Puck 600

Chapter: Jinkies!Characters: Colin Daphne Phoebe Puck Tyler (aka Taylor)Tags: computer inspector gadget penny phone smart
MAY VOTING INCENTIVE UP NOW!!! April showers brought May flowers! And Puck! VOTE FOR SPRING BLOOMS!!! As for this comic... I often try to make the big milestone comics special in some way, with a big event or revelation or something to mark the occassion. But no, not here. Just another goofy comic. Oh well. When common sense tells you one thing but your phone tells you another, people always, ALWAYS do what the phone says. I mean, how can the phone be wrong? The phone is never wrong. Never.

    HE GOT IT STARTED.
HEY, she’s on the road there Fred.

    • ElectricGecko

He did get it started. Now whether he’ll get it re-started after stalling at the next stop is another question…

  • ChrisH

Does anyone have the phone number?

    • ElectricGecko

Who needs a phone number when you have a smart phone? The smart phone answers all your questions for you!

  • LaughingDemon

Somebody else remembered! And with the folding tablet, the computerbook is a reality. (once they stop being so breakable).

    • ElectricGecko

I was always fascinated by the idea of a computer book, but when I thought about it, my big question was always this: why do you need so many pages in a computer book? I mean, wouldn’t one page spread suffice?

Still, I want my computer book to have lots of pages.

  • DLKmusic

I had a snappy joke to post, but I was too busy oogling Velma, and forgot what it was…

  • JJR

She is using the Transitive property of most smartness.

    • ElectricGecko

Many people believe that the transitive property of smartness can be wired via their phones from the Interwebs to their brains. They are incorrect but that doesn’t stop their belief.

  • willis

something tells me they’re either gonna make it to Hawaii by nightfall, or the South Pole by tomorrow morning. also, *ala Bugs Bunny* I knew i should’ve taken that left turn in Albuquerque.

  • This is exactly why I’ve learned to check the directions that my phone gives me – BEFORE I start the car.
Because if glasses make you smart … cellphones don’t have glasses!

    • ElectricGecko

I am an old school navigator. I map out the route ahead of time and know the turns. That said, I’ve recently become dependent on my wife, who navigates with the phone, and I have to admit that it’s been a godsend in many situations. Unlike the directions I memorized before heading out, the phone’s directions can change as you go and adapt to your wrong turns.

  • Miles

I very recently experienced that… because GPS fails to mention dirt roads that blend in with the rest of the scenery.
It was also my first time relying solely on GPS (only very recently got a smartphone that works).
I mean, I figured it out, but also, DIRT F***ING ROADS, in the 21st century. Why?!

    • Zoar

because paving a road that gets used once or twice a year and will need to be repaved every year due to the weather is expensive….

      • ElectricGecko

This is the logical explanation. But I don’t care because I WANT ASPHALT! ALL THE ASPHLAT!

      • Miles

Except this wasn’t a road rarely used. I understand the dirt road to the summer cottage. Nope, this was a road that went to the animal shelter and the Elk’s lodge.
I navigate a dirt road most days to go to work nearly daily too, though it is currently dirt because it is being worked on extraordinarily slowly (last six months… we’re all sick of it at this point, but there’s no other way to get there.)

    • ElectricGecko

My experiences with phone navigation tell me that they are very, very good at navigating oft-travelled urban streets. And that they are terrible at navigating rural roads.

  • Sorry there, Phoebes, but you are NOWHERE near Penny’s league.

  • Dunno what Colin’s problem is, her logic is flawless! 😀

  • Pyper_13

Puck 600!! congrats! …and yet, I was somehow expecting something more grandiose for the occation…

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, I was expecting that too. And I could have manufactured a more momentous sort of comic, but I kinda realized that anything I did here would just be filler, so I thought, “You know what? Forget it.” And so we end up with this.

  • The last time I used the map thing from the Internet (printout, not handheld) to try to get somewhere, it put me on dirt roads and stranded me in the middle of nowhere. That’s why it was the last
    time.

Also, after the escapades of getting this far, I’d be reluctant to describe any of them as “smart.” Miranda, maybe, but not the others.

    • ElectricGecko

Phone navigation in the city: usually great. Phone navigation in the country: very bad idea.

And yeah, I’m honestly not sure whom to qualify as the smart one. They all have their elements of intelligence, but then they also all have their attendant realms of stupidity, and it sorta cancels out. Miranda is probably the best choice.

  • Commander Clash

Yup, with the computer book Penny could do anything.

    • ElectricGecko

Very useful. I love how computers could do anything in the 80’s. Like, if you had a computer, you could control satellites, take over the stock market, make a car fly, you name it. And back then most computers didn’t even have modems!

      • Frank Harr

They knew what they wanted, but could not have yet.

And once they had it, they non-stop complained about it because it wasn’t cool any more.

    • demarion

There’s also the Junior Woodchuck manual, used by Huey, Louie and Dewey, Donald Duck’s nephews. One comic had him ask “How can such a little book hold so much information?” Huey answers, “That’s all explained in appendix QX-J23!”

  • sigpig

    1. Dressed up as the Scooby Doo characters – check.
    2. Crammed into a replica Mystery Machine – check.
    3. Following the directions from a phone while INSIDE the replica Mystery Machine – check.
    4. Arguing about the directions – check.

There’s only ONE logical conclusion to the above circumstances. They’re gonna get lost, they’re gonna end up at a haunted mansion, and they’re gonna have an adventure solving the haunted mansion’s riddle. And COMPLETELY miss the con…

  • Frank Harr

    1. Man, she and I grew up watching the same shows.

    2. That’s not how it works, but that’s been covered.

    3. I’ve had the joy of having someone not want to do what I told them to and then having to explain that we missed the turnoff not because I didn’t tell them about it, but because they didn’t believe me and I know because it just happened. That was not a good day.

    4. At least Puck’s there to rescue them.

    5. The Order of the Stick pulled the same joke. I think it was for their 500th, though.

    • ElectricGecko

      1) The childhood of champions.

      2) Indeed.

      3) It’s a particular kind of infuriating.

      4) I don’t think she’ll be much help.

      5) I pulled a joke? Really? I was unaware.

      • Frank Harr

Well, you were subtle about it.

Also, I was wrong. OotS did it for their 600th as well. They were just more talky about being more self aware and all.

    • Frank Harr

      5.a. ah-HA! I’m wrong! It WAS the 600th! And I call myself a fan!

  • zyphyer

    600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ChrisH

66 pages from now will be even better. }:p

  • Andy

Penny and Gadget from Rescue Rangers. My first cartoon crushes.

  • demarion

Colin . . . got the van started.
Colin . . . got the van started.
    Just as I predicted!
(Yes. Really. I did! I think.)

  • Mark Christianson

With regard to the computer always being right. Just Google the phrase “GPS says Turn Left Now”

  • Frank Harr

Willow used computers and books. And look at what happened to her!

  • Thisguy

    A week late, but whatever.
Using a computer used to be a sign you were smart. But now computers are everywhere, and everyone uses them. That girl in class texting on her phone and taking a selfie? Probably not as smart as the girl actually writing and taking notes.
Being smart with a computer now is about how you use it. By looking up facts, verifying information etc… Most others just use it to check social media and play games, or look up… less than correct ‘facts’.
Or sometimes it’s even used to show up the ‘smart’ one, by having the smart one not know the answer, then the ‘dumb’ one look it up on google, showing that computers are no longer a defining point of the smart person.
Nowadays, if you want to appear smart, you read books. Smart people still read books

    • ElectricGecko

This is all very, very wise.

At least we still have books. For a little while, at least. Until all the smart people go extinct.
