This one was borrowed from real life. There really was a very sociable, very nice hotdog guy on McMaster campus. He was sort of a legend, and I wanted to include him in my strip. I made him Puck’s unofficial psychiatrist, and he made a few appearances. This one’s his first. He’s shrouded in mystery, just like the president of the university; thus, he’s always in shadow and you never see his face. This is also a tried-and-true strategy to make the drawing process much easier. Kind of a cop-out.
Not sure why it never occurred to me to ask this the first time through… but… isn’t it breaking some sort of hygiene regulations for him to be just handing out the hot-dog unwrapped like that? Without any sort of paper-based layer between the food and his undoubtedly unwashed hands?
Strictly speaking, such hygiene “regulations” are upon the business to set and enforce. FSIS can just inspect and poorly rate it. In very extreme cases, the business can be forcibly shut down, but unless the hot dog guy is taking his bathroom breaks into the bun and selling that as food, that isn’t likely.
