Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Daphne PuckTags: battleground prom right hook
NEW VOTING INCENTIVE! CAR WASH! There's another bonus preview image for the car wash bonus comic that's appearing in Puck Volume Two ... eventually. This one features the actual washing of cars, so check it out! VOTE FOR PUCK BECAUSE IT ALLOWS YOU TO EXERCISE YOUR FREE WILL! ALSO... This comic has an alternate joke that I wrote as a first draft concept. If you'd like to read the take I didn't use, then you can check it out on on my Patreon page where I just posted it. This is also as good a time as any to say a big thanks to the devoted and generous people who throw a few dollars my way every month on Patreon. It's really a big help and keeps the comic going, especially as ad revenue keeps getting less predictable for me. The donations on Patreon let me keep going, so thanks to those fine people. If you want to see who those people are, check out the 'THANKS' page in the menu bar.

Don’t be disrespecting Puck, Daphne. She’ll put you in the doghouse.
    Metaphorically, of course. πŸ˜‰

    RE VOTING INCENTIVE

    Oh No !

    Satan has a ’76 Cad instead of a ’66 ?

    That’s simply sad.

Live a little with THIS beast.

Still, the PITCHFORK Hood Ornament may just make up for it.

  • pat

What is the teeny tiny script on her shirt?

    • Just guessing but: Say Hello To My Caffeinated Friend ??

      • ElectricGecko

“Say hello to my chocolate blend.” YouTube. Search Dunkaccino. You can’t unwatch it once you’ve seen it though.

        • pat

          My, my, my.
Now that I’ve witnessed your treasonous zest of a zany zing in bakery humor at –>https://youtu.be/AeLuQQH1OHA

I’ve dismissed the possibility of a revisit to the sister’s suitcase, as scatalogical as that was.

          • Wyvern

Wow. That was… embarrassing. Nobody should ever ask Al Pacino to rap ever again. Chris Cooper does it much better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS_gCOtM75U

          • ElectricGecko

Making old guys rap has been a source of cringe-worthy humor since time immemorial. Only Vincent Price made it work.

          • pat

I couldn’t hear what he was saying or signing. I was too caught up in the possibility of a take on Christopher Walken’s dancing music video.

And ad a marketing note, it did not make want neither a dunkin donut nor a creuller.

          • ElectricGecko

It is not, in fact, a real ad. It’s a weak attempt at ‘ad parody’ from the terrible Adam Sandler movie ‘Jack and Jill’, which (it must be noted) may actually be a real ad disguising as a fake ad, which Dunkin’ Donuts may or may not have paid for to put in the movie.

It’s since become a meme-type internet thing, based mostly on the cringe-inducing nature of the footage.

        • Jesse

What. The. Actual. F**k?! What did Sandler have on Al to get him to do… whatever that was?! Sweet Zombie Jesus, I never want to see anything like that again. On the bright side, at least it wasn’t Tyrion Lannister in Pixels.

          • ElectricGecko

Oh, trust me: that section of the movie was the least embarrassing thing they had Al Pacino do. ‘Jack and Jill’ is just a veritable tempest of awful. Though to be fair, Pacino is by far the only redeeming part of the movie, and it seems like he’s having fun, for what it’s worth.

        • Some things are so bad they’re good.

          Some things are just bad.

  • I’ll bet by the end of it all she won’t be caring less.

  • chrisH

In panel 2, Puck looks flabbergasted. Well, maybe she isn’t, but I just like to post the word “flabbergasted.” πŸ˜‰

I have no idea what I was expecting when I saw that it was going to be a car wash voting incentive.
That… Was probably not what I was expecting. I think. Hm…

I like how Daphne refers to this as “a war” and seems hellbent on winning it despite her seemingly (or real, knowing her) only reason for going there is to punch another person in the face for “stealing” her “boyfriend” (I use “steal” and “boyfriend” fairly loosely here).

    • ElectricGecko

Well, if you know the standard tricks of narrative, the fact that a character is constantly telling you it’s going to be a war is probably a good sign that it … won’t be.

  • SalemCat

My Tail (if I had one) would be twitching with excitement over Daphne saying “I couldn’t care less”.

I often think the modern “equivalent” was invented simply to annoy me, personally.

    • SalemCat

On the other hand, GO SOUTH as being a bad thing is an expression that must be a local Canadian term.

What could be possibly bad about Going South ?

In the USA that is where the Northern half of the country dreams of visiting during the BRRRS and ARY’S.

      • ElectricGecko

Hmm. Well, it’s listed in the ‘American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms’, so maybe it’s just localized to certain areas of North America? No one seems to be confident where the phrase comes from. But I like the idea that it’s connected to the stock market, where ‘going south’ on the chart is always a bad thing.

      • Typeminer

I think go south is related to sold down the river. The further south, the worse the conditions for slaves.

        • ElectricGecko

That’s one of the theories. Though apparently none are definitive.

        • SalemCat

Centuries after the Plays, the English-Speaking world still quotes Shakespeare, and we understand the meanings and their origins.

But I think reasonable people could agree that a saying such as “Go South” has lost any definite explanation, and has outlived any relevance it ever had.

That’s why I never use it. IMHO it is dated and ignorant.

Which is why I suppose it is perfect for Daphne πŸ˜›

      • What could possibly be bad about going south to an American, you may ask? Why, hurricane season, of course!

    • ElectricGecko

What’s the modern equivalent? Is it “I could care less”? Because that’s not modern. It’s just wrong.

  • SalemCat

    RE: Patreon Alternative Captions

After worrying the walnut in my head that passes for brain matter, I have concluded that the Patreon Alternate Caption is preferable.

Because it gets me thinking about meal-time.

    (and is funnier πŸ™‚ )

    • ElectricGecko

Well, I kind of agree. It might be funnier. But it’s also weirder and a little more confusing. Oh well. Both are now available for the Patreon crowd to judge.

  • Drakeye

mean right hook but a soft left….i hope.

  • Barnabus

She looked MUCH better with the old hairstyle.

  • ChrisH

I think Daphne’s hair is perfect for the prom. It’s too bad she’s part dog, I think she’d be a beautiful girl if she were fully human. Maybe the fact she isn’t, is why she’s so anti-social. It seems more to me than just typical teenage rebelliousness and snark.

    • ElectricGecko

Daphne’s anti-social nature (I think) extends more from a deeply misanthropic core part of her being, which she shares with Puck. The primary difference between them is age. Daphne is still young and thus rails against the world through snark and semi-criminal acts. Puck is old and has fallen into sloth and indifference. Both characters really do serve as a self-portrait of me, in some ways.

The ‘dog girl mistreated’ concept is interesting, but we haven’t really seen it manifested in any clear way in the comic. It always seems like no one in the wider world really recognizes that she’s different from anyone else. So I think an entirely human appearance wouldn’t really fix what’s broken in her soul.

      • On the one hand, no one seems to notice that Phoebe has horns and a tail. This seems to be a very accepting world. No one noticed the ears on Puck or Miranda either.

On the other hand, if people noticed Phoebe’s extras, it might help her get tips in Howlers (not that she’d ever be overlooked there anyway.) And her daddy might have gotten elected not DESPITE being obviously Satan … but BECAUSE of it.

        We may never know.

        • ElectricGecko

I stand by the concept that people do see the ears, the tail, the fur. They just don’t really think it’s worth commenting on, sort of like if you saw some dude with a massive tattoo. You’d see it, you’d think it’s weird, but you’d probably not actually say anything.

    • HKMaly

      … isn’t this speciesism?

      • ChrisH

@HKMaly, i was wondering if Daphne felt bad about her appearance, because she may consider herself lacking in physical beauty. Many girls are sensitive about their own looks IRL.

  • demarion

I somehow have the feeling the prom will not go quite as planned. Something will happen, something that will infuriate Daph. For instance, she gets to the prom to find out Hannah is in the hospital for appendicitis and Tyler is at her bedside waiting hand and foot on her. Her hated rival has her property at her beck and call . . . alert the fire department, sound the alarm, man the barricades!

  • Badtaiming

Joe joe the dog faced girl needs some serous comeuppance.

  • ChrisH

KARMA IS A BITCH !!! (But some bitches bite harder than others.)
    πŸ˜‰

  • ChrisH

@EG, well, my alternative post WOULD have been “Her karma will run over her dogma.” but that didn’t really seem to fit. πŸ˜‰

  • 1) Puck, you gotta hit em where it hurts if you want a reaction (despite parents doing so making me want to hit THEM). You gotta be all like “Hey Daph, Collin, Phoebe and I are going to be at the prom rooting you on in getting your man, Taylor, back”

    2) I think Daph is underestimating the territory she’s in. If you want to beat someone playing their game, you have to utterly and completely destroy them. She’s talking a good game, but does she have the experience to do so? All they’ve got to do is lampshade the fact that she’s dolling up to get her man back and her plan is shot full of holes. (see point 1)

    3) On that note, Daph said earlier that “[OG] me was a non-starter”. If it was, would Taylor hang around you? Like, at all? I understand venturing away from the norm from time to time, but you’ve got to have an appreciating for the core of who you are at the time, or you’re going to have a hard time.

    • ElectricGecko

I think we can all agree that Daphne’s plan is a terrible, terrible plan doomed to failure. We’re all pretty much going along for the ride merely to see how it fails. That’s where the sport lies.

  • SalemCat

My human pet “Baldie” brought home another cat.

    GROAN

But you know, I kind of like her.

    MANXIE

I’m going to teach all the cool tricks. Right now she never misses the Litter Box.

    SAD.

  • ChrisH

Speaking of cats, I hope Emily will be at the prom. She and Daphne actually seem to get along, how intriguing! πŸ˜‰

  • ChrisH

@SalemCat, that’s OK, you’ve got nine lives, right? πŸ˜‰ Maybe she’ll show up some other time. I hope so. (Back by popular demand.) πŸ˜‰

  • She will definitely need that dress!

  • ChrisH

@Salem Cat, you’re welcome. I’m in my ninth life too (or I would be if I were a cat.) πŸ˜‰

  • Frank Harr

Daphne doesn’t manage many battles, does she?

  • Klorix

Thank you for using the correct wording in “couldn’t care less”! (No sarcasm intended.)
