Puck 556

Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Daphne Puck Tyler (aka Taylor)Tags: forbidden rebel video game
THE BONUS STORY ARC COMIC CONTINUES! PAGE 8 IS LIVE! After two years of what the movie folks call 'development hell', the Car Wash bonus comic is ready for release! I initially planned this thing to be a print-only comic that would conclude Puck Volume 2, but then Puck Volume Two never really happened due to low (to no) demand, so now I'm putting it as a voting incentive! Yay! Every week will bring a new page, and new pages will be dropping all summer, so please... VOTE TO WASH THAT CAR REAL GOOD!

  • Aw, it’s got a happy ending!!!

The sweet is all the sweeter for the preceding sour.
    ===
The facial expressions are also delightful. Is this the first time Puck pitched Ty a straight line? He sure slammed it out of the park! Meanwhile Daph’s three expressions flip through three emotions that set the scene: happy-gameplayer, sullen-teenager, amused/proud-girlfriend.

I am curious, but I don’t think that I would have ever pegged Daphne to have ever admitted that Weird Al would have existed. Our is that a gift from Tyler/Taylor?

  • SalemCat

    “SPATULA CITY” ???

Are we certain Daffy knows what a SPATULA even is ?

And here I was betting she has never opened a can of chili, or even used a microwave.

She is totally “Mom, can you make me a baloney sammich, and cut off the crust ?”

She is a disgrace to her bloodthirsty feral forebears.

Tho something also tells me Robin’s concept of “Cooking” is to toss a Bag of Cheetos at each family member, with a hearty “Go for it”.

  • Does Daphne have a job at Spatula City now? Or does she just wear the shirt with pride?

  • Mark N

Spatula City. Weird Al Yankovic loves telling people anbout that place.

    • Mark N

      Yes I’m old.

      • Animeswords

Not old … Well seasoned …

        Not old … experienced … Worldly …

Not old … Well traveled …

Eh … who am I kidding … I’m old … and I look forward to yelling at the youngins “GET OF MY LAWN!!!”

      • LaughingDemon

I knew that reference and I’m not that old. I just dig into random stuff. (Seriously, I played Doom 2 as a kid with a UHF.wad that added sound effects from the movie and I didn’t know about the movie until my teens). “Lemme get one thing straight: Guns don’t kill people- I do”.

      • ElectricGecko

Well, we’re all old here. You’re with your peers.

  • Thisguy

I love the pic of young Daphne in the background.
The difference now, is that they might devolve into playing strip Mario or whatever.

  • LaughingDemon

Aww. Young love and teenage defiance. Often intertwined and indivisible. As GTA5’s rising industrialist Trevor Philips put it: “It’s a recipe for disaster – that’s why it’s so perfect!”
    Also props on the incentive.

  • Peya Luna

i´d love to see tylers mom try to retrieve her rebel son – and run into puck! the resulting screaming match should be EPIC

    • ElectricGecko

I think such a run-in might happen eventually. Though something tells me they have a lot in common and might actually get along…

    Re: the voting incentive comic

Is that the first time we’ve seen precisely where Pheobe’s tail is attached? Yes, that’s the first thing I noticed if anyone is wondering.

    • ElectricGecko

No, technically THIS was the first time we saw precisely where Phoebe’s tail is attached. It extends out the back (technically the top) of the lower sacrum. Which is not at all where the tailbone is in real life, and I I really don’t want to consider what the bone structure would look like, because it would be weird.

I recently saw a Corridor Crew video where they were looking at the CGI genie from the recent ‘Aladdin’ remake and they noted that the FX artists smartly emulated the look of a person wearing blue makeup, not an actual blue person. We aren’t used to seeing actual blue people, so the result would look weird. But real people in blue makeup we’ve seen, and that looks less weird. So it is with Phoebe’s tail. I place it precisely where a fake ‘devil’s tail’ goes on a standard Halloween costume. It makes zero sense from a biological standpoint, but it looks ‘right’. I think.

And for what it’s worth, I think it’s aesthetically pleasing.

  • maarvarq

Does Puck have a new hairstyle, or is she just sporting a ponytail? She has a rather flapper look here, in a god way.

  • mermaidan

Mama, take me to the Car Wash where the pretty devil lady works, PLEASE!

  • Tio Willie

Great comic! I knew that boy had a devious streak in him! As for the car wash…mind officially blown. No way those two ladies should be allowed to be in the same comic together, both wearing bikini’s! That’s gotta be illegal someplace.

  • Just Sumguy

Someone better call George Thorogood and The Destroyers because if this keeps up Tyler’s gonna be “Bad To The Bone”.

  • sigpig

Tyler’s getting an eye-full at that car wash…
    Also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00rP_mlZYx0

  • JJR

I wonder was Puck expected them to be making out on the couch?

  • pwbritt

Daphne looks incredible cute in the last panel. Just the right mixture of sweetness and smugness.

    • ElectricGecko

Thanks. She’s a hard one to emote with. As a surly teen, she holds back a lot and most positive energy is kind of muffled. But sweet and smug is basically exactly what I was going for.

  • Frank Harr

    Well, DAPH’S into it.

  • ChrisH

    Tyler’s Mom is right! He’s becoming a vegetable . 😉

  • SalemCat

    @EG

We all know of words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and mean different things.

But here is a word that is both a noun and a verb. And it means the same thing whether used as a noun or a verb. Now, that is not so unusual. But what is unusual, is it is pronounced differently depending on whether it is being used a noun or a verb.

    ABUSE

Try saying it: “My car suffered abuse.” “I abuse my car.”

Are there any other words like that ?

    • ElectricGecko

Probably? Ooh, here’s one: mobile. In America, it has three pronunciations. Moe-BEEL is the place, moe-BYLE is the thing over a crib and MOE-bll is the adjective.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

That’s preeetty good, but I’m looking for words that are spelled (spelt?) the same, and mean the same, but are pronounced differently depending on their lexicon.

I think “abuse” may be unique.

As an aside, I find it abominable that “Irregardless” has been admitted to Webster’s Dictionary.

I also become irked every time “Sentience” or “Sentient” is pronounced as a three-syllable world. (Most often heard in a bad Sci-Fi video. As in, “I think that donut is sentient”)

Let alone fools who pronounce “mischievous” as a four-syllable world.

        Grrrrrrrrrrr

        • ElectricGecko

Enh, I’m less picky. Language changes. Meaning shifts. There are numerous words that once meant the opposite of their current meaning (or something very different). Lots of words that have shifted their pronunciation. Lots of regionalisms that are just that: not bad, just different.

I crusade for the easygoing English teachers who teach standard English and note the deviations but don’t judge. It’s an inherently absurd language. I’m not going to pretend it’s sacred.

        • ElectricGecko

I came up with one that kinda works: mouse. In most regions, the animal is pronounced “Maous” but the act of hunting or killing them is pronounced “maouz”. From what I can tell, though, this isn’t consistent across all English speakers.

      • SalemCat

        @EG

        So is it a “moe-BYLE” or “MOE-bill” phone ?

        GOING MOBILE – BEEP BEEP

  • SalemCat

It hasn’t hit 100° F here in Salem yet.

That’s another nice thing about Canada.

    It may be 100° F, but only 38° C.

    Brrrrrrr……

  • Buggle

Please tell me Daphne’s hair isn’t going to stay like that….

Also, this is apropos of nothing, but the other night I dreamed that Tracee gave birth to a jelly donut. Somehow, this was both perfectly expected and natural to both her and Satan.

    • ElectricGecko

You prefer the old hair? It may go back. Though it’s way easier to draw like this.

And … jelly donut birth. I have no words. No words at all. Other than to say that if you looked it up,
I’m sure some comic has already done that.

  • Tyler: “Somehow, the more firmly I rebel, the sexier it is! I’m pretty turned on right now, Daphne!”
Daphne: “Ah, so what you’re saying, in essence, is that your MOTHER has given you this erection?”
    Tyler: “………………………….bitch.”
Daphne: “I figure I have the nose and ears, so I may as well lean into it.”

  • ChrisH

@EG, how about USE ? As a noun it’s pronounced with an “s” sound but when it’s a verb, with a “z” sound instead.

  • SalemCat

    @Chris

And it makes sense because “Use” is a component of “Abuse”.

So I guess “Misuse” makes three.

But all three are really derived from “Use”.

PUCK – the Web Comic for English Teachers

    • ElectricGecko

If it were the webcomic for English teachers, it wouldn’t regularly release comics that have glaring typos in them. I always fix them an hour or two later, but still.

  • ChrisH

    @SalemCat, ain’t it the truth! 😉

    • SalemCat

Although Scriptio continua would save having to learn punctuation.

PUCK – the Web Comic for Fans of Language Trivia

(Fun Fact: I its earliest days, EG toyed with the concept of introducing a different Olde English word with each new strip)

And isn’t it about time Phoebe say “FUNK” again ? It was her catch phrase !

Along with you-know-who and her famous “ALOHA”.

  • Miles

You know what? F’-k’n A Tyler. You go.
A;so, your level of “goodness” probably has a positive influence on one Daphne, so sometimes oarental figures should be ignored.
I mean, not often, but just… every now and then.

Admittedly, that has never worked out quite right for me, but hey, it never worked out so poorly that I destroyed potential futures for myself (I’M PRETTY SURE).

    • ElectricGecko

Parents don’t know everything. Granted, they know SOME things, and shouldn’t be completely discounted, but sometimes you just gotta do the Dew. As it were.

  • Jodin

I like Daphne’s expression here. Her amusement is obvious, and even though there is no thought bubble I can imagine she is thinking “You’re such a dork.”
