As for this comic...

I'm sure someone in the comments will chime in with a report on how much money a few of those Good Delivery gold bars is worth.  It's a lot - even though it's tumbled quite precipitously in value over the past few months, it's still a lot.

Not a bad payday, all in all.

Well, one thing is for certain, Daphne has some extra money for a personal private vacation for herself. Either that or financial aid for the college of her choice.

As for this new Job of hers it makes me wonder what Daphne will do to help Satan beef up his security?

  • LaughingDemon

First, Know Thyself. That may take a few years or a few hundred.

  • Robert Nowall

He did? Well, they did have a prior relationship involving his Papa Schnorf merchandise collection…

  • I feel like Daphne convinced Puck to stay still so she could get shot down. Knowing her target helped, obv.

  • Thisguy

I mean, last time Daphne had money, Puck lost it all by turning Daphne in for underage gambling.
    Its safer with Daphne.

  • Peya Luna

i agree completely with previous comments – the money is WAY safer with daph than with puck! she could start paying a bit of rent/her share of household expenses though 😉
as for what daph will do with her dosh….vacation and/or college? please, i can rather see her invest in her future, shady business. i mean, she clearly has criminal talent and satan/the mayor on her side already – tony better watch out!

  • willis pate

at least Daphne has some cash on standby, for any kinda emergency.

  • Ryan

I wouldn’t usually bother, but the the Gecko is counting on us. Those looked like full size 400 Troy ounce bars to me which translates to 12.441 kg each. Gold is currently around 193,000 CAD / kg or 134,000 USD which converts to about 2.4M CAD or 1.67M USD per bar.

Daphne doesn’t strike me as college bound, but she’ll pay cash if she decides to go.

Isn’t this donation of gold bars just a smart investment in the future by Satan?

He’s already had Daphne working for him at least twice now and she is by nature a terrible horrible garbage person

Now I think about Satan wins here. Sigmund is even more loyal now, Tracee is meaner and Daphne is even more of a terrible horrible garbage person plus she’s practically in his pocket now

He’s even managed to get his daughter away from Puck

Not bad for someone who’s biggest contribution was sitting back and gloating

  • McManx

A few gold bars is a great investment for the future — for a mortal. But given the longevity of a woodland fairy and a changing, the actuarial table on that investment is a bit wonky.

  • bergerjacques

So who is more susceptible to the temptations of the dappled shade?
Daphne finds herself at a crossroads now that she’s managed to eject Satan from the Puck/Phoebe household. She understood that the cabal represented a smarter evil holding the reins of mayoral power and decided it was far better to make evil stupid again.

Did she do it for Phoebe? Yes. I think she was motivated by a need to get the idiots out of the house. But in the process of doing so, Daphne, being true to her Daphne-ness, has managed to feather her own nest rather nicely.

Will this upwardly mobile social status endear her to Tyler’s mom?
Will Hannah’s good girl/wild girl personality continue to have a benevolent influence on Daph?
And most importantly, when it comes to living arrangements, who ends up living in the basement now?

  • demarion

Yes well, you do still have the van, you do know where Tracee keeps her gold, you have placed Tracee back where she wants to be, you do have Colin and Tyler’s strong backs and weak resistances to your will, yours and Puck’s!

  • ChrisH

Puck and Daphne are very compatible despite their frequent arguments.

  • Frank H.

Puuuuck! Come onnnnnn! Now’s not the time for acurate introspection.

On the other hand, it’s not to know that Hot Dog Guy’s having a positive effect.

  • Swimsquad

Random thought; if a school theatre were to put on Midsummer’s Night Dream, could Puck sue for defamation of character.

    • Frank H.

You can sue anyone for anything. That doesn’t make it not a stupid thing to do. In this case, one of the most consistantly popular authors in the English language ever? I bet on having to pay your lawyer, the other guy’s lawyer, the jury, the judge and throw a party for the listeners because of how dumb a case it was.

    • ElectricGecko

Nah. Past the statute of limitations.

  • Puck clears her throat. “Ahem… currently I am relatively young and healthy, able to work, but someday sooner than you might like, I shall be old, decerped, incontinent, and riddled with dementia. Option one is the full responsibility for my care and support falls on you. Option two is I have a had a very health and diversified retirement fund and trained nurses can get paid to deal with my shit (literal and figurative) instead of you. Thoughts?”
Daphne: “One, you are already 600+ years old. I expect my grandchildren to be dust in graves before you get your first grey hair. Two, yes, you are healthy and able to work today, but you are nonetheless unemployed, not earning or saving a penny for next week’s groceries, much less your “retirement” (from what, exactly?).”
Puck (looks away awkwardly): “….and Colin?”
Daphne blushes lightly and also looks away. “Half a bar is going into a reputable mutual fund inside an RRSP under his name and SIN. Going to see if he can scrape together $50 a month to help it grow faster whenever I can work up the will to tell him about it.”
    Puck: “Such a good girl!”
Daphne: “AM NOT! YOU TAKE THAT BACK, WITCH!”

    • ElectricGecko

      Valid. All valid.

      • Robert Nowall

I can’t make a guess about how long any children Daphne might have would live. Don’t even know if there’s anyone she’d want to breed with. (Or if she could with Taylor aka Tyler.)

        • Swimsquad

If I had to guess I’d say that Daphnes kids will have an average lifespan (the real question will how much of their mother you’ll see in them). Now, the question you should be asking is how long is Phoebe and her descendants going to live for.
PS I’m not really sure how effective that “save details” button is.

        • Daphne (whatever she is) appears to have aged at near-exactly a normal human pace. Barring the introduction of any new information, it’s reasonable to assume that would continue.

If she were a dog, she’s have reached her full physical adulthood in one year. That didn’t happen, She aged in pace with Tyler, and aside from her appearance, she’s nothing like a dog in any meaningful way that has been shown to us.
…Very possibly she goes through more shampoo that most of us, and may have two different brands for her head-hair and body fur…. but that’s never really been relevant to the plot.

          • ElectricGecko

The new craze for ‘body wash’ (which is just shampoo, but marketed as soap for the whole body) would solve her issues, I’m sure.

    • Frank H.

      I’m not a witch, I’m your mother!

  • Robert Nowall

Decided to mention…you know that thing where us archive trawlers tap on the comic to go to the next comic? It stops at #868. Something to put on your “to do” “fix this” list, but not of any great urgency.

  • Thank you for coming home
Sorry that the chairs are all worn
I left them here I could have sworn
    These are my salad days
    Slowly being eaten away
    Just another play for today
Oh, but I’m proud of you, but I’m proud of you
Nothing left to make me feel small
Luck has left me standing so tall
    Gold (gold)

  • Price check! Math is fun when you’re counting money! ^_^

Currently one ounce of 24 karot gold (99.9% purity, the highest grade) is worth $6,651. A 1 standard kilogram bar (probably what those were, by the size) would therefor go for about $213,700. (And by the gram, just move the decimal 3 places left. Metric is wonderful!)

That being said, maximum purity gold bars are pretty rare. It’s much more common to make large quantities of gold into “coin bars”, of the same purity used in gold coins, (22 karots, or about 75% purity) because 99.9% pure gold is softer than most metals, and tends to get damaged, dented or scratched easily.

A 1kg , 22 karot, gold bar is currently worth about $176,300. If Daphne walked away with 3 of them, that would be worth $528,900. That’s our lower, but reasonable, estimate.

I believe Daphne would have looked up the current gold prices, possibly on her phone while waiting around in that chair.
I’m less confident the Devil bothered to think about how much the bars are worth in today’s dollars. He probably thinks of them in terms of what they were worth when he acquired them… which given that he might measure his age in millennia, could easily pre-date any globalized trade markets for precious metals.

20 years ago, these 3 bars would have bought a house. Today, she’d need 6 more bars. Still she’s off to a great head start for someone who hasn’t yet graduated high school?

The bent ear in Panels 3+4 – so expressive!

Live would be easier if we all had that capability.
