Chapter: The Happiest Place in OntarioCharacters: Colin Daphne Tyler (aka Taylor)Tags: shnorfs
MAY VOTING INCENTIVE! MAY FLOWERS! This month’s voting incentive is special! It’s tasteful and bucolic! Vote! QUEEN VICTORIA WANTS YOU TO VOTE!!! ALSO… And as for the comic… FYI: Once upon a time, the real world equivalent of Canada’s Funderland had a Hanna Barbera themed children’s land, and during the mid eighties, there was a walk-through ‘ride’ version of Smurf Village. It was sort of like that ‘Small World’ ride at Disney World, only with animatronic Smurfs instead of animatronic fat kids. The animatronic Smurfs sang used to sing that inane Smurf song. On repeat. Forever. I’m sure one of the circles of hell involves being locked inside that ride with no means of escape. In real life, the ride (and the animatronic Smurfs contained within it) departed for that great theme park in the sky a long, long time ago. It happened during that long, dark age when Smurfs held no cultural sway. But in my alternate reality version of Canada’s Funderland, the off-brand Shnorfs still frolic and sing. Long live the Shnorfs.

Maybe if you do what she says Tyler, Daphne will let you have supervised visits with your balls.
Every other weekend for five hours.

  • pat

What does the blue hue in panel two represent?

  • Why would she want to steal something so difficult to steal?

  • DLKMusic

Run, Tyler, RUN!!! RUN LIKE THE WIND!!!!

    Damn…. too late….

To Tylers, manhood, independence, an self respect, RIP.

  • About the only part of my one and forever only trip to Disneyland featured being trapped in “It’s a Small World After All”. Endless rooms of mindless animatrons gaping their yawps at us as the song repeated on endless loop – we glided through on boats (of all thing) praying for an end to our suffering – and yea verily the power did go out!

We pulled ourselves along by grabbing the walls until our boats reached a side door and safety. I never saw an official exit, and never shall.

No doubt each and every such animatronic idol is coated with ways of fear and boredom, rendering them useful ingredients in a spell to combat teen angst – hence the intent to steal.

And Tyler, like a good minion, knows better than to cross Mistress.

That’s one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever heard. I did actually get stuck on a ride at Disney World, but it was that mountain flume ride thing, I think. We were on the hill for twenty-five minutes. See? That kind of crazy crap NEVER happens at Canada’s Funderland.

  • Y’know, you can just see the other car right behind them. Bold move, making them first into Funderland…

    • ElectricGecko

Well, it’s supposed to be a road, so there’s just traffic behind them. I’m assuming they’re not at the park yet. But maybe they are. I dunno.

      • It *is* a red car behind them…

        • ElectricGecko

It’s probably Phoebe’s car, yeah. But they’re on their way, on a road. I think.

          • Valkeiper2012

There’s only one other person in the car with them… Colin.

It looks to me like Colin is listening to this. I doubt he’ll do anything about it (beyond telling Puck). He has learned to leave the females around him be (look at the trouble he has gotten into even then).

          • ElectricGecko

I don’t think he’ll even bother to tell Puck. Hear no evil, see no evil, don’t get punched.

As a programmer/sysadmin by profession, I’ve seen my share of people pulling insane stunts that begged the question – why on earth would anybody want to do that? And the answer, inevitably, was – “Because I can”. So I am not wondering why Daphne would want to steal an animatronic smurf. On the other hand, she might have some interesting plans for it. Of all the characters, Daphne is the one I have most trouble figuring out.

Also, I really love the Tyler-Daphne-dynamic. They really do act like they’ve been married for years. I am not sure if I would act the way he does, if I was in his position, but I sure can’t blame him.

    • ElectricGecko

Daphne has her reasons. We will learn her reasons eventually. She’s not really very hard to figure out, I think. She’s motivated by only three things:
      (1) A desire for money, preferably ill-gotten
      (2) A sporting love of the swindle or con
      (3) Her strong affection for friends and loved ones
The order and strength of these motivations vary, but they’re pretty constant.

  • Kaiser

…Is it wrong I instantly thought ‘great, 5 Night at Freddies incoming’ upon reading that she wanted to steal one of them? Probably. Don’t really care in the end, so eh…
As for those murdering you in your sleep, I’d say it’s about 45% on average. Damn buggers are evil, I tell you. EVIL!

    • ElectricGecko

I’m not going the ‘Five Nights At Freddie’s’ direction, but there’s a part of me that wants to. No, I’m going to keep things a little more realistic, because this is a realistic comic. Starring a fairy and the daughter of Satan. I pride myself on the realism.

      • John

Plus a whatever Daphne is. Do you know? Do you care? Do you plan to tell us?

        • ElectricGecko

To answer the three questions, no, no, and not unless I come up with a really cool idea. A long time ago (like fifteen years ago), I sort of had an idea to introduce Daphne’s birth mother as a character, but I don’t think I’ll be rushing into that plot line any time soon.

  • Wyvern

RE: The vote incentive – I don’t think Queen Victoria would have approved of Puck’s apparel.

  • Wyvern

I just noticed that Daphne’s ears flattened in panel 3 when she got angry. That. Is. Adorable. (Well, not so much the way they look in panel 3, but the way they stand up in panel 4.)

    • ElectricGecko

I love emotive ears. It’s a terrible failure of human physiology that we don’t have them.

      • SotiCoto

We have eyebrows. Not only can I emulate feline language using my eyebrows instead of ears… but I can do it to an extent that cats understand it.

  • Susan Schroeder

I loved Daphne’s emotive ears, but Phoebe’s last week were more adorable still. Well, of course they have the advantage of being attached to a adorable space cadet instead of a smartypants teenager channeling Bonnie Parker.

  • Mooki2000

Great! Now I have the silly song from “Small world” etched in my brain.

  • dave

Is Daphne’s shirt inspired by Diesel Sweeties?

    • ElectricGecko

Not directly, no. It’s inspired by Zelda, but great minds think alike, so … yeah. I’m actually very uninformed about the world of other webcomics, mainly because I’m often too busy making my webcomic.

  • FYI, my mind goes more toward the snorks than the smurfs from “the Shnorfs”.

Which has its own set of horrors, but I digress.

    • ElectricGecko

Which were their own underwater rip-off of the Smurfs, right? Maybe the Shnorfs will be somewhere in the middle.

      • pat

Great, nsfw characters forced into a children’s cartoon. No wonder she wants one. To make it tell the horrible truth about it’s origins.

  • Mike Williams

LOL her side-eyeing was so effectively conveyed, that even I was punked for a moment there.

    This should be GOOD. 😮

  • Something interesting about the Smurfs; the original french “Les Schtroumpfs Noirs” Smurf story is the precursor of the modern zombie story; In it, a Smurf is bit by an unusual stinging insect which spreads a virulent disease that turns its victims into angry, insane black creatures that hop around shouting “GNAP!” while also mindlessly trying to bite every smurf in sight to spread the plague. As the Smurfs try to contain the infection, the Smurf patient zero regains enough intelligence to disguise himself as a regular Smurf, infiltrate the village and further spread the Smurfy disease.

  • TheWalkingAnomaly

I just wanted to say that the robin in Puck’s hand in the incentive picture did not go unnoticed*. Nice bit of wit, there. 🙂

*Well, honestly, I didn’t notice until today. For some reason, the bird in Puck’s hand was not my initial focus. 😉

    • I check the voting incentives the day they are changed over, just to see if the Gecko is trolling us or not, like he did way back when the voting incentive was “Puck naked”, and it turned out to be Alpha Flight’s Puck instead of his character. Sometimes, like the past two months, I get a pleasant surprise. 🙂

      • ElectricGecko

Yeah, that’s two non-trolling incidents in a row. That means it’s time to troll in June!

        • No troll cheesecake please. The very concept is … disturbing!

          Shnorfs cheesecake OTOH ….

          • ElectricGecko

Agreed. Troll cheesecake is disturbing. I’ll leave that to the 900 various D&D-inspired webcomics, all of which seemingly have a desire to ‘depict the fantasy world through the novel perspective of the monsters.’ Which always seems to lead to troll cheesecake somehow. They’re welcome to it.

    • ElectricGecko

It’s amazing what one can notice when one looks at the same picture over and over again. And over again.

  • Jocelyn

You know, one would think that Tyler would be used to this by now. All well, it was well worth it just for panel three. The facial expressions, the effect you created with the speech panels, all are brilliant.

    • Jocelyn

      Speech bubbles* …my bad

    • ElectricGecko

I think he is used to this, but you still can’t help but express that initial blast of disbelief in some fashion.

      • Robin

One would think that by now Tyler would have learned to not question Daphne. However, if Tyler didn’t question her, the story line wouldn’t be as funny and entertaining.

        • ElectricGecko

And if Tyler didn’t question her, I wouldn’t get a chance to drop this necessary exposition! The ends always serve the means. In goofy comics, anyway.

  • Greg White

Puck as a scythe slayer would be awesome as a vote comic.

  • SotiCoto

    Tyler is so whipped.

There is really no excuse for him being so spineless.

  • SalemCat

    Pity Tyler.

He thinks the way into Daphne’s nethers is by kowtowing to her every command.

This is not the way of the world.

  • ComedyHobo

Tyler/Taylor seriously needs to get his b!t¢# in line. In his case I think a rolled up newspaper would be appropriate. He’s gonna need to do it off-panel though; if he doesn’t someone is likely to call PETA

  • L.K Crocuta

I cannot abide by the smurfs. My sole exposure to them was being forced to watch them in elementary school during indoor recess when I wanted to go read but the adults wouldn’t let me no matter how much I begged. Permanent negative associations. I have the same chip on my shoulder about Popeye the sailor. Insufferable.
