Still looking for a place, not online, that sells Jujubees.

          • I appreciate it. But I said “not online,” i. e. “brick-and-mortar” stores.

          • SalemCat

            @RN

            Oh My Oh My…..

            The Sweet Factory has many STORE LOCATIONS.

            (Cat does Face-Palm with Paw)

          • SalemCat

            @EG

            In Puck 398 I tried to help my pal RN source JuJuBes, but my new comment was censored. Please help.

          • I should say that I will go online and order something when it’s a matter of desperation…but right now it’s a whim of my mother’s and I’m still hunting around locally. (Haven’t tried the mall candy store or the movie theater yet, either.)

          • SalemCat

            @RN

            If online will do, AMAZON is selling 12 huge 5.5 ounce Theatre Boxes for $16.99 shipped for Prime Members, with a 20% Off Coupon Offer right now.

            Make mom happy !

          • SalemCat

            @RN

            It works out to $13.59 for 12 Boxes shipped, $1.13 a box, or $3.30 a pound. Really a good buy.

            I just ordered some for my human pets. They are OLD, so hopefully it’s a nostalgia thing for them.

            With any luck the JUJUBES will bring back fond memories, and will initiate a crying jag about those “GOOD OLD DAYS”.

            At least that is my hope. Making humans sob amuses me.

          • Susan Schroeder

            I just ordered a Pyrex baking dish and cover and a black acrylic drawing pen on Amazon for my bf’s birthday. I’m so romantic ๐Ÿ˜›

          • SalemCat

            @Susan

            I foresee a Dyson wrapped in tinsel-paper, with a frilly Bow on top, in your not-so-distant future.

            And a fine Heavy-Duty Extension Cord in your Stocking.

          • Susan Schroeder

            I’m never in doubt what my bf is going to give me for my birthday. Flowers, and some piece of jewelry I have admired during the year. He never seems to notice or make a note, but bing!, there it is. It’s to his interest to keep me happy and sensuous and it is in mine to keep him cooking ๐Ÿ˜›

          • SalemCat

            @Susan

            I asked Janet.

            You want to make a chef happy ?

            Forget Pyrex.

            Buy him ALLCLAD.

          • SalemCat

            Amazon just delivered Baldie’s JUJUBES.

            They’re really small, and somewhat hard (by design – they’re not stale). They do have a lot of flavor and take a lot time to chew.

            Probably good for someone on a diet, as they satisfy, and after a short time your jaw tires of them. Yeah, a box probably could last an entire Movie.

            Baldie thanked me for the tip, but said from now on he’s sticking to his TWO FAVES: White Chocolate and REAL Maple Sugar Candy.

  • Kaiser

    I never thought I’d laugh so hard at something Phoebe would say and/or do.

    Living a life of total ignorance has to be bliss when it comes to being unaware what cancer is…
    Then again, could be a shocker to find out what cancer is.
    …I’m now torn if I love the fact she’s this dense or not.
    Good job, EG. You’re making me question my love-hate relationship with certain characters.

    • ElectricGecko

      I unequivocally love Phoebe’s insanely ignorant nature, though only because it’s not willful ignorance. She has not chosen to remain uninformed about the world; rather, she’s been allowed by her unusual upbringing to remain blissfully unaware about a great many things. And it’s probably just in her nature to pay closer attention to the colors of a sign than the words contained on said sign, and that contributes to the problem. I find it endearing, but I can see why some would find it infuriating.

      I think it’s no fun if we have characters that don’t have massive, glaring flaws.

  • Greg White

    So when will Colin start getting treatments?

  • Susan Schroeder

    Re: drawing on paper: Jimmy Johnson still does it on “Arlo and Janis” See today’s blog http://arloandjanis.com/

    Re: Phloeble’s outfit. I can’s see why the peekaboo cutout stays teardrop-shaped if it is attached to her neck. Seems like it would pull out of shape unless stiffened by plastic or something. And I can’t understand why she is wearing gloves at all. Not even eensie-beansie Michael Jackson gloves, but going-to-the-opera-in-Haight-Ashbury-circa-1968 gloves

  • cucernunnos

    I remember dating a young lady like Phoebe: Hot as hell (pun intended) and dense as a lead brick. I can understand why she’s not in a long-term relationship: Being around people that clueless about the world is tough.

    Still, you gotta love Phoebe. Her child-like naivetรฉ is endearing…at times.

    • SalemCat

      Sounds like a match “Made in Heaven”.

    • ElectricGecko

      Yes, the perfect woman she is not. No perfect people to be found here. Though maybe… Nope. I was trying to think of a flawless minor character, but there aren’t any.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

        TRACEEEE is certainly flawless.

        But MINOR CHARACTER ?.

        NEVAH !!!!!!

        • Susan Schroeder

          @Salem: You don’t consider her lack of morals and probably a soul to be a weenise little defect? Oh, I forgot, you are male ๐Ÿ˜›

          • SalemCat

            @Susan

            For Tracee those qualities are RESUME ENHANCERS.

            Purrrrrr…..

          • Buggle

            She has two things to compensate for those as well, and she made sure they were big enough to fill the hole they left in her life…

          • Susan Schroeder

            I suspect that is where her soul went. She sold it to Satan for a -oob job. Those don’t come cheap ($5000 + per in Dallas. I can’t speak for Hamilton)

          • ElectricGecko

            I don’t know either, but the rule of thumb is always that everything costs more in Canada. Like, WAY more.

          • SalemCat

            @Susan, Buggle, et all

            Harumph !

            TRACEE is Organic, Phenolic, Non-GMO and was processed in a Peanut-Free Facility.

            She is completely NATURAL in every aspect of her beautiful being.

          • Susan Schroeder

            @thecat: Hahahahahahahahahaha! *snort* Hahahaha…*falls down on the floor gasping* Ha! *snort* haha*wheeze* hahahahah…

      • Wildcat8787

        What about hot dog guy? Don’t think we’ve seen any flaws in him… And I think he’s a minor character…

  • Greg White

    Phoebe’s thinking of Cancer the crab from the Zodiac.

  • I remember—and this was a long time ago—the horrorscope in the paper switched “Cancer” to “Moon Children.” No idea why “Moon Children.”

    • ElectricGecko

      Hey, it’s better. Avoids situations like the one Jim Gaffigan described as a childhood experience:
      “What am I?”
      “You’re cancer.”
      “Oh no! I killed Grandma!”

  • SalemCat

    @RN

    They want you to MOON CHILDREN ?

    Something’s rotten in Denmark.

  • Wow…your design with Phoebe’s outfit once again lookin’ crisp.

    You have a really cool fashion sense.

    • ElectricGecko

      Well, that’s ONE vote in support of this outfit, among the many voices saying they don’t like it. Thank you!

      • Susan Schroeder

        His vote only counts 1/2 because he’s a man ๐Ÿ˜›

        • SalemCat

          @Susan

          I do like Phoebe’s “bewb-covers” as well.

          And I get (1) Vote per Paw , so there’s (4) Votes !!

          • Susan Schroeder

            You have to have opposable thumbs for that to work, cat ๐Ÿ˜› “Not all primates have similarly dextrous hands; only the catarrhines (Old World monkeys, apes, and humans) and a few of the lemurs and lorises have an opposable thumb.” Not Felis catus domestica

          • SalemCat

            @Susan

            You’re not my boss – grrrrr…….

          • Susan Schroeder

            Pfft. I have been snarled at by important people ๐Ÿ˜›

  • lou

    “And when I said ‘on my hands’, I really meant ‘on my balls’.”

  • Greg White

    I wonder if Puck and company has ever seen Pinky and the Brain.
    I think Brain is a workaholic.

  • Nick Manly

    I see where this is going. Colin is going to start dressing up like Deadpool, get himself in trouble, and then find out he doesn’t have cancer at all, it was a false positive.

  • Susan Schroeder

    A false positive sonogram? Pull the other one

  • Wait – Colin says he’s got a problem “on my hands”?

    Is this going to confuse anyone when he has an operation lower down??
