Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Daphne Puck Tyler (aka Taylor)Tags: crown dork prom
NOVEMBER VOTING INCENTIVE FOR ALL! So the deal here (again) is that I've been working on background images for that bonus comic I keep working on. I had some backgrounds of scenery from my city drawn and colored but nothing that would make a good voting incentive. So I quickly drew a pic of Phoebe, smacked something together and the end result actually looks pretty good! VOTE TO BE AN ENGAGED CITIZEN! As for this comic... Hey look, it's the second 'Daphne covers her face while sitting under a spotlight' in this one story arc! Though this time it's the third panel, not the fourth panel. And the location is different. And ... look, sometimes I get a little repetitive without even intending it. I apologize. In the actual hall where this comic is set, the women's washroom is not right next to the men's washroom. Rather, it's on the far side of the room. But I thought this visual setup was just too good, so I bent time and space to accommodate it.

It just looks better when the prom royalty show up at either Burger King or the White Castle together.

    • Brother Parvus

      Did you mispronounce “Tim Horton’s”?

      • pat

No… I was working on the impression that since there is an A&W up north as well as the possible McDonald’s, I went with the possibility that the Olive Garden and Red Lobster would be closed, allowing the royal court of prom access only to the royal in name establishments.

Besides, Tim Hortons equivalent is Dunkin’ Donuts. Both of them are well respected and hard working, but not up top pear for the humor needed.

        • ElectricGecko

Burger King is a viable Canadian option, though not MY choice. White Castle is not. Olive Garden is not in Canada, sadly. Red Lobster is rare and hanging on by a thread.

And besides, your choices were appropriately royalty-themed. Tim Hortons wouldn’t work at all.

          • The MOUSE

Come to Ottawa, we have TWO Red Lobsters still open and they’re rather easy to find ^_^

          • ElectricGecko

Awesome. The nearest RL is in the neighboring city of Burlington for us. It’s a little bit of a drive. But we still make the pilgrimage periodically because it’s a nice restaurant that is also generally down with children, and that’s a rarity in this day and age. Restaurants either sort into the “loud, obnoxious family-friendly” category or the “hipster cool please don’t bring your spawn” category. The old style restaurants – quiet, lots of booths, food that appeals to a wide variety of diners – are dying. At least up here.

    • ElectricGecko

If one can be a king, one is always best to be a king … of burgers. Though they don’t have White Castle up here. Like, at all. It’s sad.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

No White Castle in Salem, either.

We even lost our POPEYES !

All we got is a McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and a Wendy’s downtown right by the “Shooting Gallery”. Sad.

        Would love an Arby’s.

        • ElectricGecko

Only Arby’s here is in the mall now. I hate the mall. But I love Arby’s. Decided to overcome my mall phobia for a beef n cheddar just last week.

Popeye’s is totally taking over this section of Canada and I, for one, couldn’t be happier.

Just wait for the chicken sandwich riots man. It’s gonna make Crackistan look like nirvana.

          • Ka-ris

if you are ever in the TO area, check out ‘Chuck’s Roadhouse’. burgers start at about the same price as McD’s, but are better, and there are other choices as well.

  • Nephiliara

Is it bad that I applaud Tylers approach to common courtesy ( and practicality) but still want to hug Daphne real bad?

  • Kurmudgeon

Criminality vs looking like a dork. Those balance, right?

  • That used to be:
“You leave the prom with the girl you brought“.
    😀
Whose an obedient little kept beta-male! You are! Koochi-koochi-koo! 😛

  • Dem’s da brakes, Daph.

I forsee a potential change in behavior. Ends may not justify means, but they DO tend to encourage (or discourage) them. Really hoping Daph snags her man back.

  • Douglas Fugate

You leave with who brought you. Doesn’t mean things are over. It just means you don’t ditch your date. If Daphne wants him, she’ll get him. And the blind tiger teen has already expressed no interest in Tyler beyond a friend and prom date (recall, she’d eat him alive in a real relationship). All is not lost, and from time to time a relationship needs a reboot.

  • mermaidan

The third frame is very emotional. I care about Daphne finding a good relationship. I believe she will be better prepared to find it with someone (?) after sorting through her feelings, and understanding what she has learned about herself through other’s input. Puck’s support, is a timely salve as well as a humorous tension breaker.

  • O8h7w

He looks like a dork indeed in that crown, but he sure doesn’t act like one.

    • Brother Parvus

Well, he’s a bit thick (but so were most of us at that age); he could have suggested a follow-up date before leaving.

      • ElectricGecko

Parvus, I do agree. Heart’s in the right place, but the delivery could be smoother.

      • Kat

Eh, give him a break. Remember that he’s just as confused by all of this as Daphne, but is dealing with it infinitely better. His response shows that he’s obviously done more thinking about this than she has and is clearly the more mature one in the relationship, but he is still a teenager. Besides, he’s probably not sure that they can ever be good together without a change that he doesn’t see coming from Daphne. He’s not wrong to not suggest the follow-up without any evidence that Daphne is even considering change.

Puck is getting the hang of this Mother thing.

        • ElectricGecko

Agreed. And I’d say that Puck’s general mothering style, which has been very hands-off so far, is better suited to this teen stage of development. Emotional support – when needed – with little actual direct intervention is best.

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, he’s a pretty good guy. Some stuff could be said better, perhaps, but his heart is in the right (conflicted) place.

  • Sigurther

*sniffsniff* What’s that I smell? Smells a lot like.. hang on.. *sniffsniff* almost got it.. It’s on the tip of my tongue..

*sniffsniff* Ooooh, yeah, I got it now.

    It’s sour grapes.

  • Frank Harr

    Waaaaaaaa!!!!!!!! Poor Daph!

Good for Puck. It may be all the help she can take right now.

    I don’t think Tyler’s done. Think Tyler thinks he’s done, but I don’t think Tyler’s done.

Again! Nice framing. And there’s only so many poses a human or Daphne body can reasonably hold. It’s the right pose for the right moment for heavan’s sake.

So, this is what I missed out on? O.K.

  • bergerjacques

Daphne is going to need some reassurance … that being a mean-spirited garbage person is still okay

  • Drakeye

well that’s straight up Stellar behavior. Inconvenient Stellar behavior but still Stellar behavior.
Sorry Daph i’m with you 97% of the time but this ain’t one of those times

  • SalemCat

I really wanted a close-up of Daffy’s muzzle, with her makeup all streaked and melted from an extended crying jag.

But collapsed on the floor outside the human litter-box closets will have to do.

No one will ever notice here there, right ?

    heh .. heh .. heh ..

    😛

  • ChrisH

Puck knows timing is everything. 🙂

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, note that she’s been listening this whole time but knew better than to emerge earlier. Some car crashes just need to be allowed to occur. Then you sweep in later and pick up the wounded.

  • Justin

A good and satisfying result, very well done.

  • DLKmusic

Trying my best to muster sympathy for Daphne, and… weeeeelll….

You know, “You reap what you sow” is a very true saying, and Daphne actually got off with a very light harvest when all is said and done.

    • SalemCat

      @DLKmusic

IRL her fellow students would never let Daffy forget this humiliation.

Not tomorrow, not next month, not at her 50th Class Reunion.

      • Drakeye

but 1-49 they will let her forget it and the day after tommorow yes but not every even weekday

      • Brother Parvus

She’ll get even when she and Tyler are steadies.
        [call me Criswell!]

      • DLKmusic

Actually, I’m kinda wondering how many students at that school are brave enough to face a psycho daphne after teasing her over this.

A small handful might be brave enough, and a larger handful of kids that didn’t think about the consequences of doing so… but by and large?

        • ElectricGecko

Agreed. Girls like Daphne are usually given a wide berth. They may be talked about in disparaging term from a safe distance, but few ever mock them to their face.

Fun fact: I once taught a girl who had the Daphne death stare permanently formed on her face. Five years after graduating, she went to jail for attempted murder. I guess her boyfriend did her wrong so she cut the guy’s throat open. You know, as one does when one is wronged.

Moral of the story: don’t mock the girl with the death stare.

  • SalemCat

    THE AMAZING CRISWELL

This fellow sure led an “interesting” life.

If you do a search for images, there will be many of his predictions that were published in “unusual” periodicals.

    • MSG Bob

A terrific opportunity to say “OK boomer”– but I AM one. I did wonder if anyone besides old Angelinos and Ed Wood fans would remember Criswell. Come to think of it, I still do.

      • ElectricGecko

Well, as a non-boomer, I can say that you at least have an in with the Gen-X and Gen-Y crowd if they ever watched Tim Burton’s Ed Wood movie. Were it not for that, I wouldn’t get the ref.

        • SalemCat

As a cat well into his Ninth Life, I must say this predilection of humans to assign NAMES to Generations is more that a bit bizarre.

In fact, BOOMER is the first generation to name itself that I know of.

Yes, we have “The Greatest Generation”, but even that was assigned to elders by Boomers long past the fact.

          JUST STOP IT !!

Or I’ll ask my sibling SalemKatte for his opinion. I will, dammit, I will !

  • mermaidan

Tracee was an unexpected success at taking care of Miranda. Wouldn’t Phoebe have been a more predictable choice and might she be in the future?

    • ElectricGecko

Phoebe has never really cared for Miranda. Except that one time in a dream, but … yeah. I think that care of babies is something that is very, very far outside her comfort zone. She likes them, has no problem with them, but they scare her a little.
