Puck 461

Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Colin Miranda Puck Satan SigmundTags: baby babysit hamster pit
NEW VOTING INCENTIVE! CAR WASH! There's another bonus preview image for the car wash bonus comic that's appearing in Puck Volume Two ... eventually. This one features the actual washing of cars, so check it out! VOTE FOR PUCK BECAUSE IT ALLOWS YOU TO EXERCISE YOUR FREE WILL! As for this comic… I could potentially fill hundreds of comics detailing the various bizarre forms of entertainment that Satan might have concocted for small children. But then this comic would essentially become a demonic version of the Addams Family, and that was already a brilliant comic. I don't need to tread that ground again. Except this one joke. Allow me this much. Note: I mostly hate most of the pictures I draw and think they generally suck and look broken. But I do kinda like the shot of Puck in panel one. It is the first drawing I've made in the past five or six months that I'm marginally proud of. Mind you, I might wake up tomorrow morning and think that it sucks. That happens a lot too. But for right now, right here, I think it looks passable. And that's ... rare.

    Huh.

Colin makes yet another bad decision.

And Robin makes a good one.

Come to think of it, Robin makes a lot of good decisions.

And if she had not adopted Daphne, both their lives would quite likely be worse.

    Get Lemons – Make Lemonade.

Sometimes rancid Lemonade – but still…..

I hope there are no hamsters at the MacTavishes!
    😉

  • Thisguy

    Can’t fault Puck’s logic.

I also believe that’s also the sweetest thing Puck has ever said about Phoebe.

  • Would’a thought Miranda was weaned off eating hamsters a while ago.

  • pat

This is the same person who is not only friends with Mr. Smacky, but also decided to go to Canada’s Funderland, and.. I forgot.

  • Panel 3: Hmm, Puck makes a really good point.

    Panel 4: OH GOD NOOOO!!!

It’s the whiplash that makes it funny !

    • ElectricGecko

I’m glad it works. Really, panel four is kind of disconnected from the first three and I don’t explicitly set it up, but I thought the sheer randomness of it was funny.

  • Thisguy

    Can’t argue with Puck’ logic.
Also, I think that’s the nicest thing Puck has ever said about Phoebe.

    …I’m sure I already submitted this comment…

  • And at no time does Puck consider the possibility that Phoebe turned out the way she did in a rather low-key rebellion against her father’s influence. =_=;

As for Daphne… Well. She was a little con-artist well before they met, and she’s actually making slow changes right now. I wouldn’t discount the positive influence Colin had on her. And Puck, too, I guess. 😉

As someone who can’t draw to save my life, I rarely (if ever) have any issues with the pictures (I think it’s been *once* that I commented on something being off in a Puck comic? I forget. Hm.)

As for the comic: I am now curious if the hamster pit will make an appearance. That might sound slightly more hilarious than it actually is. Or it’s more awesome than it sounds. There’s likely no inebetween.

    • ElectricGecko

That’s good to hear, because I rarely (if ever) don’t have issues with the pictures in my comic.

As for the hamster pit, I think we’ll probably have to throw it on the pile of ‘weird stuff that people say is in Satan’s mansion that we’ll never get to see’, along with the room full of candy.

  • Doug

I think your drawings are always amazing…however it’s funny you mention “broken” in this strip. You forgot to color in Puck’s sock in panel 3. Sorry to bring it up.

  • Deyo

Um, fresh hamsters compared to what?

  • demarion

Okay, Miranda is going to Satan’s place. Satan’s mansion . . . that has a hamster pit . . . a pit filled with somewhat-cute squirming furballs . . . this is not good, Miranda is never going to want to leave . . .

  • ChrisH

Huh, I guess Satan is too proud to deign to enter Puck’s humble hovel. Still, I’d rather a bunk on a tugboat than a spacious cabin on the HMS Titanic.

  • ChrisH

Well, we all know Satan was forced out of his previous home to a place which, um, he didn’t want to go. On a brighter note, he became its head of household. At Puck’s, he won’t even be that. That sounds like going to something that rhymes with gel, but then I’ve already referred to that. My argument is becoming circular, isn’t it? Time to sign off. 😉

This comic brings up so many questions. Where does one buy hamsters in bulk? What are the shipping rates? At that many, are they considered livestock at that point? Do they have hamster wranglers? What’s the name for a group of hamsters? Is it cute, or terrifying, this hamster pit? So many questions.

    • ElectricGecko

      1) I’m sure there’s a wholesaler. Somewhere. I just Googled ‘hamsters in bulk’ and I got an array of results, some comical/satirical, some disturbingly serious.
      2) Shipping rates, I’m sure, are easy to inquire about at your local courier.
      3) I’m pretty sure hamsters are livestock even at one unit.
      4) A group of hamsters is called – no joke – a horde. A horde of hamsters.
      5) The hamster pit is, without a doubt, cute and terrifying in equal measure.

Any other questions I can answer?

      • The answer, following Ellis Parker Butler, may depend on whether they are related to the guinea pig:

        Pigs Is Pigs

      • demarion

Actually- I remember reading in grade school a story about guinea pigs shipped by rail to be a little girl’s pets . . . the railway company wouldn’t release them until her dad paid the fare for pigs (it’s been a while, it was something about that), he refused, so the guinea pigs stayed in the station reproducing . . . it ended with the station master declaring ‘pigs is pets an’ turtles is pets an’ cows is pets and they all get charged the same price!” Alas, by the time it was figured out what to charge for guinea pigs the family that ordered them had moved, so the guinea pigs had no place to go but the rail station . . . so, I suppose if Satan is willing to accept guinea pigs at a reduced price in place of hamsters they finally have a place to go . . . anybody else remember that story?

  • Wyvern

“What the hell” indeed. I see what you did there.

Also: I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve noticed the perpetual shadow.

  • ChrisH

Just looking at his jacket and trousers I can tell he must be Satan: only he would have the bad taste to wear a red double breasted jacket with tan pants. BAD. ;))

  • ChrisH

Satan’s aura looks copper-colored on my Apple. I hope dear EG, you did not intend to demean in any way, this beautiful, useful metal, which I am sure is mined frequently in your fair land. 🙂

  • Matt Hanley

Kinda just hoping that the hamster pit will involve Miranda giggling as she plays with a ton of hamsters.

  • JustSumGuy

Yea, I find it hard to argue against Puck’s framing on this one. Satan’s definitely got a bad rep, but Phoebe turned out classy, feminine, and surprisingly well rounded. Something a lot of women aren’t these days.

Colin might want to touch base with the Devil-man and get some insights into that as his daughter Miranda might be the only other kid he’ll ever have with Puck.

    • ElectricGecko

I’m sure any good parenting on Satan’s end was purely accidental. Just as any terrible parenting on Puck’s side is accidental.

  • ChrisH

It looks like Coin just remembered an important detail for prom night- somebody needs to babysit the kid. Well, we all know who’s in the details, right? (Snicker, snicker, guffaw, guffaw.) 😉

  • Thinking about “I do kinda like the shot of Puck in panel one”. It is nice. Is this the 1st time she’s been in that particular pose – reclining in a sort of 3/4 view? It’s relaxed, with Puck anticipating neither scheme nor crisis, which is a thing we don’t see Puck do so often.

    • ElectricGecko

That sort of pose has been done before, but maybe not that exact pose? I try to avoid repeating whole poses from comic to comic. Though there are certainly some tropes that pop up in my posing, particularly with hand gestures. Case in point: the most common hand position of any character in this comic is to have the fingers splayed out with the middle two fingers touching but the index and pinky splayed out. It looks nice, but few people ever put their hands like that in real life because, well, like the Vulcan ‘Live Long and Prosper’ finger pose, it’s kind of hard to do.

  • pat

Gecko, did I tell you what number three was yet?

  • Frank Harr

    I like your art.

  • Pat

I forget, had anyone inquired if Mr. Bubbles changed hands in relation to their parenting skills?

  • …Letting a toddler play in a pen filled with a dozen or so hamsters sounds…
…actually quite adorable, and delightful to the child.

Until they start biting, I guess. (any of them)

  • Was this the first time the hamster pit got mentioned?
