Puck 237

Chapter: The Tale of Two BlondesCharacters: Heather Miranda PuckTags: calgary evil sister maid nanny
NEW VOTING INCENTIVE: PHOEBE IN SPACE! So yeah, I came down with a wicked case of the flu, running a scarily high temperature and all that, so I didn’t get around to doing a voting incentive. Once I got better, though, I dedicated the duration of two ‘Game Grumps’ episodes to the creation of this … er … masterpiece. In HB pencil! With glorious no color! To be honest, on a labor-to-satisfaction level, I do think this picture kind of rocks. Yay for cramming at the last minute! CLICK HERE TO VOTE FOR PUCK!!! IN SPACE! WITH SHARKS! As for this comic… Finishing this one almost killed me, and it’s (obviously) not due to the challenging content. I’ve been consistently ill for the past two weeks, and this week I only remained functioning and vertical when I was hopped up on Day-Quil. I had to drag myself to the drawing board to get this done, but it’s done. Yay. Not a ‘funny ha ha’ strip, perhaps, but I wanted to more clearly illustrate the type of woman Puck’s dealing with here. And I’m aware that the punch line plays on a pop culture ref that’s older than most of my readership. Sorry about that. But if you’ve never heard the song, so yourself a favour and go check it out here. You hear that sound, young’ns? That’s called music.

    It’s Father’s day on Sunday.Mine died 12 years ago from a heart attack.He was 72.

  • Garrus

Would it be correct to assume that “favorite person” should be in quotation marks?

  • Ming the Merciless

Ha! Ha! I remember the wife having this sort of conversation with Estancias ladies in Argentina…except she did not mention her “help” were actually nieces being glad to be off from under their mum’s thumb.
My, how things change…the Ladies’ help were then Chilean and Bolivian girls…these days, an Argentine is lucky to find a job serving Chileans or Bolivians…

    • ElectricGecko

Well, the fortunes of extremely fortunate people are always subject to drastic change. I’m happy to be one of the great unwashed. I don’t have as far to fall, I guess.

      • Ming the Merciless

I quit my government job(you get a big head in there) getting driven to work and to lunch in a mercedes limo in Italy to go work in northern Ontario where they drove you to the airport in the back of a pickup truck and at noon, hop back in to the local McDonald…everybody else being ecstatic from the “privilege”…

  • Pat

I’m trying to figure out who I want to slap more. The pretentious toilet lady from “The Help” or Heather. I think I’m going to need five dollars in quarters to help me decide statistically speaking, you know, eh?

    • Nick Manly

Never watched The Help. Didn’t seem like the type of show that interested me. So that’s one vote to beat on Colin’s sister, but use a nerf bat. You’ll get the same effect eventually with the hard plastic core, but it’ll be satisfyingly slow to get there.

    • ElectricGecko

Why choose when you can slap BOTH?

      • Pat

Because Colin’s sister is here, and while I have the book, “The Help”, I have also seen the movie. And both of these women are distastefull in the complete sense of decency, tact, couth, and make me shrivel up worse than George did when he was in the pool.

    • G. Host

Get $10. Then you can get a roll of them and hold in hand when you slap.

I am so surprised they are staying with Colin rather than a hotel with services and beds they are used to.

  • To be honest, “Sisters Doin’ It For Themselves” was a very common song for me to hear when I grew up but I hadn’t heard the song in… What, fifteen years?
Thanks for letting me find it again, EG.
As for the comic, I’m surprised that Puck isn’t trying to strangle her. Yet.

    • ElectricGecko

You’re welcome. It’s a good song. And Puck does have self-control when not in serious pain. That’s why the various members of her household are still alive!

  • While Heather’s gone, the nanny is likely introducing them into evil behavior. That’s Heather’s job.

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, I think the indoctrination into evil behaviour would be the parents’ job here. The nanny might actually manage to humanize the kids for a few seconds, but eventually the evil breeding would out.

  • Alex Pyper

Is that Coffee or Chocolate Milk Heather’s drinking in that tall clear glass mug?

    • ElectricGecko

I’m guessing it’s some sort of decaf caramel macchiato or some such thing. Women like her seldom drink anything else. Maybe she packs a Tassimo with her. Wouldn’t surprise me.

  • Jesse

I’m a little amazed that Heather is still breathing. I’m pretty sure Collin would help Puck hide the body.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, blood runs deep sometimes. There’s a difference between hating your sibling and assisting in her slaughter. Though sometimes that difference is a fine line.

  • Kayla

I shuddered when read that she’s from Calgary.
Not that this kinds of people don’t exist here…. because they do, unfortunately

  • Garrus

What is she drinking in that weird glass anyway? Chocolate milk?

  • Greg White

Calgary is where the 1988 winter olympic games took place my sister Gloria lives there with her husband Brent and and her dog Teddy.

  • I enjoy that kind of humor and I don’t think recognizing the song is necessary to appreciate the ‘sisters are doin’ it for themselves’ comment. It sounds appropriately snide on it’s own.

    • ElectricGecko

Which is why I went with it. I never really like 100% of the comedy in a strip to hinge on a pop culture ref, but I felt this one worked even without knowing the song.

      • Valkeiper2012

You are correct. Though I am old enough (appearently) to have heard the song, I haven’t. It’s use here still did the job very well.

When you said Puck had self-control, you weren’t kidding. Heather would already be in a trauma center if she had done this sort of thing at EITHER of my sisters’ homes (my sisters are the violently-inclined ones of my family)

        • ElectricGecko

I think the self-control stems largely from the fact that Puck here doesn’t really respect or value the type of person that Heather is. Thus her outrageous nature and criticisms just sort of roll off. She’ll take a shot back, but she doesn’t explode. She only tends to explode at people close enough to her to actually hurt her, or at people who are stopping her from getting what she really, really wants.

That said, a line may be crossed soon enough.

  • Greg White

Did you know that Dr.Who is now in his 12th incarnation?

  • Mike Williams

LOL, I just love when you inject 80s pop culture references here and there in your dialogue. 🙂

  • Hurray! I finally got the alt text. Alt text in the archive isn’t visible on tablets. The link on the graphic preempts it. 🙁

  • Greg White

Electric Gecko I think your kids will do something very special for you on Sunday for Father’s day.

  • Greg White

If you haven’t read Mindmistress you should it’s well drawn and well written.

  • Greg White

Today’s Father’s day I wonder what Electric Gecko’s wife and kids are doing for him that’s special.

  • Zero

Puck’s hitting the nail on the head.
    Literally.

Sure we all can marry into rich families and live like kings or queens but you know what?

I’d rather pull my own weight instead of relying on my spouse’s finances.
Hence why once i’m able i’m repaying my girldfriend every last penny she’s spent on me and my brother.

    • ElectricGecko

I personally find the power dynamics in these ultra-rich suburban business families to be weird. In the cases I know, the man works long hours, travels a lot and spends little time with his family. The woman doesn’t work and ‘cares for the kids,’ which usually means managing the staff that care for the kids. It’s very Victorian. But what weirds me out is the oddly omnipotent power that it places on the business dude: that whole universe hinges on him, and any sense of equality in the relationship is just out the window.

      Ain’t healthy, I tells ya.

  • Greg White

I hope Electric Gecko had a nice Father’s day yesterday.

  • SalemCat

    i want heather’s life (sniffle)

    • ElectricGecko

I don’t. It’s always built on lies and spite. And money. The money sounds good, but not with the attendant lies and spite.

      • SalemCat

Well, I’m thinking you need MUCH more money before you can judge Heather fairly.

… so we’re going to VOTE for Puck as often as we can ! And tell ALL (um, both) of my Friends to do the same !

Puck’s going to TOP THE CHART, and before you know it, J.J. Abrams will sign you up for the PUCK MOVIE !!

        it’s possible…..

        • ElectricGecko

Well, unfortunately, I don’t think my fan base is ever going to be big enough to top the charts on TWC. And then there’s the issue of rampant botting, which (unfortunately) keeps a lot of comics (not mine!) high up on the list. But no victory is worth it if you need to cheat to get there, I say.

But let’s not get J.J. Abrams. Edgar Wright would be my first pic.

  • Dark

    Yep. Don’t like Colin’s family.

  • Frank Harr

I’ve got to admit, she does have some self-understanding. Not that that makes her a good person, mind.

  • G. Host

Too bad you do not want to publicize you webcomic in your classes.

Extra credit question: What is the name of Puck’s future sister-in-law? Of course many would get it from classmates but you would still get more hits.
