Technically she is there as a supervisor
    https://puckcomics.com/?comic=puck-459
In reality, she is there to support Daphne. In her own mind, she is probably just enjoying the sparkle of prom, and perhaps living just a bit through Daphne (or trying to).
Doesn’t really explain the outfit though, the outfit is explained purely by Phoebe being Phoebe.
To be honest, I would expect prom supervisors to be “smart casual”, noticeable, but more part of the scenery.
Although at least by breaking up this fight, Phoebe is sort of doing her job, even if it is focused on keeping just one student out of trouble.

  • Kurmudgeon

That one student is more than enough to justify a full time handler.

  • maarvarq

“It seemed like a good idea at the time?”

Also, the vote incentive picture link at TWC has been broken for the last day or so, but that’s hardly unusual for them.

  • pat

Blink? No, but her eyebrows are certainly expressive and different in each panel. All 4

  • SalemCat

Tyler is demonstrating enormous maturity here.

He is completely aware of the dynamics, and is handling them appropriately.

Yes, he capitulated to the whims of GFD (Girl-Faced-Dog) for many, many moons, but he has grown up – bigtime.

Perhaps even Phoebe has evolved a bit – and will be able to recognize worthless pukes in the future.

    Daffy is so awful.

As my brain is the size (and form) of a small walnut, I’d prolly have Palestinian Terrorists storm Prom and drag her away – to an awful end.

But that is the American in me talking.

What would Canucks do with such a wretch ?

    (Tune in next week)

    • ElectricGecko

Canadians love everyone. Always. At least when talking to them in person. We just get catty behind their backs when they’re not around.

  • SalemCat

You know, I wish SUSAN would return.

As much as I try, my Daffy-Bashing just seems – a little forced.

I suppose I’m just too too sweet, fluffy, and luvabill to pull it off properly.

  • Tyler-Taylor’s expression in the silent beat panel is just about the best thing I’ve seen this week.

    • ElectricGecko

I do love silent beat panels. Though Tyler’s face was easy to draw there. Phoebe’s face took me about five drafts.

  • Daphne does not react well when her schemes go down in flames, does she? She’s like her ma that way.

I love panel 3. Ty has grown up with Phoebe so to him she’s not dressed voluptuously, she’s just the same old Crazy Auntie Phoebe Being Inappropriate…. and she knows it!

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, I guess this whole comic and the joke don’t really work if you don’t know the dynamic of these characters well. But knowing these characters, it was the only exchange that made sense.

  • A chaperone’s lot is not a happy one.

      • ElectricGecko

I have no idea what that was, but it’s terrifying.

        • MSG Bob

          I think it’s Gilbert & Sullivan – A Policeman’s Lot Is Not A Happy One (???) I could be wrong, of course — I frequently am.

          • Yes, “A Policeman’s Lot Is Not A Happy One” is one of the most cheerfully daft songs ever … and Phoebe might take its lesson to heart.
“Pirates Of Penzance” is unabashedly silly fun. The less abashing the better. So many great songs: “I Am A Pirate King!” “The Modern Major General” and anything Linda Ronstadt sings – it doesn’t matter want.

OK, now back to our story I suppose.

        • DMC_Run

          [EG]:
You can’t recognize this? … Seriously???!?
I’m shocked! Shocked, I say! That was CLEARLY “The Pirates of Penzance”, with a cast which includes Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, & George Rose.
Still, it’s not a flawless rendition of the “G-&-S” operetta. I never liked their conceit of comparing the policemen to the “Keystone Cops”:

          • ElectricGecko

I’m not a Gilbert & Sullivan guy. I’ve seen Topsy Turvy. Know a little bit of the Mikado. That’s it. I TOTALLY did not know there was a ‘Pirates of Penzance” made with Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt in it. I grew up on Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals instead. My mom had a thing for those.

          • SalemCat

            Wicked – check
Phantom of the Opera – check
            Wizard of Oz – check
            Christmas Carol – check

My Bucket List of professional Stage Plays in First Class theatres is pretty much fulfilled.

But PIRATES OF PENZANCE might just get me into an orchestra seat again.

As for Hamilton – if I have another three or four lives I might fit that drivel in – under duress.

Along with ANY Hockey, Basketball, or Baseball game.

            SNORE

          • ElectricGecko

My wife is one of the few women on Earth who hates musicals. That means I am not dragged to them. I am thankful for this.

    • ElectricGecko

It’s not. But it can be an entertainingly miserable one at times…

  • Awkward moment in panel 3.

  • Kaiser

I like how Tyler goes from “Well, there she goes…” to “Wait, I should ask why the hell an adult who probably never attended this school is here” over the span of two panels.

I’d say I feel bad for Hannah as she’s blind and has no idea who he’s speaking to (referring to Phoebe), but at the same time, that mental image made me smile, so… I’ll call it a win.

    • ElectricGecko

I do feel bad for Hannah. I also don’t really know what to do with her in the panels, but I try my best.

      • She could casually clean her nails with a stiletto pulled out of her cane.

        That might be unexpected.

Right now she looks like a goldfish, nothing to do but gawp. What if she is a really nice person but with a bit of Arya Stark in the House of Black and White?

        • Sleel

Considering how she’s been acting like a pure unmitigated c#$% and t@#$waffle, I’d have no problems with her shanking Daph at this point. She’s been barely tolerable as a borderline tsundere/dendere this whole time. She’s pretty much crossed the line to unmitigated @$$hat at this point. Dripping at that.

  • I like the sense of motion with Daphne in panel 2. As an observer only, that seems to be very hard for a lot of artists to pull off. Stilted characters knock me out of the suspension of disbelief while I’m reading. That, OTOH, was a smooth push aside by Phoebe.

    • ElectricGecko

Motion is really, REALLY hard to draw. The imbue the character with a sense of dynamic energy is a big challenge, and it gets bigger when the character has realistic proportions. That’s why many comic artists go toward a heavily abstracted style: it’s easier to give it a sense of life. On the other end of the spectrum, that’s my big problem with lots of those CGI ‘photo-realistic’ comics made with premade human-type models. They often come across as very stiff and unnatural. They lack that sense of life.

For my part, I try to do what I can to keep things dynamic, though it’s something I struggle with. I am, however, proud of panel two.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

But if you had friend that could do the Puck cast in “CGI ‘photo-realistic’ premade human-type models” for a Guest Strip that would be so awesum.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

If you’re looking for MOTION, just check out LITTLE LULU or NANCY & SLUGGO.

And then do the exact opposite.

Jeez – Once Upon a Time standards were really pretty low.

        • ElectricGecko

Well, standards in any medium build over time. Great comic art in the 30s was subpar comic art in the 50s was laughably bad comic art in the 21st century. I mean, even looking at the art output of one dude. Kirby’s work in the 40s is way cruder and simpler than his work in the 60s – 80s.

          • T'Renn

Well, by the 80s, Kirby wasn’t pencilling literally half of Marvel’s comic output personally. Every month. As well as plotting most of what he drew.

          • ElectricGecko

Well, true. But even his stuff in the 60’s, when he WAS penciling most of Marvel’s work, was light years ahead of his stuff in the 40’s. Artists evolve. And feed off each other to raise the stakes.

        • DMC_Run

          [SalemCat]:
Yes, because “Once Upon A Time”, the tools for communicating in the format of the “Sequential Art”-medium had not yet been invented. Lacking a formal line of research, each artist just experimented, & made note of what worked-or-failed.
For example, just consider how “The Yellow Kid” had to make-do, before the invention of the “Word Balloon”!

  • ChrisH

Bad girl Daphne! Bad girl! (Whaps her on the nose with a wet, rolled up newspaper.). (This may be racist or speciesist, but she deserves it.)
    :p

    • ElectricGecko

      No arguments here!

      • I wonder whether anyone has ever tried it…

        • DMC_Run

Much like the Knights Who Say “Ni!” …
… “None have lived to tell the tail!”
          ( … no, that’s NOT a “typo” … )
          “There will be Pain.”
          “There will be Suffering.”
          “Finally, You Will Die.”
( … it’s a “Narn Thing”, you see … but don’t take my word for it – just ask any Centauri … )

  • It really says something about Daphne’s behaviour when a literal half-fiend is showing better manners. =_=

    • ElectricGecko

Well, Phoebe’s behavior is more wholesome than most people. Her outfits are not, but her behavior? Generally good.

  • ChrisH

Poor Phoebe! She’s a sweetheart, really, so much, I’d like to pat her on her head. (With her permission, and very carefully, of course.)
    :p

  • Ace of Diamonds

Bless Hannah and her sunny goldfish-face for putting up with Daphne’s presumed bullying over the years.

  • Buggle

I have not been able to come up with anything to say for several weeks – I am exhausted and have a killer headache, so I will just say this:

    heheh boooobies

  • ChrisH

I went to a health store recently and bought some CBD. (It’s meant to help with insomnia and anxiety.)I almost bought a kind designed for dogs. Maybe it would help Daphne. Something needs to be done.

  • DLKmusic

I had a snappy, fun, entertaining, and entirely family friendly comment that got edited!!!!!

Arrrggggh! maybe I should just go back to profanity! it seems less likely to get censored!

    • ElectricGecko

It got edited or trashed? If it’s edited, it’s my doing. If it’s trashed, then it’s my spam filter. And I apologize.

  • ChrisH

Just a little follow up on my last post- CBD stands for Curing Bad Doggirls.;)

  • Barnabus

her eyes are higher up kid.

  • That’s a veeeeeeeeery revealing evening gown

    • ElectricGecko

Well, Phoebe operates in a very different fashion sphere completely divorced from logic. She’s also kinda trying to relive the past that never was because she never went to her own prom. So a little bit of overcompensation too.

  • Frank Harr

Phoebe’s line at the end was the absolute most Phoebeish I can imagine. : )

  • (mouseover text: “This whole exchange must have been weird for Hannah. I mean, she didn’t even know Phoebe was THERE until now.”

I’m sure she’s fine, if understandably confused. She’s somewhat used to not knowing people are there, and this is a crowded place.
You really want to freak her, suddenly talk after two minutes of total silence in a place she thought she was ALONE.
