Chapter: The Happiest Place in OntarioCharacters: Colin Miranda PuckTags: bows pigtails
So every other webcomic on the planet had signed up for Patreon, and this shoe had to drop eventually. Please know that this changes absolutely nothing about how the comic runs. It's still free on this site, and bonus stuff is still going to pop up on TWC as voting incentives. But there’s going to be MORE on Patreon – and ALL for a measly dollar a month! For instance, there’s TWO alternate versions of this very comic on Patreon right now, featuring unused jokes that I thought up before deciding on this one at the very last minute. I might be putting previews of coming comics, teases, and other things up on Patreon in the future, so stay tuned. As well, all the extras (voting incentives, wallpapers, pinups, etc.) from previous months and years will only be accessible through Patreon now (and there's a LOT of extras, given that I've been doing this for five years). Just one dollar a month gets you full access! It'll take a while for me to post all the old stuff, as well as the new material as it comes out, but I have to say that for Puck fans who can spare a dollar, it might - MIGHT - be worth it. (Which is my self-deprecating way of saying that I hope it’s worth it.) CLICK HERE TO BECOME A PATRON OF PUCK! A PUCKTRON? That sounds rad, like gestalt transformer or something! Also… TWC VOTING INCENTIVE: GET SHNORFY!!! CLICK HERE TO MAKE LEARNING FUN! As for this comic… I struggle to draw babies. Babies are just plain hard to draw. Their proportions are all wonky, AND their proportions constantly change as they age. BTW, I don’t know how old Miranda is now. Best guesses place her somewhere between six months and a year. And yes, I know that she has A LOT of hair for a kid that age, but bald kids look weird, so there. This, by the way, will likely be Miranda’s true hair color from now on. The eagle-eyed among you may notice that it’s a gradient fill that incorporates the central shade of Colin’s hair and the outer shade of Puck’s hair. The end result is the strawberry blonde look that I wanted to achieve for Miranda. Also, said eagle-eyed readers might notice the faint freckles on the bridge of her nose. This (along with the hair) is a bit of a creative embellishment. Kids don’t usually develop freckles this young; it takes a good few years of sun damage before they can grow a crop of freckles, so a freckle-faced baby is highly unusual. But when have I ever shied away from the highly unusual?

Miranda’s getting her teeth that will make her cranky

  • DLKMusic

All three jokes were pretty good, actually. you couldn’t have gone wrong with any of them!

  • Prgabb

Why didn’t Puck every put bows on Daphne’s ears?

  • pat

The kid is definitely not going out with bows. Or bows out with dignity.

    Hey, you’re on Patreon! Awesome!
Too bad I have no way to support you on it because my bank is a PITA (and useless) that says that “Paypal isn’t a thing”. So yeah.

Miranda, in my opinion, actually quite fits with that hair color (if you decide to stay with it).
She’s starting to get teeth? Oh boy. That’s gonna make her cranky for a while.

I did notice the freckles and thought I either imagined things or that, yes, she did in fact have those. Then again, it’s you, so I assumed both were equally likely.

Considering Miranda’s half-Elven nature, I don’t think that one would question the fact that she has some slight nose freckles and a goodly amount of baby hair. After all, she already has Elf-leaf ears.

When Puck says, “[I’ll] work my magic,” it makes me wonder whether Miranda may actually have some magical abilities, the likes of which we haven’t even seen manifested in her mother.

Magical genetics are tricky. I’m not sure Mendel studied them.

    • Salem Cat

Puck had Magic Once, but The Three Witches of Shakespeare’s MacBeth took it away as part of The Curse.

Along with her ability to recall anything before her present life.

      • Nick Manly

And here I thought it was Oberon that took it all away for siding with David Xanatos against him.

        • Marduk

That was Puck’s evil twin brother, Puck. Fairies aren’t the best at naming children.

        • Marduk

By the way. If memory serves me correctly, Gecko had developed a dislike for all things Disney by the 90s. He’s not going to get a Gargoyles reference. Something I learned by making my own Gargoyles reference in the past.

          • SalemCat

            Gargoyles.

            Ooooo….

            I remember THAT exchange.

          • ElectricGecko

You observe correctly. And to verify, I’ll ask ‘What Gargoyles reference?’

Stupid Gargoyles Puck, further complicating the list of ‘Puck’ characters and crowding me out on Google. I have to contend with Shakespeare’s Puck, Marvel’s Puck, Puck from Glee, Puck from ‘The Real World’, Wolfgang Puck, Disney’s Puck (not Marvel-Disney, but Disney-Disney) and the hockey variety. It’s a wonder I get any coverage at all!

          • Marduk

You’ve made it onto the first page of Google results at least. I used to have to search for “Puck comic” and scroll to the bottom of the page if I lost the bookmark.

And David Xanatos was the main antagonist of multiple seasons in Gargoyles. He made a bet with Puck that turned Puck into his personal butler for life. There was some bad blood between Puck and Oberon after that, at least until Xanatos became the father of Titania’s grandson.

Hey, I’m really trying to crusade against all the other Pucks in the universe, which is a challenge. I remember reading an interview article with an indie gamer who’d made a game with a fairly generic name like “Wave” or something. (I forget the actual name.) In the interview, he was asked “What thing would you do differently if you could go back and do it all again?” and his answer was “Not name the game ‘Wave.'” Having a generic name that is also something in the real world means that you’re pretty much unsearchable. But I wasn’t thinking of Google’s search engine mechanics in 1998 when I created Puck. Because Google hadn’t even formed yet.

“Hey, I’m really trying to crusade against all the other Pucks in the universe, which is a challenge.”

            Yeah !

Especially them little round black ones you Canadians seem to be plagued with.

You even have a Uniformed Security Force that attempts to smash them with sticks and then cage them.

But they are too wily !

          • Bruce M. Palmer

Gargoyles? I missed that one because Oberon is also the name of the fairy king in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”! – somebody Puck knew well, back in the day before fairies needed college degrees, had magic flowing out the ying/yang, didn’t get their genders confused just because some human cartoonist thought it worked better, and when a female fairy fell in love with a human he would have looked and thought like an ass. (Wait… That’s Colin. Never mind that last one.)

    • ElectricGecko

Well, seeing as Puck has shown no real magic abilities in the comic, I’m thinking the chances are low. But we can always hold out hope…

    • SalemCat

Although, as a Fairy, Puck is technically Immortal, part of The Curse is she now leads “Recurrent Lives”.

Puck Number 1 https://puckcomics.com/?comic=puck-1 states she is 621, but has only lived 8 years.

It seems she “Recurs” each life at Puberty, and lives each life as a Mortal, recalling only the fact she is a Fairy, her actual Age, and her Name.

She’s likely had a dozen husbands, and dozens of children, but knows nothing about them. It’s a Cruel Curse, indeed.

What I find more interesting is to speculate what Puck DID to anger the Witches. With her attitude, so many choices !

  • Well, in Panels Two and Three, Miranda is almost as coherent as Puck usually is…

  • jimpost

But when have I ever shied away from the highly unusual?

    Heh. True. So very true!

  • Susan Schroeder

I see that Miranda has inherited Puck’s temper along with her ears and freckles.
I remember my mother once put my hair in a pony and tied it with a ribbon. I untied it and made a choker out of it.My mother was incoherent for an unfortunately short time

  • Buggle

I love how Miranda is no longer wearing just onesies – kind of indicates she’s growing up. Will she ever have a speaking role?

  • Marduk

How can anyone cry with a copy of Banjo Kazooie loaded into a functioning N64 in the room? It should be physically impossible.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, maybe if you DON’T also have a copy of Banjo Tooie lying around somewhere…

      Fortunately I do.

      • Mahnarch

She’ll end up dating the Crack Head next door’s son*.

*who rebels against his parents by getting good grades and wants to be a doctor.

  • Karl M

    “Get Schnorfy”

Do I sense a Rick and Morty reference?

  • Otter

Well Gecko. Finally caught up. This comic has more comments per…. comic, then ANY OTHER IN THE ENTIRE WEB-UNIVERSE. so kudos on that. Also. Colin needs a makeover.

    • ElectricGecko

The site currently has over 14,000 posted comments. Takes a while to read them all, certainly.

And a makeover will occur for Colin at … some point in time. Not SOON soon. But eventually.

  • Buggle

I check this every day, even though I know it only updates on tuesdays…

  • Greg White

I think the expression Guys Don’t Make Passes At Girls Who Wear Glasses
should have a Puck guest or vote comic devoted to it.

  • Fyrebrand

Just wait till she gets older. Then we’ll be watching the world burn.

  • The floor tantrum just looks so comical lol.
I didn’t used to think that way but I’m way past that phase of child-rearing. Its only cute in hindsight 😀

    • ElectricGecko

To be honest, I’m way past that phase of child-rearing too. The comics require me to dig deep into my memory banks and relive the crazier moments of my now distant past.

  • ComedyHobo

    That baby is angry.

  • Samuel Bronson

But but but but … Starfox!

  • Frank Harr

She’s always had hair. I’m not surprised that it’s this long.
