Puck 407

Chapter: One of the BoysCharacters: Colin DaphneTags: ping pong
SEPTEMBER WEEKLY VOTING INCENTIVE!!! MAGAZINE COVERS!!! The Puck cast appears on their own individualized magazine covers! How? I don't know how! Why? That's a mystery too! And remember, this voting incentive was chosen by special fans who donate $5 or more a month! If you want to join their controlling ranks, HEAD ON OVER TO PATREON and join the select club! VOTE BECAUSE PRINT IS DEAD!!! As for this comic… In the interest of disclosure, I need to admit that I DO NOT own a shirt matching Daphne's description. Though the possibility is tempting. This comic also may or may not be taken as evidence that Daphne actually designs and produces all of the many shirts she's worn.

  • Just don’t call him Tom Green. πŸ™‚

    • ElectricGecko

Ouch. That’s the real cutting insult.

      • Shadowkey392

I don’t get it, but I’ll take your word for it.

        • Tom Green is a Canadian. Back when I was a teenager in the late 1990s, he had a show on MTV. He had a bout of cancer in the same region Colin does, and he had his surgery done on his show.

Tom Green is considered “Canada’s Shame” by Canadians like EG. I hope that explains things.

          • ElectricGecko

I still kinda like the guy, though.

          • Eh… he was a shock-maker, but I don’t know if we ever gave him the title officially.

You ever see that time Shatner was on the Steve Harvey show, for the celebrity Harvey’s Hundreds game? Snatched up the cash right out of Steve’s hand to give to the contestant, while poor Steve is standing there with his mouth open, shocked that he did something so rude on HIS show.

Shatner may have been born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, but he’s been living in California since the 60s(?). He’s one of THEM now.

          • ElectricGecko

ONE OF THEM! ONE OF THEM!

    O M G

Since I spend so much time with my mind in the gutter (that’s where the mice are), I’m looking at this week’s episode in a very inappropriate way.

If I knew nothing of the actual family dynamic; If I did not read the dialogue balloons; I’d think a svelte fox was flirting with some clueless guy.

Our little Daphne is growing up so fast !

(tears welling up in my eyes)

    • ElectricGecko

Fortunately, you DO read dialogue balloons.

    • Marduk

I don’t really see that in their facial expressions.
Panel 1: Daphne is clearly bored and Colin is slightly surprised. No one expects to be approached while in the fridge.
Panel 2: Daphne has perked up a little but Colin is clearly annoyed.
Panel 3: It’s fairly obvious she’s teasing him, maybe like a sister would tease their brother.
Panel 4: Daphne is amused while Colin is slightly less annoyed than the previous two panels.

If this were the first Puck comic I’d seen, and there was no dialogue boxes, I’d probably be wondering why the werewolf girl has a human brother.

  • SalemCat

On second thought, I can’t recall anytime that some minx began smiling and discussing my junk, that major fun did not soon ensue.

Of course, that was all before I was “FIXED”.

    DAMN YOU BALDIE !!!

  • haildean

behold the only few positives of getting bo||ock cancer

  • KaineNecrosia

if that was a shirt i’d totally buy it and flaunt it.

  • Buggle

funny nicknames! And did Miranda inherit Puck’s sunburn genes?

    • ElectricGecko

I’d guess yes. Colin’s Scottish blood wouldn’t really counter that. In my kids’ case, even though they’ve got a mild case of the freckles, they also got some Italian genes from me, and that seems to make them WAY less prone to burning than their mother.

  • JR Beeler

Ah, so Daphne steals t-shirts, then prints the slogans on them, perhaps via those iron-on transfers you put in your printer!

  • khamya9

those are all awesome taunts that I will have to find an excuse to use.

  • Alex Reid

Ha! Started reading this like a month and a half ago and I’m finally caught up.

    • ElectricGecko

That makes me feel better if it took a month and a half to read. Some people are like, “I started reading this morning, and now I’m done!” And the thought how many man hours went into generating that one morning of entertainment get depressing. But a month and a half? That’s better!

  • random whatever

I am a fan. I own two tes+icles. This story arc has made them climb up into my torso and up until today has not been funny. But today, that’s funny. I think I like Nutclops the best,

  • Kaiser

The voting incentive made me laugh. A lot. Especially the “raise your own modern vampire” part.

As for the comic, I’d probably wear one of those shirts if I ever needed to get rid off one of my T’s. If nothing else because it’d be funny.

Also, I’m curious: are you going to make the comic be that Colin just shows up at the hospital and the next one being him sleeping (or just waking up), or are you planning on (for whatever reason) involve the actual surgery?
(If the latter happens, I will be VERY surprised.)

    • ElectricGecko

I won’t depict the actual surgery, no. Because … no. Besides, that’s not something I personally experienced, due to the whole ‘general anesthetic’ thing, and I don’t think I want to look up videos of that. We will instead follow Colin’s mental and spiritual journey when he is under. I have something kind of funny planned.

  • SalemCat

A mere three months ago Daphne was literally VOMITING at the thought of Colin’s junk.

Yet know, she seems to have spent hours NAMING IT !

Robin will not approve – no, she won’t.

  • Susan Schroeder

Well, I sure don’t approve, but then I don’t approve of Daffy breathing, so no surprise, there πŸ˜›

  • Marduk

I might have accepted Nutclops. Although I’d be concerned about the risk of someone calling themself “Nobody” just for an excuse to kick me.

And Ginger Mom Monthly sounds like it has a very targeted audience… that is not made up of ginger moms.

  • This is a really affectionate scene … considering the characters. It would be both out of character and completely useless for Daphne to come out and say, “I care for you man, good luck” or something … also boring. But teasing him – that’s both in character and helpful, it seems to me. Colin could use a laugh.

I don’t see why Daphne shouldn’t have a complete academic knowledge of human anatomy, unless her school is backwards. Applying it to Colin might have been a shock at first but maybe she’s growing a little bit more adult dealing with this difficult situation. Not as big a change as for Colin of course.

    • ElectricGecko

I’m glad you think this. You describe what I was going for.

      • I remember saying something similar during the “Puck gives birth” storyline; where Daphne says “If you can put up with my crap over the years, you can do anything” followed by a mentioning of the pool for when the baby would pop. She cares about her “parents”, but as a teenager, she’s got to maintain her self image.

Honestly, Daphne’s personality works better as a teenager than it ever did in the initial black and white run all those years ago. πŸ™‚

  • pat

Hey Gecko. I tried posting this last night, now to try to retrieve that nugget from memory.

Could it be possible that Daphne has already made that ping pong T-Shirt, and is just using this barrage as payback for not only making her vomit when she found out but also to regain her own position in the pecking order again. But all through her own way of saying, “You’re not my punching bag, but here’s a few below the belt,” in respects of her own love for Colin.

  • SalemCat

What does the note on the Fridge read ?

  • demarion

Yeah, that’s a good one . . . a good one . . . boy, with this topic, anything said can be taken in one way or another! Also, can anybody explain Daphne’s t-shirt? I don’t get the question.

  • demarion

Oh, what the hey, I’ll say it . . . in panel 3 Colin’s looking a little testy!

  • SalemCat

    Daphne is lookin’ good.

Please, EG, when does she turn 18 ?

Or whatever the Age Of Consent is in JACKAL YEARS (or whatever she is).

I apologize, but I DID promise Comedy Hobo (the only other member of the TRACEEEE FAN CLUB) I would ask.

    (dear lord forgive me)

  • DefinitelyANormalHumanPerson

I’m afraid you’ve made one of the classic blunders in comic-making. You mentioned a custom-made T-shirt idea without having them all printed out three weeks in advance. Now I’ve scoured the store and come up disappointed and mildly inconvenienced!

  • SalemCat

    Well, THAT’S THAT !

EG, it is TIME, once again to expand the Recent Comments buffer.

In the past I and Buggle were known to populate it solely with our individual wisdom, and earlier today Col Klink filled it to the max.

Now I am not scolding the good Kernal, on the contrary – no one wants to miss any witty discourse between yourself and your Fans.

    • SalemCat

      BIGGER IS BETTA

    • ElectricGecko

The Recent Comments section is at an appropriate capacity. We cannot plan for all contingencies. Rather, we plan around a 100-year flood policy wherein we set the comments section to account for the standard rate of comment precipitation, and also accommodate a standard-issue flood deluge. But when the comment floodgates open up and rain commentage down upon us, we simply cannot prepare for such occurrences.

Besides, the ‘recent comments’ box is an eyesore and I don’t want it to be bigger than it already is.

      • SalemCat

Is PUCK optimised for Smart Phones ?

Because on my 1920 X 1080 Wide-Format Monitor there is plenty of dead black space.

It measures 19″ across (not diagonally), and PUCK only consumes 7″ right in the center.

Leaving 6″ free on both sides.

Too bad RECENT COMMENTS can’t be a Drop-Down Box.

Then it would take up very little room – and could potentially be hundreds deep.

        • ElectricGecko

That’s the inherent limitations of WordPress. There are complex ways around it, but your screen is also an ultra-wide design, which is why there’s all that dead space. I lack the genius ability to create a site that formats properly for all screen sizes and variants.

And ‘recent comments’ is a widget that must go in an on-screen column. Again, I’m sure there’s ways around it, but you really have no idea how user-unfriendly WordPress is. I lack the ability to redesign the site in any meaningful way.

          • SalemCat

            @EG

            Point taken.

As for me, if I possessed opposable thumbs, and thus owned the ability to open my own cans of Tuna, there would be little need for me to suck up to Baldie.

No need to arch against his legs, purr convincingly, listen to his tales of bore, and generally degrade myself.

            Life is imperfect.

            But then there’s TRACEEE ! Purrrrrrr…..

          • Susan Schroeder

That’s why I like dogs. You never doubt their sincerity. And if they whine and look pleadingly when I am snacking, I offer them a carrot. Works every time – they go and lay down.

          • SalemCat

            @Susan

            DOGS – Yukk

            So needy…. just pitiful.

          • Susan Schroeder

Jealousy is an ugly emoting πŸ˜›

          • Buggle

All dogs are Good Dogs. πŸ˜€

          • SalemCat

            @Susan
            @Buggle

            Dirty rotten SPECIESTS !

(there. i made up a word)

  • I feel the need to rewrite the Colonel Bogie March with Colin-appropriate lyrics. But I haven’t time.

  • Shadowkey392

    …I like that shirt idea.

  • You always make great tshirt designs. So crisp and pro-looking in such a small area.

    • ElectricGecko

It’s kind of hard, because the designs need to work at such a small scale. I often have cool ideas for a design, but it just doesn’t work in the comic because anything that contains more than a few words ends up being unreadable.

  • Susan Schroeder

UNIHARD? How does Daffy know about Peyronie’s Disease? Personal experience? Never mind, I don’t wanna know.

  • Susan Schroeder

Hey, it was an honest mistake πŸ˜›
