Chapter: The Tale of Two BlondesCharacters: Daphne Puck TraceeTags: baby shower point spread punch
New Weekly Voting Incentive: PUCK AND THE GANG GO TO RIVERDALE!!! For a long time, people have noted that Puck plays out a little like a demented version of Archie, so I thought, “Why not?” This month, a vote for Puck on TWC gets you a look at my progress on a Puck and Phoebe Double Digest cover! CLICK HERE TO VOTE FOR PUCK! TONY THE TIGER WANTS YOU TO! As for this comic… If anyone’s wondering how proud I am of the design for Tracee’s outfit, the answer is “Very.” My wife was mildly shocked by the outfit. “That’s a bold choice for an all-girls gathering,” she commented. “That dress is an official your husband wants to do me dress, which can be very dangerous to wear when surrounded by other women.” Which is kind of the idea, I guess. Into the lion’s den! And for those who don’t know their sports gambling terminology, Daphne’s just saying that she thinks Tracee has little chance of winning. A point spread is basically like a handicap designated to the underdog team for gambling purposes. Thus the bet would be not whether Tracee loses, but whether Tracee loses by more than four points. Which, of course, begs the … Wait, I’m explaining the joke again, aren’t I?

  • Daphne’s shirt references a meme from the early 2000s that references a movie from 1996. It’s like reference-ception in this house!

Since Heather represents the Western team (And 1st placed one, at that, with a 15 and 3 record) and the field is not “Timbit field” and the home team usually gets a 3 point advantage, I would say that that is actually a sucker bet by Daphne…

Yup, I am saying for the bet to be fair, Heather should win by at least 5 or 6 points…

i wouldn´t be so sure, daph – tracy is younger then heather, regularily works out to keep those abbs tight, and as a seasoned howlers waitress she´s got to have some cat-fight experience….whereas heather hasn´t lifted a finger in YEARS. oh hell, who cares about the winner, as long as both end up scratched and bruised i´m all in!

    • ElectricGecko

In a fight like this, everyone wins! Though I would agree that Daphne’s logic is at least slightly questionable here.

      • ComedyHobo

Pretty sure Daphne has never met Tracee.
As for a joke that’s too mainstream all I can say is “I don my wizards hat and robe.’

        • ElectricGecko

She got ice cream from her earlier.

          • ComedyHobo

I totally knew that. I was just testing you. Had to see if you knew to. Now I know that you know. And you know that I know that you know. So now we all know that we all know what we already knew. Anyway, I have something to do over there (points over there). I’m gonna go do the thing I need to do over there now.
            That is all.

It’s a series of “in” jokes… see here:

    http://www.cfl.ca/standings/2014/reg

It has been written that Heather is from Calgary. Hamilton is in the Eastern Division. It is possible that both teams could play in the league final.

  • Shamdon

So the question is will the battle be on screen or off?

  • For some reason, whenever someone says “s/he’s shorter than I remember,” it generally goes downhill for whoever said it shortly thereafter.
Also, thanks for the information for those of us who didn’t understand the gambling joke.

  • Probably wearing shorter heels today.

    • ElectricGecko

I don’t think she’s capable of wearing flats, so slightly shorter heels perhaps, but not too short.

      • Susie Schroeder

My “Comments” section is messed up. All I get is a dark background and the avatars 🙁

        • ElectricGecko

Uh, weird. I can only guess that the grey posting box didn’t load properly for some reason, so the black text couldn’t show up properly against a black bg. I’ve just loaded the page on multiple systems and multiple browsers, though, and it loaded fine.

  • Thisguy

Yeah, while I get the gist of the gambling, the technicalities are alien to me, that and probably the sport to which they are referring.
Anyway, Tracee does seem to be going with the “look at me, I’m young and hot, and you’re old and ugly” theme, I guess that sleeping with the devil must make her think she’s invulnerable or something.

    • ElectricGecko

Fun fact: I have to explain the intricacies of sports gambling to my grad twelve English class each year because of the ‘wager on the fencing match’ scene in Hamlet. But yeah, methinks that Tracee’s power has gone to her head. Mind you, she might be right.

  • I wish I had some popcorn to enjoy the show.

  • Yes, there shall be punch.

Also kick. And hair-pull. Et Cetera.

    • ElectricGecko

I really should have gone for the obvious punch line, I guess.

      • I liked the handicapping question, because I’ve never figured out how to score a fight of this nature (except the obvious “everybody watching wins!”

As for a punch line, so many people may wish to clobber those two that it may be safer to avoid queuing up, and just taking a number. Ba-da-bing!

  • Rock

I’d feel sorry for Tracee because her first baby shower is a trap if I didn’t vividly remember her trying to help Old Nick try to get two teenagers to have premature sex. =_=

  • Greg White

Puck and company at the Olympics would make a interesting vote comic.

  • Wenthral

Actually I have suspected for awhile now that this whole thing is going to backfire and Tracy and Heather were going to wind up on the same side.
What I don’t understand is why Puck just didn’t tell them all to get out and never return…Making sure they aren’t walking out with her baby that is first.
I mean this is Puck for gosh sake all she really has to do is wait 30years and come back to either and say “Hah! who’s old and saggy now?”

    • ElectricGecko

I think that we passed the ‘Get out of my house and never return’ point a while ago, and have entered the ‘I want to watch her suffer’ phase. In fact, Puck acknowledged a few strips ago that she needed to act fast in order to get revenge before Heather left for Calgary. So yeah. All about the vengeance. Or all about the bad storytelling. One or the other.

  • Where do you come up with these outfits?

Also, not betting until I see them both and can size them up appropriately.

    • ElectricGecko

The outfits spring from my inner drag queen, I think. I don’t dress in women’s clothes, but my characters do, and that works for me.

      • Valkeiper2012

hmmm… does your wife or daughter(s)?

Let me guess. Your wife wouldn’t be caught dead in an outfit like that and wouldn’t allow HER daughters to even think about it.

Let’s ignore that glare she’d send your way as she says it, ok?

        • ElectricGecko

My wife is unfailingly tasteful in her clothing choices, and consistently looks amazing – tastefully amazing. My daughter is, personality-wise, a lot like Phoebe, and regularly chooses the brightest, shiniest, gaudiest things from her wardrobe to wear. Part of it might be the fact that she’s five, but I’m guessing her wardrobe choices will get pretty crazy in a decade or so. Whatevs. Either way, though, I don’t tell girls/women how to dress. I’m too smart to risk such danger.

          • Valkeiper2012

            ahhh… the teenager…

that creature who less than a decade ago was a wonderful child.

Now, he/she is trying to prove to his/her peers he/she is no longer governed by the ‘older’ generation by doing whatever he/she thinks would irritate said generation.

  • JasonAW3

As much as I want to see this plan go off exactly as Puck what’s, I can only see it going horribly wrong. The two blonds are going to become best of friends, likely with Colin’s sister moving into town making things exponentially worse.

The true horror here? They literally brought it on themselves…

  • DLKMusic

Gotta agree with Puck on this one… what constitutes a point in a blonde on blonde cat fight?

    • ElectricGecko

You’re the first to ask this pertinent question! My perspective would be that a point would be awarded along the same lines as they’re awarded in most martial arts matches, for each act of violence which connects forcibly with the foe. Extra points might need to be awarded for inflicting serious inury, like dislocating joints, breaking limbs, or giving black eyes.

  • Mike Williams

Something else that has always impressed me about your strip: You seem to have a very good eye for elaborate and/or risqué fashion when it comes to the hot women in Puck.

Now that could come from references in certain magazines you research or your accessing the visual cortex in some sordid compartment tucked away in your head.

    I’m jealous, man. 😀

    • ElectricGecko

I refer to no fashion magazines (or reference pics of any kind). It’s all from that certain section in my brain. And mostly, it just involves taking skin-tight outfits and cutting shapes out. Glad it works, though.
