Oh Phoebe: how adorably infuriating you are. This (along with the button-fly jeans) is yet another example of the girl’s penchant for all things early 90’s in nature. For those who don’t know (because the reference IS a little dated), the last panel is a play on C+C Music Factory, the band who performed ‘Gonna Make You Sweat’ (better known as ‘Everybody Dance Now’). You know the song, I guarantee. I wish I could hum it to you. The band was fundamentally twitty, just like Phoebe. Like most allusive jokes, if you don’t get the reference, you probably won’t find it very funny. Oh well.

Lol! Got it in one! I still love that song. But it makes Puck’s reaction even funnier if you get the reference.

Noooo! The cursed song is stuck in my head now XD Ah, the 90’s…

My daughter makes me listen to that song again and again in the car. (Yeah, I have C+C Music Factory’s first album on MP3 in my car. I’m willing to admit it.) There’s a small part of me that is a lot like Phoebe, and my daughter inherited all of it.

Darn you! I scrolled my mouse pointer over the cartoon strip and out popped that reference to that god awful Technotronic group….

How did I ever survive 1991 music?

I love early 90’s dance music. I realize that is a sin, but hey, I thoroughly wear it with pride. Now SHAKE THAT BODY!

  • Gonna make you sweat.
Fun fact, when I started doing comics, I was working with a dude called Phil, and we were known as Papi and Dez, which eventually got corrupted into P & D Manga Factory

I listened to 2 Unlimited in the 90s.

Yet somehow this particular group evaded my notice.

The 1990s may well have been the worst decade in musical history since, I dunno, whenever it was that Attila the Hun ruled Central Europe.

  • Personally, I think Satan adopted Phoebe. There’s just no way, NO WAY, she’s blood kin to Satan. LOL.

Randomly re-reading a few of the old strips, I love the fact that the C+C Music Factory reference was already dated back in 1999, but here in 2025 it’s downright archaic, and most people of college age have in fact NOT ever heard any of their hits.

Weirder still, I just now learned that not only did a version of the band re-form in 2010, but they are STILL touring to this day.

And we got a Martha Wash reference from Phoebe in a relatively recent comic, meaning her love of early 90s dance music is STILL going strong. And I’ll note that I think everyone has heard “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” at least once.

      • My love is exceedingly vivid

This brings to mind how somebody made a mash-up of “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” with Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” some time ago, and surprisingly, it really works. It’s nigh impossible to find now…
A decent amount of the ’90s music was pretty good, although it kinda trailed off towards the turn of the century. Each decade has its share of bad music, it’s just seems the 90s has more than it’s fair share. I blame hip-hop/rap for ruining a large percentage of popular music, along with music business executive idiots trying to micro-manage and manufacture “guaranteed money making hits, all the time”.
There is some good music made in the ’00s – ’10s, it’s just hard to find.

I have a huge soft spot in my heart for 90s dance and club music. It is fun. Dumb but fun. And some of it was very carefully crafted. The oughts had their own terrible flavor and though it seemed bleak at the time, the passage of time has made me warmer to some of the music.
