Chapter: Short GirlsCharacters: Hannah Miranda PuckTags: beret blind charity cookies friendly visitors
COSTUMES COME BACK! WAY TOO STUPID!!! Are you ready for the weird? The unexpected? Well, vote for Puck on TWC to see the weirdest, least expected costumes ever! A new one's popping up each week, so... VOTE TO EMBRACE THE INSANITY!!! As for this comic... And now you see why I named this little arc 'Short Girls'. We already introduced Bethany, and now we have a returning short girl to round out the experience. Hannah's back! And wearing a beret! I think these are good developments. In other news, I found out after writing the comic that the term 'up-market' is a solely British term, and I'm apparently not supposed to use it on this side of the pond. I guess the North American term here would more likely be 'upscale', but I like 'up-market' better. It just sounds classier.

Up-market is fine, completely understood; although I did watch a lot of britcoms and masterpiece theatre growing up.

Yeah, “up-market” was clear in context. It’s not something I recall hearing before, but it has a classy sound, so communication is achieved.

It does not surprise that Puck might not instantly remember the Prom Queen. While it was a Really Big Deal to Daphne, it was just a fun night out to Puck.

I recall hearing “Uptown girl” but I’m honestly questioning a few things. Number one, how many schools are in this area. Number two, what is Hamilton’s population. And finally, just what does the population density look like.

        • Wyvern

Well, the real-life Hamilton has a population of over half a million. So I imagine it has more than a few schools.

          • Pat

Ok. However, I suppose that I could have added a few more questions. Given that Hannah here dresses smartly, I’m inclined to think that her parents work for our own a subsidiary of Moxxon Oil. Or some other sufficiently large company which can carve a niche for itself and keep it through a well trained and thoroughly renumerated staff.

Or it came from family old money.

But with that said, of those said numerous schools, is there a homogenous society economic mixture of the student population based on the areas of town covered by said school districts. Or are we looking at a stratified approach due to money having the nice places to live out on the fringes of town while everybody else gets what’s left over. It’s not gentrification, I don’t think that it’s called urban blight either.

We’ll get more on Hannah’s background later. She is not oil money. She’s a different beast entirely.

As for the nature of Hamilton as a city, it’s a half million people in a city that is highly economically stratified (as most all North American cities are). There are the rich zones, the less rich zones, and the ‘black hole of crushing poverty’ zones. Some areas in the city do have rich neighborhoods placed quite near the poor areas, but generally the money stays far away from the rougher sections.

It’s much like any American city you’ve ever seen, though with the big difference that the economic stratification doesn’t really fall along ethnic or racial lines as much. It’s complex, but in Hamilton both the poor and the rich neighborhoods are very diverse.

In a regular setup, Daphne and Hannah would never go to the same school, but they attend a magnet school that draws from the whole city. That’s why Tyler and Daphne go to the same school. We’ve never really had an explanation in the comic for this, but there is one.

Cool. Thanks Gecko. I will say that I remember driving through Detroit a few times before going through Windsor. Detroit seemed pitiful, outright filthy along the Interstate compared to some of the industrial areas in Windsor. I did drive near one of the distilleries/ distributors. Sparkling difference.

The highs in Canada are not as high, so the richest neighborhoods in Canada don’t hold a candle to the richest American neighborhoods. But the lows are not as low, and that’s key. There is a zone in almost every large American city where it’s straight-up dangerous to go if you’re not from there. But that’s rare in Canada. I could easily walk across my entire city and not fear for my life. Parts of Hamilton are poor, and depressing, but none are outright dangerous.

I can’t seem to reply to your other comment.
In Canada school districts are divided differently than in the US, you essentially get a similar education experience at most schools. There isn’t really a city school, county school system. The school districts are generally split up geographically.

Puck only briefly saw Hannah in the context of her getting crowned as prom queen. Phoebe was more active in that whole exchange. Puck was just sort of there, so it’s unlikely that she’d immediately remember her.

I think what’s done it for me is my penchant for watching British Youtubers. And yeah, I did watch a lot of britcoms growing up.

  • willis

I think Hannah should whack Puck with her cane, and tell her about the last time she met 1 of her family members.

  • Pat

    Is it a Raspberry Beret?

  • Wyvern

Considering that one of the top Google hits for “upmarket” is a high-end furniture store in Texas, I don’t think the word is totally unknown in the U.S..

  • So who is the blind girl there to see?

  • Ada K

“Upscale” sounds wrong for describing a human.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, honestly, “up-market” is a term that is more usually used to describe shoes or restaurants. But that’s part of why I find it funny.

  • sigpig

Up-Market is perfectly fine for Puck (Robin Goodfellow) since she’s FROM (I think?) Ireland.

Hamilton has some VERY wealthy areas that are NOT “on the fringes” of the city. They are as close as two blocks from some of the more needy areas. I see no problem at all with Daphne and Hanna attending the same school – especially since it’s in the regular school board, and not the Roman Catholic one, or the French one, or the French Roman Catholic one.

    • Mahnarch

I was going to say the same thing; Puck IS British/Irelandish so, it makes perfect sense.

    • ElectricGecko

Yep. The Southwest (possibly the most ‘cultured’ area of the city with legit old mansions) is only a seven minute walk from Corktown. And Corktown is … very different.

Your point on Puck is valid. Her origins are hard to pin down. In my head she speaks with a standard North American accent but if your head canon gives her an Irish lilt or an English tone, I don’t think that’d be wrong either.

    • Frank

      That’s a lot of boards

  • maarvarq

    Yay, more Hannah!

  • Demarion

Oh thank heavens, it’s Hannah! Ha, Holy Hannah! (Not really, from what she says herself, but heavens, holy Hannah, it fits. Hmmm . . . hoo boy, Hannah and Daphne together . . . poor Ty!)

    • ElectricGecko

Ty is nowhere to be found. Probably grounded after the whole Scooby Con incident.

      • Demarion

Then, depending on how it goes, poor Phoebe, or poor Hannah, should she be roped in to baby-sit Miranda. The future Empress of Earth hath expectations! (Not very high ones, not with Colin and Puck as her parents, but expectations naetheless! . . . also, if I may ask, an incentive with Hannah. One week is quite enough of BB-Minus.)

The day Puck met Hannah and maybe the answer to the question: Whose wild rollercoaster ride is the most bumpy?

    I’m betting Hannah….

  • Frank

It’s the pink beret. It reaks of status and privilage. And of being able to spell those words.

Living next to Kraistan, I don’t really blame Puck. I mean, she blongs there about as much as . . . something that really doesn’t belong wherever it is. Like me in a spelling bee, obvkously.

  • LaughingDemon

“No, thank you. We don’t want any more visitors, well-wishers, or distant relations” -Bilbo

  • Uptown Girl! She been living in her Uptown World! I bet she never had a backstreet guy! I bet her momma never tell her why!

Sorry, had to do it. I don’t care that Puck said “up market”, it still fits the context. 🙂

  • Pat

Gecko, technical website. What is with the Giant blank space that suddenly appeared between the vote image and the text block?

    • ElectricGecko

Likely an ad. If you have ad-block, that’s where the system placed an ad and you can’t see it. If you don’t block ads, it might be an ad that placed but failed to load.

  • Arguably your 600 year old fairy girl is also British in origin.
    😛

…and while I’ve admittedly never heard the term before, it’s fairly easy to intuit.

  • Douglas

    MORE……SEXY……BETHANY!!!!!

  • ChrisH

Once Puck gets to know Hannah better, I think they’ll become fast friends. It’s because of compatible personalities.
