Uh oh. LBG should not be jumping in between those two.

    • ElectricGecko

I don’t think there’s too much danger there, besides a blow to her feelings. Daphne’s not one to be physically dangerous. She inflicts more emotional and financial damage than anything else.

  • James W McCleary

    Team Daphne. All the way.

(I’m still not sure whether I’m on team “Prom” or “The-Prom,” though that was rather a discussion for last week. Although I do wonder whether I was the first one to call Hannah “LBG.”)

  • SalemCat

Phoebe’s new Voting Incentive is IMPRESSIVE.

  • LaughingDemon

I can *hear* the tone she’s using. This is me dying on the inside.
Which is a slight change-up from my usual dying on the outside.

  • If Taylor / Tyler dumps Hannah for Daphne, can Hannah find her way home?

  • Brother Parvus

I spent time reading texts to a blind college student, and that led to hanging out wth many more; I gotta tell ya, that was the least and weakest of blind puns.

  • Brother Parvus

Meanwhile, Daffy cleaves the edges of discourse like a Jesuit.

  • maarvarq

“You never really asked me” because she made quite sure that he was too scared to do so, “and I never really said No” – see previous. Whatever happens to her as comeuppance can hardly be too much.

  • Thisguy

Ok, technically Tyler never asked her and she never specifically said she didn’t want to go to prom. She did, however, made it clear that asking her would be a bad idea because it would end in male ego damage, and was generally pretty negative to the whole prom thing.
Puck did try to advise her that Tyler was ACTUALLY asking her to the prom, but I think Daphne preferred to live in denial that he didn’t.

It’s actually funny, I’ve always thought it was guys who would miss subtleties and needed is spelled out to them, where as Tyler picked up the subtleties and Daphne totally missed them. Fear has made him wise.

To be honest, knowing Daphne, not really blaming Tyler here, but he should have put on his man pants and just directly asked her. Or at least ask if she was ok with him going with Hannah. (Though she probably would have said it was fine, then done all this anyway). And in the weeks leading up to prom, she could have talked to Tyler about how she felt… yeah, that wasn’t happening.
I feel that if Tyler really wanted to go out with Daphne, he should have just skipped prom with her, and asked her to a standard ‘date’ date. She probably would have accepted, if he was paying.

To the comic itself. I love Hannah, she is very clearly trying to defuse the situation, I love how she is actually making physical contact with them, I would think that physical contact is very important to blind people. It may allow her to read people better.

I also find it funny that she jumps right into the blind jokes. Most disabled jokes come from disabled people themselves.

    • pat

      Stop it, I can’t breathe.

      ..

Oh wait, I just sat down and it’s my sarcoidosis.

    • ElectricGecko

I think what’s going on here is … complex. Daphne was not really clued out about the fact that Tyler was kinda asking her to the prom. She knew that. Rather, she was more taking umbrage with the fact that he was trying to do so in a halfhearted ‘not a real ask’ way. I do think that she really didn’t want to go to prom, but if Tyler had directly asked her and expressed that it was important to him, she likely would have said yes. She also would have enjoyed complaining about the fact that he’d dragged her into the horrible experience; that would have pleased her.

It’s the fact that Tyler half-asked, and he really wanted her to meet him halfway in the asking process. Daphne’s inherent prickliness made her fail to rise to the invitation, and it went nowhere. And she would have been totally cool with it going nowhere had he not decided to go to prom with some other girl.

Hannah and her blind jokes are mainly based on the mother of a childhood friend. She was always ready to drop a random blind pun into everyday discussion. It was endearing.

  • pat

    Well,

At least she can’t see how bad I’m breathing lately.
I mean you have no idea how many robot callers hang up on my because I can’t catch my breath.

If I was in high school again, and at that age. I’d date her. And then after the Carbon-14 we’d go and get coffee.

  • DLKmusic

So, Daphne, let me get this straight. what your saying is…

“Can’t a guy get it through his head that when a girls says NO! it means maybe.” ?

    • maarvarq

Snarls “Are you feeling lucky, punk? Well, are ya?!” or the functional equivalent, it means Maybe?

    • ElectricGecko

But she didn’t say ‘no’. This is more a scenario where Daphne is saying, “Can’t a guy get it through his head that when a girl places a fire-breathing dragon on the road to her house, she expects him to fight it?” It’s more that kind of thing.

      • That girl only has herself to blame when the guy and the dragon go to a bar together and complain to each other how she’s sending them mixed signals…

  • Kaiser

    I love terrible puns.
I am conflicted as to what I feel about Hannah’s pun in panel four.
    Hm…

    In regards to their conversation:
Tyler HYPOTHETICALLY asked if it was a good idea to ask her out. She asked if HYPOTHETICAL male egos are as frail as real ones. He, somewhat doubtfully, said “yes”.
    So, technically, she’s not lying.
Puck asked why she didn’t agree and she explained that Tyler didn’t ask for *real*.
She later said she didn’t want to go because “Proms are just a sad competetive arena where girls in high heels duke it out for social dominance”, which she said she wants no part of.
…So, no, Tyler, she never said “no” flatout to you. Ever. She might have heavily IMPLIED IT but it’s not the same as saying it flatout.

  • SalemCat

Tyler didn’t ask too hard because he really didn’t want to have his “FOREVER MEMORY” of Prom to be of Daffy the Dog-Face barking disapproval of everything from the Cheese to the Crackers.

Honestly, I don’t know how he can stand her.

  • JJR

    Daphne give great side eye.

  • ChrisH

Blimey, that Hannah has spirit! I’m glad she’s speaking up, she’s not a party decoration, after all. (And blindness puns are good, as far as I can see.) 😉

  • Badtaiming

Blow off the dog face girl and rock the LBG’s night. She will appreciate you way more. Daffy needs to be taken down a lot of notches and snubbing her will do that.
Besides if you really want a girl you need to get her to chase you. That way when you let her catch you she won’t let you go. Because she will value you way more that the guys she used to have chase her.
As for the dog face girl just look at the hoops she jumped though to get you.

    • ElectricGecko

You do note something critical there: Daphne went through a lot to get to prommageddon here. Now the question remains: did she do that because she actually likes Tyler or because he’s just a symbol of something she couldn’t possess?

      • Badtaiming

She could not give a crap about the prom it is about the boy. Does she like him or does she see him as her property i guess we will have to wait to see what way you take this story. I am hoping she learns a hard lesson and has some personal growth.

  • I like Hannah. ^_^ It takes a specisl kind of person to laugh at their own disability and just be nice.

Kinda wishing Phoebe or Puck would smack Daphne upside the pubescent head right now…

  • Commander Clash

~enters his Daphne proof bunker, just in case~ All right, I think I’m ready.

  • ChrisH

Hannah will have Daphne on a leash before the night is done!
    (Metaphorically speaking, of course.) :)) :)) :))

  • demarion

Um . . . I wonder if Hannah knows how much her “I see’ said the blind man’ remarks get to Daphne . . . admittedly Daphne deserves a few, I’m just saying that’s the sort of thing that can get really old really fast . . . if Hannah really wants to get Daphne, take Tyler out onto the dance floor for a slow number and hold him close . . . that way everybody in this little drama gets what they deserve . . .

  • Sabre

Ok. I’m liking Hannah quite a bit just from this strip. I hope nothing bad happens to her, and if it does, I hope that Puck, Colin, Phoebe, and Tyler put her in her place.

  • SalemCat

Ok, when do we see some CAVORTING ?

There is a distinct deficit of CAVORTING in Puck.

  • Ben

That’s the problem with playing hard-to-get, with teenagers who are unsure of themselves (as they ALL are). You can over-play your hand, which is basically what Daphne did, and the other player folds and joins another game….

This isn’t irreparable. They will both get over it.

  • Randy

You can do it a comic thread to span from one prom season to the next!

  • ChrisH

My gosh, look at poor Phoebe. I hope her eyes don’t pop out of her head by the time Prommageddon is over. 😉

  • ChrisH

That makes sense to me. BTW, I think I know why she’s so nice. She has half human blood, and half angel blood. Her old man was an angel before he became, um, the illustrious mayor of Hamilton. (Well before that.) 😉

    • ElectricGecko

That’s one theory. I’m not sure her mother was entirely human (she may have been an eternal force that took the manifested form of a human), but the angel angle is fun. And ‘angel angle’ is fun to spell and say.

  • ChrisH

“Angel angle” is a phrase to glean. 😉 It’s fun to play with words.
People(?) like Daphne think it’s fun to play with people- she’s always been a manipulative sort. Of course, it often goes awry, which causes humorous results.

  • After thinking about the heavy emphasis on “Really” in panel 2, I find myself unexpectedly in sympathy for Daphne. Ty did not really ask her, and that’s kind of insulting. It’s understandable, but still insulting.
The best conflicts are when everyone involved has a good point. Unfortunately they can be the most unresolveable.

  • ChrisH

Daphne isn’t stupid, but in this situation, I think she may have outsmarted herself. We’ll find that out as the prom goes on. As for Ty, I really am not sure if he handled the prom question well or not. We’ll find out about that too.

  • SalemCat

    WoW !

I just came across a rilly kewl WebComic that could give Puck a run for its money.

    NANCY

Aunt Fritzi – Hubba Hubba Hubba !

  • Jesse

I think Hannah is adorkable. I also think with Hannah available, but T(a)yler constantly having this will they/won’t they thing with Daph, he might be a masochist.

  • Nearly every disabled and/or old person I have ever met (and as a PSW, I meet many) is usually the FIRST to make digs at their disability as a source for cheap jokes.

I think the top winner coming to mind, I heard at the retirement home, with a bunch of ladies talking about how they don’t buy green bananas anymore, because they might not still be alive by the time they’re ripe.

    • ElectricGecko

Hats off to them. That’s gold.

      • Old ladies who have outlived any sense of shame are HILARIOUS! I used to come 40 minutes earlier than my appointment with my patient just to sit around the retirement home lobby couches with that group and talk about whatever crossed their mildly Alzheimer’s flavoured minds.

The day they learned that Iceland has a “Phallus Museum”, filled with taxidermized items from every animal under the sun… and happened to have gotten in the news recently because they’d finally, after years, acquired their first human phallus…
…actually I think my mind has blacked out the rest of that conversation as a defense mechanism.

Old ladies in a group are as good or better than a group of professional standup comedians getting drunk together in a bar.
