Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Daphne Hannah Tyler (aka Taylor)Tags: prom talk
AUGUST VOTING INCENTIVE UP NOW! More bonus comic pic. Seeing as this bonus comic may never actually come together properly, this may be your only time to see this image, so please... VOTE TO BE SO VERY, VERY KIND! As for this comic... Like Daphne here, I hate talking. I mean, I can talk endlessly about meaningless stuff like the best actor to play He-Man, or what fried food is the best fried food, but when it comes to talking about actual, real, significant stuff, I ... don't. Even when directly prompted to do so.

I almost expect her to start singing

  • Peya Luna

sheesh, i can all but taste the awkwardness in the third panel – good job!

  • Kurmudgeon

“The small town eyes that gape at you/
in dull surprise, when payments due/
    exceed accounts received.”
    (Janis Ian, Seventeen)

Well, Daphne just hasn’t begun to the work she doesn’t know needs to be done (much less how to do it) to make this better. Aaaaand … I don’t see her asking TBG for lessons. Nor Phoebe, altho Phoebe would actually be her best bet. Maybe Phoebe can chivy Puck into action? Seriously, Daphne just doesn’t have the tools.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, I think Phoebe has passed the point of no return and is officially broken for the night. Puck is a maybe. But the best, brightest hope is the LBG. She ain’t done yet, I think.

  • SalemCat

    GOOD

    Daffy sux

    (channelling susan)

  • SalemCat

    Oh Oh….

In each panel Daffy appears to have “Angel Wings”.

    That can’t be right.

  • “Well, since my baby left me, I’ve found a new place to dwell. It’s down at the end of Lonely Street, called Heartbreak Hotel.”

  • You didn’t need to show me this disaster, but you did. DAMNIT, YOU CRACKLING LIZARD, YOU. YOU DID IT ANYWAY

  • Drakeye

Business cards for Tyler now include Ninja.

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, he successfully crept up on two people, one of whom was blind. And that is NOT an easy task, from my experience with blind people. Blind people have a very honed sense of awareness in terms of what’s around them. It’s hard to creep up on them because they don’t have that ‘cone of awareness’ that sighted people rely on. They have a ‘sphere of awareness’ that might not extend as far, but it’s sufficiently large and hard to sneak into.

      Ninja cred indeed.

  • Ichneumon

Hannah in panel 3: “My soul-crushing work here is done.”

I’d like to think that panel 4 is at least an hour after panel 3.

The progression of Daphne’s ears across all four panels is great.

  • Sigurther

    That certainly went well.

  • Whelp. Daphne got what she wanted.
She made someone burst into tears.
She just didn’t figure it was gonna be her, but that’s the problem with this sort of plan, isn’t it?

  • Frank Harr

    AAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well-done! Briliant in fact! This is why I pay the entrance fee. 🙂

    • ElectricGecko

All right. Now where’s my tenth of a penny?

      • Frank Harr

        😀

        HA!

That is actually part of the American currency system. It’s called a Mill. It was never a coin, but because the dollar was supposed to trad on-par with the Mexican Peso and that had eight reals, we needed to make 12.5 cents at least in our accounts. Also, we were moving from the Carolingian to a decimal system and bit more granularity was a good idea at lest for a bit. You can see it in property and sales taxes, though.

And now I’ve nerded out. Sorry. I vote for you on TWC. There you go. If you show up in town, I’ll . . . I don’t know what I’ll do. something.

        • ElectricGecko

I was more referring to the fact that I earn, on average, about a tenth of a penny for every pageview. So you’re already paying me. A very, very small amount. And when you team up with thousands of other people, I can actually buy a coffee. Which rocks.

  • It’s easier to be brave about things that don’t really matter to you, isn’t it, Daph?

  • demarion

Usually I’d make a joke here, but I really can’t. Ah- time for Phoebe to appear? (Not a joke, really would be a good time for Phoebe to appear . . . aaand I can see her talking about what a great dancer Papa Shnorf is and how happy she is she came to the prom, just to unintentionally add to Daphne’s misery . . . okay, maybe Puck or Colin . . . Colin actually could do good here . . . really, he could, being Puck’s common-law husband and Daph’s sort-of dad requires some ability . . . .

    • ElectricGecko

      All valid options…

      • Frank Harr

Apparently, there is some sort of CLM in Ontario for limited purposes. I did not know this.

        • ElectricGecko

And you sent me looking up what CLM could possibly stand for. Apparently one answer is a terrible skin infection, also known as ‘creeping eruption’. Just that gave me nightmares. Thanks for that.

          • Frank Harr

Common Law Marriage. I’m very sorry, I’ll try to rely less on context in the future.

          • ElectricGecko

Here’s the snag: I actually don’t respond to comments on the comic page. Rather, I use comment management system in WordPress which is … bad. So I see your response but I have no context. It won’t show me the comment tree or what you said earlier. So sometimes I can follow things, but here’s an example where if I saw the whole thread, I could figure out what CLM was. But as a disconnected statement unattached to anything else? A little less clear.

          • Frank Harr

“I actually don’t respond to comments on the comic page. Rather, I use . . .”

I had no idea. I’ll be more sensitive to that in future. I’m amazed you can piece it together as much as you do.

          • ElectricGecko

Yeah, it’s all due to the fact that one of the golden rules of internet ads is “Thou shalt not visit thy site much lest thou mess with the analytics.” They don’t like to see lots of owner-based traffic because it looks like you’re trying to goose the numbers. So I generally need to access my site from the back end.

  • mermaidan

    We’ve all been there.

  • ChrisH

Bummer in the summer. That said, for Daphne, things could be even worse, at least she didn’t blurt something inappropriate or even hostile to Tyler. It’s very hard to see longterm benefits sometimes, especially the benefits of saying and doing nothing..

    • ElectricGecko

Keeping silent in these scenarios is definitely sometimes the best. You can always say later that your tongue was tied, but you can’t say, “I didn’t mean the awful things I said.” Well, you CAN, but no one ever believes you.

  • Shamdon

What we need is Papa Shnorf to the rescue.

  • ChrisH

Unless he does the too suddenly and drops Phoebe on the floor.
    😉

  • The Walking Anomaly

Wait a minute. Tyler’s in panel one, too. How much of their earlier conversation did he hear?

  • justawriter

Without explanation, the DJ cues up “The Lonely Man” (the walking away theme from The Incredible Hulk).

I just want add that those ears in the last panel makes me go “dawwwwww”.

  • Zippy

The ears are awesome, and tell it all. Good work!

  • Frank Harr

If you’ve got ’em, use ’em.

  • Daphne: “Dammit Hannah! Why didn’t you stop talking when you saw him coming this way?”
Hannah: “…………………….. When I what now?”
    Daphne: “…. oh goddammit…”

    • ElectricGecko

He was actually in Daphne’s sight lines so, as the one with working eyes, she should take the blame.

      • I try not to take sight-lines too literally in comics. 😉

Who logically *should* take the blame, and who Daphne would rather shuffle the blame on may not line up perfectly. What a dull comic it would be if everyone was sensible, sane, and well-adjusted!

  • Poor Daphne. I really feel for her, since I didn’t have the cojones to fess up to my crush in high school either. To this day, I regret it, and have lived by a “I’d rather regret doing it than not doing it” mindset since.

    • ElectricGecko

True story: there was a girl in high school that I didn’t know well but had a crush on. We knew who each other were but the connection was pretty thin. I never got up the nerve to talk to her. Flash forward a few years. This same girl is talking to a mutual friend who mentions something about me, and the girl says, “That guy? Okay, I’m going to confess something: I had a HUGE crush on that guy a few years ago.”

      Like, WHAT THE HECK, MAN?!?

Speaking as a dude who DID confess his feelings to a number of girls in high school, though, I can say that it almost always goes bad. It’s awkward and weird and the girl is always trying to be nice and not make a fool out of you but it just makes the whole thing even more awkward. Honestly, various moments where I confessed my feelings to girls rank as some of my worst memories. Just thinking about them makes me physically wince. I’d say you had a 78% chance of your confession turning into a terrible memory. And with those odds, you’re probably better off with an eternal “what might have been”.

      • Frank Harr

You know, for a time of life where you’re meant to explore and develop yourself in a low-risk environment, it’s a high-stress time.

      • Yeah, well, funny thing; years later, after she was married I might add, she told me that had I actually had the courage to ask her out, she would have said yes.

Yeah, that was a kick in the beanbag to hear that.

      • Kat

Opposite experience. Was hounded rather persistently by a guy that I had zero attraction to in High School. He kept asking me out, but I could tell that we had nothing in common. I was a pretty odd girl in high school, and I’d have been able to spot someone with my interests. We tabletop gamers have a pretty specific Lexicon. Add on to that all the other high school stuff like dealing with college, religion, the beginnings of Cyclothymia (Think less intense Bipolar), and I was honestly a mess.

It’s not any better from our side. Cause it’s not you, it’s me always sounds like a platitude. But when you were raised Southern Baptist and you realize that you’re bi and according to your dad the youth minister, god hates you for it. It is me. You know?

        • ElectricGecko

I know a lot of girls who have lived your experience, and honestly that’s what makes the whole experience for me even more cringe-worthy when I look back on it. I have this sharp, terrible feeling that says, “Those poor girls.” I am happy to report that I was never super pushy and didn’t hound anyone. But the whole thing is just a mess in high school. What I understand now is that there has to be a certain something between the two people. You’re both going to feel it, and it’ll be somewhat obvious, and that’s when you act. The trouble is that teens are inexperienced and have no idea how to recognize that certain something. Teen boys, in particular, have never been socialized to really pay much attention to the feelings or behaviors of others, which means they’re terrible at reading fairly obvious social cues. Not all of them are bad at that, I guess. But most.

Not that it’s worth much, but I would like to apologize on behalf of teen boys for the hounding you incurred. It wasn’t just you. It was also them.

  • ChrisH

“The only things we don’t regret our are mistakes.” I kept to myself very much in high school, and I’d be lying if I said now that I don’t regret it . But who knows whether I’d have been happier now or even then if I’d been more outgoing? Life is that unpredictable. I hope Phoebe and Puck can help Daphne with some of their own experiences of their younger days.

  • ChrisH

@EG, I like the picture of Daphne counting money. (At least she won’t eat it, right?) 😉
