Puck 468

Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Colin Phoebe PuckTags: dress prom
NEW NOVEMBER VOTING INCENTIVE! It's Thanksgiving for 90% of my readers, so that means weird Phoebe cosplay! If you've ever wanted to see a devil girl dress up as a sexy pilgrim, then, well, I think it's safe to say that this is your only chance. Better vote while you can! VOTE FOR PUCK! SAY YES TO THE BLUNDERBUSS! As for this comic... So we finally see the dresses that Phoebe's been cooking up for herself and Puck. Puck's is reasonably classy. Phoebe's is unreasonably over-the-top. No surprises there. This comic, by the way, was at least partially inspired by the fact that I mistakenly put in a speech bubble when I should have put in a thought bubble in a comic a few weeks ago. It just got me musing on the importance of speech versus thought bubbles, in comics and in real life.

If a hot redhead in a skin-tight dress, who also happens to be your wife and the mother of your child, isn’t good enough for you, then I don’t know what to say, Colin.

    • SalemCat

Mebe Colin’s favorite color is Blue ?

(and if he says anything – Black & Blue)

    • ElectricGecko

I need to note that my wife read your comment and heartily approved. So well done, sir.

      • DMC_Run

        [E.G.]:
I should point-out, Good Sir, that Puck’s final words here are NOT rhetorical — she’s basically fishing for further compliments. My suggestion to Colin is:
        – Do NOT mess with her makeup.
        – Do NOT ‘muss’ her hair.
        – This ‘fishing’ on her part suggests that she’s looking for more than just words.

… with all this in mind, I’m thinking he should lightly hug her, while gently nibbling on her shoulder, & muttering,
        “MMmm-m-m-m … freckles … my FAVORITE!”
If she tries to push him away, yield slowly, while using a “Gomez Addams”-type voice to say,
“You KNOW what that DOES to me!!!”
In any event, don’t let her go without first whispering to her:
“I am SO – VERY – LUCKY, to have you in my life.”
… & if you have any regard for your life AT-ALL, You! Will! Mean! It!

Have to say, I think I like Puck’s dress better. Pheobe might be sexier, but Puck’s dress has an undeniable air of elegance!

(yeah, I know, my age is showing)

  • No, Puck *is* prettier. Phoebe is just showing more cleavage.

  • Thisguy

Eh, I like Puck’s best, it’s classy and elegant and reveals just the right amount.

Phoebe’s reminds me of a half peeled banana.

  • How often I – and perhaps we all – wish we could change our speech bubbles to thought bubbles IRL!

As for the dresses: some like fire, some like ice. There’s really no wrong answer as long as you keep it in your thought balloon.

  • Lokitsu

While both ladies are beautiful, Puck’s outfit would turn heads at the MET gala. Phoebe, on the other hand, looks like she’s dressed for the AVN awards show.
    Sorry Phoebe.

  • pat

I wonder what the thought balloons will say when he gets an eye full of Daphne.

  • Kaiser

Both of their dresses suits them.
I am curious which comic you’re referring to when you should have put in a thought bubble rather than a speech bubble.
As for me, I tend to think a lot and then never say any of it, causing a lot of people to wonder if something is wrong with me…

    • ElectricGecko

The strip was #463. I’ve fixed it, but when it first ran, Puck’s thought bubble in panel four was a speech bubble. It actually took a while for anyone to notice it and bring it to my attention, but yeah.

  • Drakkenmensch

Puck is stunning and gorgeous! Red hair and freckles are my kryptonite.

  • GumbyDammit

Colin might be dumb, but he’s not stupid!

  • SalemCat

All eyes on Phoebe all night !

    Simply Spectacular.

Tho I wonder if a small glove that would cover her Tail Barb might be just the detail that would bring her outfit from a TEN to an ELEVEN ?

  • Tio Willie

“Hot Mary Mother with Gravy!”, I am so adding that to my lexicon (with permission of course). It is right up there with, “Sweet fancy Moses” and “Christ on cracker”.

  • Nate

C-Colin my boi are you JOKING!? Your wife is hot! I’ll take her if you don’t want her dude.

    • ElectricGecko

Colin appreciates Puck. He just can’t stop appreciating other women too. It’s a problem.

      • Nate

That’s fair, and I will admit i’ve fallen victim to this too but, damn it puck looks awesome and deserves all the appreciation right now.

      • I once explained to my step sister that the reason men still look at other women while with someone else because they’re comparing them to the standard their current woman is setting. More than often not, the outcome is “she looks good, but not as good as the one I’m currently with.”

It’s when the man stops looking is when she should be worried.

  • As for Phoebe…didn’t Cher wear something like that to the Academy Awards?

  • demarion

Like I’ve said before, Colin has a lot more on the ball than people credit him for. Frankly, Colin should be Premier, or even Prime Minister; 10 years of living with Puck, Phoebe and Daphne is preparation for anything! A neighbouring country threatens war? Piece of cake. Alien invasion? Ho-hum. “Dudes, these are the three women I live with, plus the cutest daughter any man has. Now, you can surrender now when I’m in a good mood, or later, when I’m not. Your choice.”

    • ElectricGecko

I hold to the idea that Colin is not really smart, but merely a survivor. He is a rat trapped in an elaborate cage with various shock panels and such. He knows how to avoid the shocks, and acts entirely out of self-preservation. He’s just so adept at it that it almost appears to be intelligence.

      • demarion

Yeah, that does make sense, I just figure Colin ought to get a little respect for sticking around. . . . I also wonder how his students will feel about him, once they see his wife, her roommate . . . will U of T English courses be the hot ticket for Hamiltonian high-school students?

        • ElectricGecko

U of T? We don’t talk about that place ‘round these parts. That’s Big Smoke talk! To be honest, you will find very few U of T grads in Hamilton. Mostly because they have better places to be.

  • pat

    Another instance for Mr. Smacky?

    • ElectricGecko

If he’d said something, perhaps. But he didn’t. He’s growing. By tiny degrees.

      • pat

We’re talking 1/x type of degree aren’t we? Or is the equivalent or corresponding temperatures like the following example using the high temperature of Miami from yesterday: 30 degrees C/86 degrees F.. 30/86 = 0.384. So maybe near boiling water.

  • SalemCat

It has been a while since Phoebe changed her Hair Style, but this week’s episode confirms she made a wise decision !

    Old Hair

  • ChrisH

Don’t worry Puck! Sexy red beats sexy blue every time.
    ;))

  • Matthew

Phoebe ALWAYS shows more skin. That will never change.

  • Don MacDonald

Based on past experiences, I have to think that Colin will be lucky to get out of there in one piece. At the very least whiplash from trying not to be causght ogling Phoebe.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, whiplash is just sort of an occupational guy hazard. It’s best to always have a neck brace lying around the house, just in case.

  • James McCleary

I was about to make a comment on the history of thought bubbles, or speech balloons in general (cf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_balloon), but with the passing of Stan Lee, I’m just going to spend some time reading tributes to the legend and leave the comics trivia for another week. Excelsior!

    • ElectricGecko

I will miss Stan. Many thoughts on his passing. Few I can easily articulate here. All I can say is that he lived long enough to see himself deified. Not many can ever claim that.

      • The man lived a long and impactful life. At 95, he lived through a lot, and made a huge impact on not just his chosen profession, but the world in general. The world may be lesser for his loss, but the legacy he left behind and the characters he created will live on forever.

  • Commander Clash

Personally my vote for belle of the ball still goes to Puck. She looks ten times better in her dress.

  • bergerjacques

I imagine most folks will just wonder what kind of social life these adults have that they decided to get THAT dressed up for an adolescent dance at the middle school.

    • ElectricGecko

I suppose it’s a little sad, from a certain point of view. But Puck is a stay-at-home mom who doesn’t get out very often and is reveling in the opportunity, and Phoebe missed out on her own prom and is weirdly trying to recreate the experience as an adult. So they have their reasons. Kinda.

  • I’ve got to say that I prefer Puck’s look. There’s a level of elegance and maturity in her style that Phoebe’s outfit lacks.

  • Lordfireice

wait puck is in canada????? i ether forgot or didn’t notice…….i dont know whats worse

    • ElectricGecko

Well, it’s been mentioned many times, but a big deal is never made of the Canadian setting, so I think it would be easy to miss.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

Many are relieved Puck is set ON EARTH, let alone Canada (which is so far North, it is in danger of flying off entirely).

And has ANY Humans in it.

        Doubt me ?

        Everybody’s an Alien.

  • Badtaiming

These two are soon to be hated by every teenage girl at the prom. Those are some dam sexy dresses.

  • Badtaiming

Phoebe’s talents are wasted at her regular work she should be a fashion designer. Pucks retro 70′ early 80’s dress is fantastic. Phoebe’s dress looks like she should be in a beauty pageant.

  • JustSumGuy

Honestly, Colin should’ve worn a dark purple suit, a pair of lightly tinted glasses, and bought a cane because with the trio of lovely ladies he’s escorting to the prom, he’s practically a pimp.

  • Jesse

Note to Colin: Don’t stare, Puck will catch you. If you do stare, tell her you were wondering why Phoebe felt the need to flaunt herself so shamelessly, then shake your head, like you’re sad, or something. Option B is go, “Meh,” then turn and openly and lasciviously ogle your wife. Option C is to play dead and hope she buys it.

  • Colin’s been leveling up his Husbando skills!

  • I prefer Puck’s dress.
The colour really suits her, and it’s more classy.
(Not to mention, it probably doesn’t require the use of double-sided tape somewhere.)

  • Jabun

Y’know, it JUST NOW hit me that Colin is literally the only default human in their household.

  • ChrisH

Well, I’m sure they’ll be plenty of humans at the prom. I can’t wait!
I know how I would like the plot to go- the phrase “killing with kindness” comes to my mind. 🙂

  • DLKmusic

On a note that has nothing to do with Puck, We lost two legends this week, Stan Lee died on Monday, and Roy Clark died on thursday.

Stan, Thank you for your work, and thank you for all the Inspiration you brought to the comic world.

Roy, you were truly one of the greats, and all the guitar chops I stole from you, I promise will never forget where they came from! thank you for being a personal inspiration.

    • ElectricGecko

Roy Clark, I must admit, I had to Google. Not a big country music guy. But after I Googled him, I was like, “Oh, that guy! Yeah! I … kinda know that face.” Didn’t know he’d just died either. Huh.

On the Stan Lee side, I am just quite literally wiping the tears out of my eyes after listening to Kevin Smith’s tribute to Stan Lee on ‘Fatman Beyond’. (You’ll find it on Youtube.) So many Stan stories. And Kev breaks down at a few points and it really got to me. The stories are f#$%ing hilarious, though. Worth a listen, if only to hear about the time Stan Lee threw shade at Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols … at a kids’ poetry reading.

      • DLKmusic

Stan Lee to me will always be the creator of Fantastic Four. Even as a kid, I wasn entranced with the concept of a super that didn’t really want to be one because of those comics. I see his influence and psychological insights in almost every comic I read, including this one!

Roy Clark was more than just another guy on Hee Haw. If you’re a Beverly Hillbillies fan, he did all the guitar work in the background music, and you can here his influence in a lot of other music, not just country. For example, Lights by Journey, or just about anything by the stray cats (First time I heard “Rock this town”, I thought it was Roy Clark playing the guitar). Crowded House, Red hot Chili Peppers… the list goes on and on.

I will raise my glass and shed a quiet tear to both of these legends, and will sing Excelsior in a bluegrass style.

  • ChrisH

RIP, Mr. Lee. You made many readers happy, and will continue to do so.
“The sad thing isn’t that we die so old, it’s that we die so young.” – Oscar Wilde

    • ElectricGecko

Well, he had a good innings. We should all be so lucky to live a good, long life. And I mean, I know he had some sadness in his life and the last year was a bit rocky, but all in all, I think things came up Stan Lee most of the time.

  • Trying to figure out why Puck’s dress seems so much better.

Maybe it’s because its line steers the gaze up from the hips and boobage to her perfectly delightful face, using the lace and the edging as pointers that say “when you’re done, my face is up here, gentlemen!” whereas the lines of Phoebe’s dress direct the gaze to the boobage and the curves inward and stops with no directive high, creating a socially awkward moment but more importantly deemphasizing Phoebe’s sweet face. Just because the face is never in the dress doesn’t mean it’s not part of the outfit.

Or I may be thinking too hard.

    • DLKmusic

I thought it was because Phoebe’s dress says “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard”, whereas Puck’s dress says “It doesn’t matter what you think of me, what’s important is what I think of YOU”

    • ElectricGecko

Well, you have nicely hit on an intentional design element that I put in to differentiate the dresses: the direction lines and flow are inverted, with Puck’s forming an A while Phoebe’s forms a V. I felt it fit, though. So much of Phoebe’s design is suggestive of that V, from her horns to the chevron tip of her tail.

  • Monster Hunter

As we all know, elves don’t really exist, so obvious what is going on here… Puck is a vampire and Phoebe a succubus, and they are looking for fresh young victims. (Red dress is big giveaway, hides the blood stains)

  • ChrisH

@EG, werewolves hate silver, and vampires hate garlic. Just remember those two facts, and I’m sure this webcomic will be a worldwide hit.
    😉

    • SalemCat

      @ChrisH

      Huh….

An aged Vampire might still be able to hold a job at one of those CASH FOR GOLD places where they buy precious metal.

“Here, Count, check out this here Necklace for me”

“YEARGHHH !!!!!” “GET IT AWAY !!!!!”

“Solid .925, eh ? I think we got a deal at $50, miss.”

  • ChrisH

@SalemCat, ;). I don’t really expect werewolves to show up here. But that’s OK with me, there’s fairies, a dog girl, and even Old Scratch and his kid, so there’s plenty of wacky fun ahead, I’m sure.

  • ChrisH

@EG, aw, heck, without cats and girls, the whole Internet would collapse! 🙂 😉

  • ChrisH

@SalemCat, I won’t forget. Now we just need to wait. 🙂

  • Frank Harr

You crazy Canadians and your gravy.

Puck’s dress really works with her freckles.

Phoebe just DOES that to clothes. I don’t think she can help it. The dowdiest thing would turn out like . . . well a bland French maid’s outfit, but even something mildly attractive looks like that thing.
