  • Wyvern

Wow, I did not… *see* that coming!

  • Sabre

Well. This just took a dark, yet not surprising, turn.

    • ElectricGecko

One will never be surprised if one never fails to expect the worst from Daphne.

      • Jay

That’s pretty low even by Daphne’s standards.

        • pat

Seriously, to Hannah Tyler sounds like a nice guy. And what she heard from her friends probably iced the deal as well.

Isn’t it, if a girl moves on a guy who seems to be someone else’s guy, no matter the handicap, the claws come out. It’s just that the blindness is going to give Daphne a disadvantage because Hannah can literally not see it coming. Thus requiring Hannah to fire the opening salvo in order for Daphne to come out of this smelling like a rose wroth her dignity intact.

          • ElectricGecko

I don’t think there are any laws in these disputes. It’s a Wild West of high school conflict.

          • pat

The laws of women who have associated with a male for over a year, gecko. Ask the wife, she had the paperwork ready for you after three months.

        • ElectricGecko

Shows how much you know! Daphne HAS NO STANDARDS!!!

  • Bill Peschel

    Cue sad trombone music

  • SalemCat

At any time is Phoebe going to actually regret assisting Daffy in her vile revenge plan ?

I think Panel Four reveals the answer.

  • Brother Parvus

Phoebe needs to whip out a magical clue-stick[0 wherewith to pummel some sense into Daffy. Daffy’s best bet would be to befriend Hanna.

[0] like a bataka bat, natch.

  • Phoebe’s probably afraid a facepalm will ruin her makeup.

  • DLKmusic

I did not see this coming.

and I have to keep asking myself… WHY did I not see this coming?

  • I don’t recall Phoebe becoming cross, but she is well entitled to slip a bit and ask just precisely when Daphne was going to disclose this crucial information. It’s not a matter of inappropriate pity for the blind girl – on the evidence she’s fairly all right – but rather strategy: how was Phoebe ever supposed to craft a dress that would make Hannah jealous?

  • She could still be the source of all evil.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, it’s certainly not Satan in this universe.

      • Peya Luna

exactly! just because someone is handicapped and looking harmless, doesn´t mean they *are* harmless. heck, as a blind person she is even allowed to carry a stick, aka a potential weapon, at all times!

seriously though, not all disabled people are automatically nice. i´ve met plenty of bitter a#holes pissed at the world and everyone not or just less handicapped as them.

      • Commander Clash

That being said Satan would probably be awfully proud of his little girl having her hand in something so “evil” as trying to steal a guy away from a blind girl.

    • Sigurther

I was gonna suggest something similar. Just because she’s differently abled doesnt mean she’s the sweetest thing since honey at sunrise. She might still be one of the ‘mean girls’. I doubt he’d be dating her if she was, tho, he’s a decent guy and the popular girls don’t typically date outside their clique level.

  • Kurmudgeon

Is Daphne just pissed off at the world, and making a point of letting everyone know it? That is so … high school.

  • maarvarq

Daphne’s evil shocks the daughter of Satan!

  • Thisguy

Didn’t really see it coming, but not surprised.
I always saw this whole Hannah thing as largely being in Daphne’s head.
The real problem always was her relationship problems with Tyler. Namely that she doesn’t want to change the relationship (which is fine), and that he wants an actual serious relationship (which is also fine). Problem Daphne has is that she can’t accept that because she doesn’t want to change the relationship, Tyler has to seek one elsewhere.

    • ElectricGecko

The truth is even more complicated, as we’ll find out. But really, Daphne and Tyler are friends. They’re cool with being friends. They both sort of want to be something more, but aren’t sure of that, and they don’t want to ruin what they’ve got. We’ll see how Hannah fits into all of this soon.

      • One of my biggest regrets from then; I was afraid of being rejected by a girl I was friends with, so I never asked, only to find out years later, when she was married with children, I might add, that she felt the same and would have said yes.

And that is why I’m willing to take risks today. Better to get a firm “no” than to wonder for years if I ever had a shot.

        • ElectricGecko

Well, good policy to live by. Though I have to admit that some of the most cringe-worthy memories I have are of asking girls out and getting turned down. Like, just thinking about those moments makes me physically feel awful. So … I definitely did not live my life by that policy.

  • I’d wondered whether it’d turn out that Hannah Van Beek was actually a kind girl who went with Taylor as a favour to a classmate.
Jury is still out, I know.

Now I’m wondering whether Phoebe and Puck will smack Daphne upside the head for wanting to pick a fight with a blind girl.

At the very least, I expect Phoebe to be miffed that she wasn’t informed Hannah is blind; so many of the changes she wrought in Daphne’s appearance are visual, they never bothered to go perfume shopping that I recall…

  • Jesse

Just… just abort, Daph. There is no honor in this victory, and victory is a distant possibility, anyway.

  • Pantera

Daph, this is COLD even for you, miss. Abort, Abort, Abort… Either, tell Ty you care, or forget it. sigh…

    • ElectricGecko

Oh, come on! It’s easy to win against a blind girl! All you need to do is be really quiet! The battle is almost won, Daphne! GO! GO! GO!

      • Peya Luna

you never heard of daredevil, did you? they have bat ears, i tell you!
there´s actually a pretty good thriller with such a topic: wait until dark. basically a bunch of thugs want to kill a ‘helpless’ little lady, but she realises whats going on, smashes all the lights and turns the table. guess who is dead in the end 😉

    • Pantera

Even if Tyler does EVER forgive Daphne for this night, I fear that whatever comes of this will be a very rough lesson for her. I foresee pain and misery in her future, even if it isn’t hers.

  • Kaiser

I like how Daphne goes from “Hey, this isn’t too bad” to “Oh dear God, what the hell have I done?” over the span of… I want to say, like 6 seconds? I dunno. However long it takes for Phoebe to finish that sentence.

That said, I am now curious if there’ll be a catfight (which I now doubt, despite being hinted) or she’ll just go “…Screw this” and go home.
I can see either of those happening OR that she’ll tell Tyler she wants to go with him, causing them to do so while she dances with someone else.
I may or may not read into this way too much.
…I am, however, highly amused at the fact that no matter what happens next, I’ll probably have a huge grin on my face.
Mostly from telling my girlfriend I was right about her being blind (we made a bet about that some time ago; she thought she was going to be obese, I figured she was blind).

  • James W McCleary

    I’m still on Daphne’s side.

  • Helio A Andrade

    Oh
Well,Daphne was never the best person around,so i dunno why i thought that Hannah was a generic blonde(Oh wait,Tracee & Heather)
By the way,WOW,you really made Daph into the puppy kicker, dude!

  • JJR

I want to know why didn’t Colin say anything about her being blind.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, Colin might not know her. As a teacher, I can safely say that I know about one third to one quarter of any grade level. Maybe less, depending on the grade. So Colin might not have been able to put a face to the name.

      • wavewright62

We love Colin to bits, but he does have a tendency to lalala ican’thearyou at home, as a survival strategy. Plus, wasn’t he still worried about the cancer surgery right around the time this started up?

        • ElectricGecko

All this was after the cancer stuff, but yes, Colin isn’t always the most engaged of fellows. Not sure he really knew what was going on with this whole thing.

  • sigpig

I like how you made Tyler look both cool and uncomfortable wearing a suit at the same time.

  • demarion

Okaaaaaaaaay, Hannah may still turn out to be deserving of Daphne’s scorn, an infirmity/handicap/differently abled does not confer a good personality . . . . buuuuuuuuuut I’m not betting against that. The worst (best) I can come up with is that Hannah will be gracious, charming, personable, a delight to be around . . . y’know, because she’s just that evil, sucking people in before striking, which she will do any day now . . . yep, gonna happen soon . . . any time now . . . it’s coming . . . she’s just biding her time . . . wait for it . . . keep waiting . . . a little longer . . .

  • DMC_Run

Based on the 2nd panel, I’m assuming that Tyler brought his mom, & Hannah brought both her parents … ?

    • ElectricGecko

Uh, no. No relation. You can’t see the entire group because of my annoyingly narrow panels, but there are three girls and three guys in the group as seen in panel one.

    • SalemCat

I am sure glad to hear that bringing your folks to the Prom is not some Canadian Tradition.

      Yukk !

  • Marduk

I hope Daphne fails to win Tyler over. I’d love to have him continue dating The Blind Bandit. Any chance this means The Boulder is also chaperoning this prom?

  • SalemCat

Unless Tyler and Daffy reconcile, it would seem he will be out of PUCK, never to be seen again.

Which is ok with me ! Daffy should be friendless.

And that would free up some future panels for more TRACEEE and EMILEEE.

    WHOOPEEE !

  • ChrisH

IMHO, the “tiny blind girl” isn’t good-looking enough to compete with Daphne. (If I sound shallow, well, it’s still so.)

  • Brian Tumbleston

Right here’s my two cents. I’d like to buck the normal trend and it turns out that, despite being blind, Hannah is still a jerk. She uses the fact that she is blind to gain sympathy. Therefore Daphne is completely justified in her actions. PS: I like Daphne. Screw the haters.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, we’ll see. Things may be exactly as they seem, or not.

    • Kat

While that’s valid, since being blind does not mean she is also a saint, I would like to point out that even though Hannah is Tyler’s second choice, she was a choice. In the words of Jack Sparrow
Other: “You are the worst pirate captain I have ever heard of!”
Jack: “But you have heard of me.”

    • SalemCat

      @Brian Tumbleston

So being BLIND gains sympathy ?

It’s awfully tempting, but I’ll pass.

      RRRRUP (That’s a negative PURRR)

      😛

    • Buggle

From that point of view, I fail to see why Tyler would be Hannah’s first choice of partner… If she were that manipulative, surely she could do better?

  • Lrdofh8

What no one has mentioned, so I feel I must is Tyler’s impeccable sense of style. Quite dapper!

  • Donald MacDonald

I was sortof wondering if this whole thing would blow up in Daphne’s face. Tyler seems to be a pretty decent guy, slthough with teenage boys you can never be certain of that; so Daphne’s behaviour might drive a wedge between them. He could well see a side of her tonight he doesn’t really care for.

    • ElectricGecko

I think many people were waiting for this to blow up in Daphne’s face, honestly. And they won’t be fully disappointed.

  • Chris47t

If Daphne’s smart, she’ll try to use her sexy dress to seduce Tyler away from Hannah. Not only will she feel better about herself, she may mollify Phoebe, who will decide all the trouble she went to, to create and make it, wasn’t a total wasted effort after all.

  • ChrisH

Lrdofh8, Yes, he is well-dressed, and by coincidence, his outfit is very color-coordinated with Daphne’s. 🙂

  • SalemCat

Perhaps Daffy will be embarrassed, so despondent, that she will run away, never to be seen again ?

Please Please Please Please Please Please Please

  • LaughingDemon

Oh no.. It’s one thing to not be able to look away from a train wreck. But this is like seeing the tanker truck stalling on the tracks, and my eyes will not blink.

  • ChrisH

@EG, thanks, I’ve had to train myself to be observant. I’ve made it one of my habits. :). I could also point out that light ties with a dark suit used to be gangster style attire, like Al Capone, who of course was famous in the twenties, as well as the flappers.

    • ElectricGecko

Well honestly, I just hit on these combos out of vague randomness. Like I need Tyler’s outfit to be a little different, and I throw some various colors down until I like what works. Sometimes that result ties into other things. Sometimes not. No mob association intended, but now that you mention it, I do see it.

  • Dark Waffle

    Let’s get ready to RUMBL… Oh… Damn…

  • Chris47t

I think Tyler is probably a nice guy, but it’s fun to see characters dressed against character. (For example, Daphne as an angel would be funny.)
    🙂

  • Buggle

    Insecure much, Daph?

  • Buggle

Also, I’m still on Daphne’s side, but not because I necessarily think she’s in the right here – I think that just because Hannah is disabled doesn’t mean Phoebe and by extension Daph should automatically pity her for a perceived “weakness” and pull back. She deserves to have their respect, and that means treating her with the same courtesy they would an abled person – namely, in this case, by showing her up at the prom. Her blindness has nothing to do with whatever beef she and Daphne have, and Phoebes shouldn’t bring it into the equation when it doesn’t belong.

  • Frank Harr

“But really, is it any surprise that we’ve been on the villain’s side this whole time?”

Speak for yourself. Hannah could still turn nasty.

However, I always figured that Hannah was likely very nice (it’s funnier that way). Regardless of that, as much as I love Daphne, she’s not in the right here. I don’t know if Tyler is. Hannah’s just stuck in the middle.

NOT A CRITICISM! Reasonable people make for bad stories. Irrational people make for great stories. You do you Daph!

  • Phoebe: “I did not anticipate this challenge! How to prove you look the hottest in your prom dress to a girl who literally can’t see what you’re wearing? Could we have made a Braille dress? OH! I got it! We need to, by some wacky hijinks circumstance, arrange for her to trip, fall and grab your bewbs to keep from stumbling. Oh, but we need to check that– yes! I do believe you’re ‘winning’ against her by that particular measurement! We can do this!”
Puck: “Phoebe… on top of everything else wrong with that plan, it involves you deliberately tripping a blind girl!
Phoebe: “Oh drat! You’re right! We need a new plan!”
Daphne: “No we don’t; this one’s perfect! Come on, Phoebe, make your daddy proud of you!”
Phoebe: “I’ve done literally the opposite of that my entire life!”
Daphne: “Dammit! This comment section dialogue needs a good punchline!”
Puck: “Can’t. Hinoron’s already 16 minutes late to leave for work.”

    • Frank H.

      Did you make it?

      • Weeeell, not on time, but fortunately in time!

…And if that makes no sense to you, I’m a PSW; I help look after old men in wheelchairs in their own homes. Old men with poor bladder control and unsteady hands who need someone who can not only undo their pants, but steadily hold a urinary bottle for them to pee into.
Take a moment to consider the likely consequences of my being very significantly late. When I DO eventually wander in, a change of clothes may be required. >_<

    • ElectricGecko

You go above and beyond. Truly.
