Puck 536

Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Colin Miranda Puck Satan TraceeTags: babysit bet
NEW MARCH VOTING INCENTIVE! This month brings us Puck in a decidedly different style. Vote to see the cast as they would appear in OTHER comic strips! VOTE TO KEEP NEWSPRINT OLD! As for this comic... 1) No, I have no idea where those lampposts came from. They clearly weren't there in the previous establishing shot when Puck dropped Miranda off, but now ... here they are. (Real answer: the model for Satan's home is actually a historic building and does not have that driveway nor any kind of prominent artificial lighting on it, so it's an obvious thing I totally forgot to add because, you know, it wasn't there in the reference pics. But now I need some lighting, so ... yeah.) 2) No, I don't know what happened to Satan's damaged Cadillac, which was previously parked right where they're standing. Nor do I know what happened to the monkey bear. Maybe the monkey bear hot-wired the car and drove off with it? Hard to say.

Satan looks like a man who is about to get it.
    By it I mean trouble

You’d think that Co . . . I can’t remember his name! First Roddy from Unearth and now this!

    Collings?

Collen! He’s Collin. Whew! Now how do you spell it?

Anyway, you’d think Collin’s reaction would seal the bet for him, but how do you know he’s being straight. I mean, besides the fact that he’s not in the least dishonest. Poor guy.

Puck’s build continues to invite humor.

    How’s Sigmund?

    • ElectricGecko

You know that there’s a list of characters that appear in each comic right underneath the strip, right? You never need to admit you don’t know a character name again!

I speak from experience. I use the character list all the time on other comics.

      • Frank Harr

That may be so, but it was so much more fun to write.

And for a second, I’d thought you’d meant that characters from Unearth were underneath the comic. I’m glad I saw reason in time.

  • Lokitsu

You definitely lost the bet Puck. Neither of those two are the same as when they started this night.

Secondly, as a fan of old comic strips, I love the Blondie-fied Puck and Phoebe. You really nailed the classic style. It would be awesome if you could do Tyler and Daphne (and maybe Hannah) in the style of either The Katzenjammer Kids or Peanuts.

    • Lokitsu

Oh man, I can’t believe I didn’t think of this before, but you REALLY need to draw a picture in the style of Krazy Kat with Tyler/Taylor as Krazy, Daphne as Officer Pupp and Hannah as Ignatz. I know its a lot to ask, but pleeeeease.

    • ElectricGecko

We will see. Patrons voted on a bunch and as it is I’m likely going to take a while to get to them. But Peanuts would be fun.

  • Two are about to be one and one?

  • Wyvern

Now I’m curious what historical building you used as the model. Specifically, what was its original purpose?

Are you taking requests for other comics to imitate for the vote incentive? I’d love to see you do something a la Calvin & Hobbes. Or Peanuts.

    • Dan Morris

Google ‘Dundurn Castle in Hamilton Ontario’ to find everything you want to know. Us Ontarians’ lean towards hyperbole because as castles go it is really just a pretty cool old manor house. Hamilton also has a ‘mountain’ that is only about 100 metres high.

      • ElectricGecko

Thanks for covering me on that. And yeah, our mountain is a pretty bad mountain. But it IS a pretty impressive sheer cliff.

    • ElectricGecko

Calvin & Hobbes has already been selected by patrons. I may need to add Peanuts to the list.

  • aaron Smith

i just realised we have never seen puck or colin say pucks dads name… lol

    • ElectricGecko

You mean Phoebe’s dad? Yeah, no one ever says his name out loud in the comic. It’s a little detail that I stick to.

  • SalemCat

Miranda wants to stay just where she is.

And TRACEEE wants her there, too.

  • Brother Parvus

Ol’ Dan Patch gotta grin on his phiz. Looks domestic, he duz.

  • Mikey

I was thinking about suggesting 70’s vintage “The Archies”, but after looking at old strips, they’d basically look the same as your characters, but only if you removed about 70% of your attention to detail. That is, by just drawing your characters much more quickly and without finishing touches… you’d have the Archie style nailed. Nevermind.

  • ChrisH

Satan looks so happy. He must be up to something! 😉
BTW, did you know the French version of “Blondie” is called “Blondinette”? How quaint and charming! 🙂

  • mermaidan

Chick Young mothers give birth to happy babies.

  • mermaidan

Satan should put monkeybears on hold and do a background check on Papa Schnorf.

  • ChrisH

@EG, Archie style Puck is my favorite so far! 🙂

    • ElectricGecko

Glad a six year-old voting incentive is still getting approval! Maybe I should just stop drawing new ones. I feel like a lot of people wouldn’t even notice if I just started running ones from 2012.

  • mermaidan

Don’t stop. I’ve always enjoyed comic artists drawing in each other’s styles; it complements each artist.

  • ChrisH

Yes, the resulting cartoons are very amusing.
On another matter, I wonder about the bright red behind Traces. I guess it means she’s angry. It won’t be for the first time. 😉

  • SalemCat

    @EG

Ok, Ok – as a feline of few talents, and lacking opposable thumbs, don’t take this as criticism….

    BUT….

In Panel Three the Columns are drawn so close to each other, I don’t believe a human bean could pass thru.

But if the column in the middle was removed, revealing the entire door, then all would be good.

    Just sayin’

    • ElectricGecko

The columns aren’t meant to move between. There is a columnar front that holds the porch up, but to access the door you travel around and behind the columns. It’s weird. But that’s the way the building is.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

Ok, I see the error of my ways.

Satan, Miranda, and TRACEEE moved from off to the side in Panel One, to right up front in Panel Four.

        That’s the key to it.

  • demarion

Puck . . . Colin . . . there’s more. Tracee’ll probably never admit it, but she kinda bonded with Miranda a bit . . . no, really, I am sober . . . aand keep quiet about Phoebe and Papa Shnorf . . . Sure, Satan would love an excuse to vamoose, but that’ll just make Tracee angrier . . .

    • SalemCat

      @demarion

TRACEEE may be many things, but she is very outspoken and HONEST.

I’m betting she will be quite firm in her affection for Miranda. And will break out in tears to part from her.

TRACEEE could certainly have a child without making it a focus point of PUCK.

Do it, EG. For her and her kid. TRACEEE would make a fantastic mother !

      • ElectricGecko

There are a few story arcs they need to go through before getting to that point. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but … it won’t be for a while.

  • Colin’s question is very logical. I don’t think he has ever, in-comic at least, see Tracee when she was not advertizing her wares.
I’m not saying he’s never looked at her face before …
…but I’m not not saying it either.

    • ElectricGecko

Has ANYONE ever seen Tracee in an outfit not advertising her wares before now? I don’t think so. A reasonable confusion, all things considered.

  • Just Sumguy

Wow, this chapter is coming to a surprisingly neat close. You’ve introduced Hannah as an alpha blind chick. Daphne’s about to try and salvage her relationship with Delta Tyler. Puck and Colin both survived a night of being Prom chaperones. Phoebe’s gone off to get to know Papa Schnorf better, and the Devil’s about to get his due.

  • ChrisH

@JustSumguy, the Devil always does that. When you’re the Devil, that’s what you due, er, I mean do. 😉

  • mermaidan

Miranda has arguably emerged as the most powerful character in the comic having brought out maternal displays by both Phoebe and Tracee. Will Daphne be the next to succumb to her charms? One or the other may meet her match.
