    Is Phoebe only Near-Sighted ?

Her glasses seem to be Half-Glasses; useful only for reading and sewing.

    • ElectricGecko

Her glasses never really go over her eyes, mainly because I don’t like drawing glasses over eyes. Instead, they always perch low on her face. There may be a possibility that Phoebe mainly wears contacts and the glasses are purely cosmetic.

      • DMC_Run

If she’s just ‘focused’ on how they ‘look’, those glasses might even be no more than flat panes, rather than prescription lenses.

    • markm

That would make her far-sighted – able to see distant objects quite well by peering over the glasses, but needing a convex lens to see up close.

Or they have plain glass, and she just likes the look.

  • (chanting) THIS WON’T END WELL! *CLAP! CLAP! CLAP CLAP CLAP!*

If fashion is a religion, Daffy, you might as well forget it now, because you don’t have a soul. 😛
I have tried and tried to come up with a look that a furry could wear to a prom and not look ridiculous, but have failed miserably. Of course, Phloebes, being a demon, has a soul, no matter how shopworn and neglected. So, I await developments.

  • Del Teeter

It took me until Panel 4 of this week’s strip to realize how impossibly improbable Phoebe’s shirt is.

And I totally missed the collar.

  • pat

It kind of figures that Phoebe would rather describe it as a cult than a religion. Cults can have little geographical spats between top warrior priestess. A religion has a more centralized structure (heh, auto correct suggested stricture.) That would dictate from the top down, not allowing a break out self actualized woman to Excell 2016 in the world.

    • ElectricGecko

Something like that. I also feel that fashion should be – ideally – all about your own personal style and individuality. Those that consider it an organized religion are probably sheep and getting it wrong.

      • hkmaly

People who consider Christianity organized religion are also sheep and getting it wrong, no matter how many are them. See Gospel of Thomas: Jesus said, “If those who lead you say to you, ‘See, the kingdom is in the sky,’ then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, ‘It is in the sea,’ then the fish will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside of you, and it is outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will become known, and you will realize that it is you who are the sons of the living father. But if you will not know yourselves, you dwell in poverty and it is you who are that poverty.”

        • Susan Schroeder

*ahem* The Gospel of Thomas is non-Canonical and has never been recognized by the Church.

          • Jesse

Fine, Matthew, then, 18:20, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

          • Susan Schroeder

No argument. There is more to say, but not in a comic commentary

          • ElectricGecko

Much of the cool stuff in the Bible is in the Apocrypha. It always seemed to sit out there, just teasing those poor Sunday school students. “Hey, do you know there’s a part in the Bible where Daniel fights a f#$%ing dragon by feeding it magic cakes and it F$%^ING EXPLODES?!? Yeah, but it’s not in the real part of the Bible.” What a tease.

          • Marduk

@EG There is a part in the Bible where Elijah sicks a bunch of bears on some teenagers because they made fun of his baldness. Not to mention the entirety of Samson’s life which reads like an action movie script. And a left-handed assassin (Ehud) who stabbed a king that was so fat the sword got stuck.

Not everything needs to have exploding dragons to be exciting.

          • ElectricGecko

            But exploding dragons don’t hurt.

        • ElectricGecko

Well, most quotations I hear from Jesus make me think that he was a pretty smart dude. I cannot say the same thing for quotations I hear from a great many Christian followers and thinkers that quasi-followed in his footsteps.

  • shamdon

It is weird having Daphne looking worried.

    • ElectricGecko

We will have more of that in the coming comics. Oh yes. We will have more.

      • Peya Luna

now that doesn´t sound foreboding at all 😉
what scares me even more then daph looking worried is how strongly phoebe resembles puck when she gets all serious about fashion – we may have found the one area where she *is* evil…..i only pray that she doesn´t make daph go blonde. i´m not sure the world would survive it!

  • Kaiser

The fact that she doesn’t pay much attention to the road doesn’t bother me as much as you’d think, for some reason.

Probably because she’s the daughter of Satan and does not care for the laws of the world. Or something.

What does worry me is how she considers a “cult” more “folksy”. Which, I’m not gonna lie, I wasn’t aware was a word until today. So, that’s neat.

  • Lucas

The fact that a FASHION cult would take FOLKSINESS into account kind of surprises me. But then, my knowledge of fashion is
    a) I just copy whatever wolverine is wearing
    b) People don’t like bell-bottoms any more. Maybe.

  • Drakeye

the Fashion industry might as well be a religion it has regular meeting of congregation (Modeling shows) houses of worship (major clothing stores) which accept regular donations, they help the needy (they often run charity shows).
from a very basic stand point they are the Church of Fashion…they follow a divining philosophy and set of principles that control their actions to a degree.

    • ElectricGecko

I have long stood by the concept that Phoebe’s primary religion is fashion. Given the fact that the regular kind of religion is probably verboten due to her family background.

  • Susan Schroeder

Funny, for a *fashonista,* I never see Phloebles’ outfits in Vogue or Marie Claire.

    • ElectricGecko

She beats to her own drummer. Besides, if I followed fashion too closely with her outfits, I’d end up dating comics really fast.

  • ChrisH

Daphne looks scared in the last frame. I hope Phoebe reminds her it’s only a temporary transmogrification, which will end with the Prom. Then they can go to get steaks to celebrate.

  • Susan Schroeder

Fan Art Alert! A new pic by “Superfan” Susie! In case it’s too hard to read, the title is, “Dork! Oberon just wants one flower, not the whole bush.” “Romantic Dragon” for those who aren’t fans (of Puck or Shakespeare).

  • This apple did not rot as far from the infernal tree as I’d always assumed…

  • JJR

Will Daphne find power in becoming fashionable?
Will she use this new found power for evil or good?
    Only time will tell.

  • Daphne does have a lot of hair. Is depilation an option here?

  • JR Beeler

About the voting incentive: if you want to keep Quebec in the Confederation, it would help if you referred to the “Brickheadz” (which are made of Legos) as “Kubros” (which are made from Mega Bloks) instead.

  • SalemCat

This week’s voting incentive is an ABOMINATION !

  • Did Phoebe give anyone else goosebumps and cold shudders down their back just now…?

  • If this were a teen movie, Daphne would show up as the most beautiful girl at the prom, profess her love for Tyler, and they’d leave the prom to begin that awkward teenage romance.

If this were a teen comedy, the same would happen, but there’d be a catfight between Daphne and the rival before the confession to Tyler, and the rest would play out the same.

Now, let’s see how Gecko ruins that. 🙂

  • Susan Schroeder

Still in the dark on how Daffy could look good in all that fur. Of course, if this was a Robert Heinlein novel, she would figure out that “clothes are not for {hirsutes} and just go starkers. “She was clothed in fur from the tip of her nose to her …toes…it was just all that fur. Remarkably like Chinchilla. Gorgeous.” Of course, I doubt RAH had Daffy in mind when he was dreaming up Zhai-ee-van.

  • SalemCat

Everything TRACEEE has is genuine !

Unlike a certain someone who sports fake eyebrows.

    Ewhh……

    (buy some better glue, mate)

  • Dark Waffle

I get it now… Phoebe seems superficial and clueless because her attention, her focus, and the bulk of her brain power, never leave the dimension of fashion. She only devotes a tiny fraction of her time, perception, and intellect, to the rest of the universe. I have friends who are that way about music, or dogs, or aircraft, or romance, etc…
Now I want to hear her wax poetic on the canon and doctrine… (not so much in the comic, but in a small cafe somewhere nice,)

The women I know who “live for fashion” are either “rich” or “teenagers”. I am neither, so I just follow fashion when I see something I like in a fashion mag. Phloebes isn’t into “fashion” as I know it. She is into looking good, in her mind’s eye. Whether anybody else agrees is irrelevant to her. Woe to Daffy! Hey, that sounds good! “Woe, woe, woe to Daffy. She has been weighed in the measure and found short. She will be cast into the outer darkness, where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth!”

    • ElectricGecko

On the Phoebe fashion front, we were out at a restaurant today, and my wife noted that there was a woman seated behind me who had a … unique outfit on. “She was actually dressed like Phoebe!” my wife noted. “Like, Phoebe would wear that exact outfit! Shoulders totally bare, choker, super low cut, totally defying gravity. All this time I didn’t think that any real women ever dressed like Phoebe, but I guess I’m wrong.”

It should also be noted that my wife didn’t mention this until we were well out of the restaurant and I couldn’t take a good, long look to verify.

    • JJR

My wife works in the fashion industry.
She noticed the following pattern at the companies she worked at.
The designers tend to be the least fashionable in the office (jeans and t-shirts).
The sales reps are the most fashionable.
Everyone else falls in the middle.

LEGO alert: BILLUND, DENMARK—Lego has just introduced new and improved interlocking plastic bricks that will instantly kill you when you step on them, sources at the company’s headquarters confirmed Thursday. The sharper edges in the new design will just immediately put you out of your misery, so you don’t have to roll around on the ground in excruciating pain for minutes on end. Utilizing advanced laser-driven techniques, Lego factories can now hone the edges of the famously sharp and painful bricks to such a fine point that the human nervous system instantly shuts down upon coming into contact with them.

Folksy fashion Alert: VS is now selling camo underwear!

  • The concept of camo undies boggles. Can you see it or can you not?

  • There IS a certain legal definition of a “religion” that defines it as having 500+ members, and a “cult” a group below that number… I forget what the context of the law was… maybe to apply for tax exemptions?

Anyways… I strongly suspect Phoebe’s “Cult” has a lot more than a mere 500 adherents.
