Initial drafts of this strip originally had to do with gastroenteritis and uncontrollable vomiting, but then I realized that I'd just pulled a vomit joke out of the hat two comics ago, so I had to get more creative. Or should I say, had to get more "creative". Because poop jokes are certainly an unexplored comedic wilderness, right?
EDIT: Panel four originally said 'norwalk' for 'dysentery', but readers generally were unfamiliar with the phrase. So I changed it. That explains the norwalk-related debates raging in the comments section.

“Got Norwalk ” ??
Common name for the norovirus. Named after Norwalk, OH where an outbreak occurred in ’68. Why do I have the terrible feeling that this is going to be another one of those terms that I assumed was just an everyday part of the American lexicon, only to find that it isn’t?

It’s an old American term for norovirus too, though. It’s not just Canadians. Norwalk’s in Ohio, for crying out loud!

I’ve never heard of Norwalk either and I’m in Quebec. Well, granted, we speak French here and it’s uncommon enough I never heard anyone talking about it in English, let alone hearing about noroviruses more than once in a while in French medical things.
Well then, I guess it’ll just stand as another weird thing in my comic that people will have to look up and get confused by. It’s a common problem.
Correct me if I’m wrong, isn’t the definition of French making fun of others in their time of despair?

Top Google result for “Norwalk” is Norwalk, CT. Wikipedia lists 14 different things Norwalk can refer to (six of them in Connecticut), of which the virus is the second to last. Personally, I don’t think I’ve even heard of norovirus before, and I teach biology. (Though, granted, microbiology isn’t really my bag.)
Well, I guess it’s far less common than I thought. Maybe I should just change it to ‘dysentery’.

Well, dysentery is perhaps a little more vintage, but at least everyone knows the term. And it’s got the added humor of these characters contracting a disease most commonly associated with 1800’s-era pioneering.

Your concern was valid. Never heard of “Norwalk”. Sounds like a character in a BBC children’s show. Maybe a claymation badger or something.
Sometimes I have a funny word or phrase but then I do a cursory Google search to determine if a large enough percentage of the English-speaking world is familiar with it. The answer is ‘no’ most of the time.
In all my many years of reading, I have never seen the word ‘yay’ followed by a question mark. Mr. EG, you, sir, are a truly creative writer.

Actually I thought of an answer after I posted. Toilet seats for more than one person are found in latrines. So maybe it was a camping experience.
There is always the love toilet as featured on SNL. (look it up for a pic) For those moments where you don’t want to be alone so I suppose it would work for mother daughter bonding in very awkward ways?

For some reason I initially thought that Puck’s censored word was ‘shagging’, which really made me wonder what the shared experience was. N.B. ‘Norwalk’ is not slang that has made it Down Under (as it were) as far as I know.
Uh, no. And to be honest, I wasn’t fearing that misreading because no one in North America has used the word ‘shag’ since the Austin Powers craze mercifully ran out of steam in the early 2000’s. But I suppose that unfortunate word is still alive and well on the other side of the pond.

Should be “puking our brains out and shitting our guts out at the same time”. I got norwalk three or four times back in the nineties, first time I didn’t care if anyone saw me on the crapper with my tackle swinging around it was that bad. Voiding into the bowl behind me and the bathtub in front, door wide open, didn’t care. I’m pretty sure I was passing bile from both ends after my tract was empty that one time. It was so bad I couldn’t even keep water down. I hven’t had it in… slightly over twenty years thank god. This was all at home ‘though, not on a cruise ship. I remember it was hitting the cruise ships fairly bad for a while.
I am glad that at least one person knows what the f#$% norwalk is, even if the circumstances behind your knowledge are so unfortunate.

Yes, I agree, that was a quite disgusting posting. It was late when I wrote it, and my judgment was lacking. I can’t edit or delete it now, so it must remain for eternity. A noro-virus infection is THAT BAD though, I’ve had mild to moderate food poisonings over the years and NONE were as bad as Norwalk. I was lucky in that I made it to the toilet every time. If there are ever reports of a noro-virus in your area, make sure to wear a mask and gloves when you go out. Take a bunch of tissue paper and/or hand sanitizer in your pocket and use them to clean your hands after opening doors. Do NOT eat out, eat at home. IT IS THAT BAD, you really don’t want to get it.

Ugh, I remember having Norwalk like 12ish years ago and it was not pretty. Mine was mostly vomiting though.
Well, I changed it to dysentery because (A) that IS mostly out the back end, and (B) lots of people don’t seem to remember Norwalk. Apparently lots of people report problems on BOTH ends with Norwalk.

I know all about Norwalk episodes; my MIL had it once.
You could have used “Chlorea”, food poisoning, or my favourite, C.Difficile (my FIL had it while he was in an induced coma being treated for meningitis).
C. Difficile is primarily connected to hospital stays and prolonged antibiotics usage, where you kill every strain in your gut except that one. And it can kill you pretty dead, too. So I wouldn’t go that route. Dysentery can kill you through dehydration, though. So I guess these bowel bugs are no laughing matter.
