Puck 208

Chapter: Lactation FrustrationCharacters: Miranda Phoebe PuckTags: baby denial
Various thoughts on this comic: -See that baby carrier in panel one? For some reason, those carriers always weigh about 75 pounds, no matter how light your kid is. They’re unwieldy and awkward to hold and just plain annoying, yet they’re sort of essential. -I’m trying hard to depict the post-pregnancy body here. It’s not easy, but my wife says that I’m on the right track. “It’s … not a flattering time,” she noted. And it isn’t. But it’s real. -As per usual, I have no idea what Phoebe is wearing. It looks like she was trying out for another remake of the Bionic Woman, then lost half of her outfit on the way to the casting call. “Why does Phoebe always look like she’s going to burst out of her freaking outfits all the time?” my wife asked upon seeing this one. She clearly hasn’t figured this mystery out yet. NOVEMBER VOTING INCENTIVE: PHOEBE CELEBRATES ALL THAT NOVEMBER HAS TO OFFER!!! Speaking of Phoebe, here’s some more Phoebe! In a voting incentive! • But even willful denial has its limits, oh wise alt text, when you have fingers under the bathroom door.

  • Gaztasterofpork

Shh Puck it will all be okay you do have live in babysitters! A slightly airheaded demoness, an apathetic teen dog girl, and Colin………..I feel so, so sorry for that baby now.

  • Phoebe’s outfit looks like a tracksuit…until I see the bare midriff.

I’m serious there; all that’s missing is the stripe down the leg, and it looks a lot like the track suits we wore to meets at my high school, bare midriff not withstanding. Colors different too, but who didn’t expect that to be true?

    • Pat

Well, where that zipper is, it looks more like a nipple attractor. Is the artist still hooked on breastfeeding supposedly?

But what I’m curious about is the tablet that our dear Phoebe is using. What is that, the dPad?

    • ElectricGecko

Well, it started out as a tracksuit, but then I thought it looked too mundane and not ‘Phoebe’ enough, so I cut the middle part out.

      • Valkeiper2012

If you were to open a “Phoebe Fashion Line”, I think you sell a bunch. Love your idea of what a girl can wear.

      • So I guess that Phoebe was out running before Puck came home? Since you say it “started out as a tracksuit”. After all, a figure that nice takes effort.

Man, I miss the ability to run…:(

        • ElectricGecko

I don’t think Phoebe is the running type. I think she’s more the ‘wears high-end athletic gear for the sake of fashion’ type. I think she’d be averse to the very idea of breaking a sweat.

          • Like I said last week, there’s more to Phoebe than meets the eye, so she may maintain that she’s “adverse to sweating”, but there is no way she’d keep a body like that into her late 20s/early 30s without SOME exercise.

Then again, she’s the daughter of Satan, so who knows what dark powers helping keeping her looks…

  • The kid’s already learned to speak. You could take “ah-wanh” as “I want”…

  • I like how Phoebe’s iPad logo has horns.

  • And that sums up parenthood to a t. Sitting down only to immediately stand up.

  • David

The zipper straight down the boob does seem a tad gratuitous.

  • Greg White

I’m looking forward to seeing Miranda grow up.

  • Ming the Merciless

    Miranda grow up?
Since Puck is 600 years old, she’s had at least ten husbands, and as birth control is a new thing and healthy women used to have twelve to fifteen offsprings and what with grand and grand-grand and grand-grand-grand kids, there must be a couple hundred “family members” lurking around, most ginger and freckle faced…(Check Summer Winter’s 8 “rusty” brothers in “moon over June”)

    • Valkeiper2012

I’m pretty sure you’re wrong on that. I am rather certain THIS was Puck’s first child.

She has ALREADY shown too many things are new to her that any mother would already know by the end of the first month after giving birth.

She has also shown being pregnant was a new experience to her.

      • ElectricGecko

You’re right. This is Puck’s first child. Which makes no sense, but I’ve never really sweated the ‘making sense’ bit.

    • Valkeiper2012

Ten husbands? I doubt it. Sorry, but Puck is a rather… let’s say strong individual. She would not have been subservient to anybody and until the 1970’s or 80’s, THAT was what a wife was supposed to be ( in the US). Most other places in the world, Puck would be badly beaten or even killed due to her attitude.

      • ElectricGecko

You might be right there. But again, I write her like she’s thirty or so. No centuries of back story. I do think that Puck’s personality would be wholly incompatible with the 1600s, though. Like Kate from Taming of the Shrew. And that didn’t end well.

    • You obviously haven’t been following the comic for that long, boss. Here’s a tip for you; forget that the first 600 years happened. Puck is essentially a woman in her early 30s for the purpose of storytelling and life experience. The only reason that Puck was made to be a 621 year old fairy (at the time of the character’s creation) was to give her something to “stand out” from other comics back in 1998.

TL:DR-Creator said “This is Puck’s first kid, and first 600 years didn’t mean anything for my purposes.”

      • ElectricGecko

You beat me to it! But I see why everyone gets confused. It’s just too late for me to go back and change the tagline to “Puck, non-ancient pointy-eared mortal with strange name.” It just didn’t fly with my test audiences.

    • ElectricGecko

First 600 years don’t count. For all intents and purposes, this is first kid. Though perhaps she had her memory wiped and there are ten thousand Puck kids out there. I dunno.

  • Ming the Merciless

Still, women subservience is a relatively recent thing due from muslim influence.(They still thing women are furniture)
Celtic and American native women had the run of things, were extremely athletics and a real Puck would have dropped that brat like a fart after a Boston beans dinner!

    • ElectricGecko

Eeeeeennnnnnnnhhhhhhh… I’m going to have to quarrel with you on that one. Subservience of women is a fairly consistent feature of Judeo-Christian and Muslim culture, and has been for thousands of years. If your culture sprung up somewhere around the Mediterranean or the Middle East, the chances of your culture taking a dim view on women’s equality is pretty high. It’s not just an Islamic thing. You’re right, though, in that many other cultures with a non-Judeo-Christian-Islamic cultural base are far more progressive in their thinking on women’s rights.

      • Ming the Merciless

Meh…about Puck’s progeniture, who care about a story absolute consistency as long as it is well told, witty and the drawing is sharp.
There is so few online comics worth reading and yours rate way up there with “Kranburn”, “Day by Day”, “C’est la vie” and “Genocide man”…Keep up the good work!

        • ElectricGecko

Well, I thank you for the vote of confidence. All I aim for is Ovid’s goal: fit to be read. If I can manage that, I’m happy.

  • Mike Williams

Phoebe’s drawn really hot! Loving that outfit with the Buccaneers’ creamsicle orange. I applaud you, sir.

As for Puck…welcome to parenthood! 😀

    • ElectricGecko

I don’t even know what sport the Buccaneers play, but if it makes you happy, sir, then I am happy.

      • American Football. Dude must be a fan of said team if he instantly sees the color scheme as that.

        • Mike Williams

No, not a fan of Tampa Bay. Growing up in New York, I was a Giants & Jets fan. Still for followers of the NFL, those colors are so recognizable of the franchise.

Also, I followed the Edmonton Eskimos when I was a kid when they were winning all of those Grey Cups. So me being a sports fan spans pretty wide.

          • ElectricGecko

I really wish I knew anything about sports. My total lack of sports-type knowledge has hamstrung me in my social interactions with other men, because sports seems to be the primary avenue for socializing and communication. I can talk music, movies or video games, but only nerd men talk about that stuff, and not all men are nerd men.

  • Mike Williams

Don’t feel bad, Geck. Your aptitude for pop culture would fit in nicely with me and guys I know. You wouldn’t be the odd man out because we change the climate of the convo on a dime sometimes; movies, video games, etc. 😀

However, when it comes to music, anything after 1990 will have me at a loss for words. IMO, music had officially sucked since then. Maybe why Pandora is my main source for listening to songs while I work at my drafting table.

    • ElectricGecko

My music knowledge has a later stop date. Anything past 2003 is a big blur for me.

      • Mike Williams

2003? I feel ya. I was strictly talk radio by then…or Vivaldi on the classical station.

However my son is a constant reminder as to why today’s tunes are terrible to me. He listens to crap sometimes. I’m happy that I influenced him to some of the classics early on.

  • Ming the Merciless

It does say plainly up there…Puck, AMNESIAC…Think of all the epic drama you can stir up by 600 years of former husbands, lovers and offsprings, allies and enemies, popping up at the most inopportune moments!

    • Kaiser

      Yes. Just yes. Would read.

    • Ming the Merciless

Aaaand Phoebe’s Daddy the Devil, he would have personally pulled the strings on ALL on them, of course…

    • ElectricGecko

If this were a daily comic, I’d probably feel the pull to exploit that type of plot device. As it is, simple storylines like ‘Puck goes shopping’ take me half a year to complete, so I don’t think I’ll be bringing in crazy people from the past anytime soon.

  • Greg White

I suggested showing Phoebe’s dad losing the war in Heaven and being cast out.

  • SotiCoto

The two worst sounds in the Universe: Newborn Babies… and Icecream Vans.

  • Frank Harr

Is that the teapot that tried to eat Col’s hand?

I think Phoebe just does that to clothes. Much like the spot for her tail.

I know this isn’t a great place for this observations (that was when Phoebe was wearing the black and red number with paisleys) and I know that as a straight man, I’m not what one might consider as “natural” expert; but I like the wardrobe you give the ladies. They’re attractive. They fit the characters’ personalities (even if Phoebe’s outfits aren’t always realistic). They’re just right and it’s better than in the old days.

And while I’m on this theme, I kind of miss the pictures of Puck that the Old Ones had, but I admit that that would be inappropriate for this stage of the story.
