Puck 560

Chapter: Junior PromCharacters: Colin Miranda PuckTags: language little boy transform
THE BONUS STORY ARC COMIC CONTINUES! PAGE 11 IS LIVE! After two years of what the movie folks call 'development hell', the Car Wash bonus comic is ready for release! I initially planned this thing to be a print-only comic that would conclude Puck Volume Two, but then Puck Volume Two never really happened due to low (to no) demand, so now I'm putting it as a voting incentive! Yay! Every week will bring a new page, and new pages will be dropping all summer, so please... VOTE TO WASH THAT CAR REAL GOOD! As for this comic... Hey look, it's that rarest of things: a stand-alone joke comic! That means that we're in the crazy no-man's land between story arcs. Won't last long. This comic is one of those 'art imitates life' things. This exchange is pretty much a verbatim exchange my wife had with a mother and her child one day. And while my wife did have a little boy of her own, she was more familiar with the distinct sounds of transforming through me. Hasbro, by the way, would not be happy with this comic because it uses the word 'transform' as a verb. Apparently once your brand name starts being used as a verb (as in, "let me Google that,") it becomes very hard to defend the trademark in an American court of law, so they twist themselves silly trying to avoid the word used as a verb. They always prefer the word 'convert'. Which is dumb, but whatever. "Cheeka chooka chaka khee" is not the sound of converting. And it never will be. It's the sound of transforming...

    Toxic Cleaner is a flavor?

  • Thisguy

Ummm. Transform IS a verb. It’s used for lots of things in common language. Serves them right for naming their product after a common verb. They should have picked a word with no meaning, like Zangchimer. Then electrical engineers wouldn’t get annoyed because they think a conversation is about the electrical transformers, only to find out it’s about robots.
Anyway random mum would probably not be surprised by this, and probably has a husband who exisiting childlike behaviour at times as well.

  • Drakkenmensch

“AUTOBOTS… TRANSFO- wait no, it’ll be better for trademark purposes if we convert instead.”

“Prime, you used to be cool.”

  • SalemCat

What a great time of year !

The temperatures are mellowing, and Halloween Decor is appearing in the stores.

My human pet, Baldie, and I both are psyched.

It is almost time for his new SIX FOOT DRAGON to crack its egg and wreak havoc on anything with half a meter of its insufferable soul !

    • Wyvern

“Without fog machine” demands explanation. Like, is there a version of it that comes *with* a fog machine? And why would they advertise “animated mouth release fog” if the fog machine is not included?

      • ElectricGecko

I smell a scam. This ad looks too much to me like those old ads from silver age comics: “GIANT SIX FOOT TALL MONSTER! YOU control him! Responds to YOUR COMMANDS! BREATHES FIRE AND SHOOTS LIGHTNING! TERRIFY your FRIENDS!” Though I recently found out through one of my favorite Youtubers, Laura Legends, that the ads in those old comics that promised “Get a REAL LIVE MONKEY!” actually mailed kids a real live Capuchin monkey through the US Postal system. The monkeys would freak out, throw poo, injure kids and get into all sorts of trouble. The 1950’s were INSANE.

        • The Lurker

It is from Imgur, so of course it is a scam; and for we children of the sixties, remember the magic sets with real flame making magic? And the chemistry sets with the little bottles of H2SO4? That was cool!

          • ElectricGecko

I only ever saw those ads after the fact, reading old comics in the 80s, and the ads always filled me with curiosity. I was so happy when I started seeing videos that explained how they sent you a ā€˜real tank’. Honestly, that cardboard tank looked pretty dang cool.

          • SalemCat

            @The Lurker

            What is H2O4 ?

            DRINKING !

            Get it ?

            Heh Heh Heh Heh….

            A comic gem.

            Freddy was a chemist.
            Freddy ain’t no more.
            What Freddy thought was H2O.
            Was H2SO4.

By the way H2SO4 is sulfuric acid (the closest thing we know to a universal solvent)

          • ElectricGecko

Doesn’t dissolve gold. You need regal water – a mix of hydrochloric and nitric acids – to do that. But sulphuric acid is definitely a good solvent for your throat.

          • Pat

            Water is the universal solvent.

          • Pat

Yeah, Aqua Regia. Sulfuric, nitric and a touch of something else.

          • ElectricGecko

            Third ingredient: magic!

        • SalemCat

          @EG

Oh, the Dragon is real, alright.

Home Depot offerred it with a Smoke Machine in 2018, but decided in 2019 to make the Fog Machine optional – only accountants know why.

Baldie dragged the Dragon down the driveway with his left arm only, as his right arm was awaiting Rotator Cuff Surgery.

Now, of course, Baldie is “‘armless”. Bad pun.

Seriously, tho, the 100 lb box has air holes for the Dragon to breathe, and we hear snoring – often.

I just pray it’s not pissed when we finally open the box up – and poke it to awaken.
Of course he damaged his Left Arm doing so.

I have already named it Fred.

I just pray Fred is not pissed when we finally open the box up – and poke him with a sharp stick to awaken.

I was thinking that any girl nerd worth her Jpop cred should have an inkling of that. But I don’t think that they’d be mothers… grand mothers?

    • ElectricGecko

The bulk of the new form girl nerds didn’t come into existence until more recently. The ones I know are all millennials or younger.

      • sigpig

“Gerds” (Girl Nerds), in this generation, seem to have originated with the Power Puff Girls and Sailor Moon, IMHO. Then, they discovered this thing called “video gaming”…

        • ElectricGecko

Yeah, that time frame makes sense. I can attest that there were none when I was in high school, right before those properties. I mean, there were uncool girls, girls who got straight As and loved literature and such, but not the nerd culture girls I see everywhere in high school today.

          • SalemCat

            @EG

Baldie had a nerd girlfriend once. Joyce. Nice name.

She was tall (tho not as tall as he), slim, pretty, very smart.

He was disappointed her BEWBS were not large.

            IMBECILE.

I’m betting in another three years she would have been been a supermodel.

Excuse me while I digress and scratch him untll he awakens.

  • Looks like the banana logo is wearing protection.

  • T'Renn

I assume that not letting the public verb your trademark only applies when you made up the trademarked noun. Objecting to people “googling” or “photoshopping” would devalue the trademark. But with “transformer,” the lawyers’ job would be SIMPLER, since they only need to worry about the noun uses.

    Doesn’t mean a lawyer won’t get carried away, but…

    • ElectricGecko

Thus far, there’s been no ruling that has manifested Hasbro’s fears. But I suppose they are worried that every transforming robot toy will start calling themselves ‘Transformers’ because, well, they transform, don’t they? It’s an accurate trademark-proof description. And they’d kinda be right. But I think Hasbro is a bit too worried about it. Like, let people use the dang word as a verb.

  • Hm…. voting incentive hints at Puck’s little boy’s best nerd relationship is about to … transform?

Or is it just a coincidence in timing.

    • ElectricGecko

Well, there is definitely a resonant connection because in the voting incentive, Colin is watching an episode of Super God Masterforce. Which yes, is a Japanese-only Transformers show.

  • mermaidan

Based on her expression, Miranda may want to start walking really soon.

  • RoyanRannedos

We all know we can transform back into boys at any time.

  • sigpig

    1. I was thinking “Transfo#$%^ or Ewok” when I was translating that speech.
    2. Has Puck learned about gravity-defying clothing from Phoebe? Every person I have seen wearing a kilt has to seriously be careful about NOT flashing the entire world.
    3. My TWC voting verification question picture was Phoebe. Any coincidence?
    4. By the colouring, it looks like they are shopping at that “Basic” Food store. We are lucky up here – our Basic Food store has to compete with all the other regular stores nearby with better quality food at the lower prices. It certainly is the store to go to when you need to stock up for the apocalypse in terms of canned goods, dry goods, and sanitation products.

    • ElectricGecko

      1) Good eye.
      2) Clothing in general just may not follow physics in this comic. That’s just a thing. A dumb thing.
      3) I uploaded that pic about a thousand years ago. Can’t believe it’s still in circulation.
      4) This is ā€˜El Cheapo’, which is an off-brand take on that Basics store. Though maybe more like No Frills? They’re functionally the same. Though I don’t shop at either because I’m stupid, lazy, and good at wasting money.

  • Frank Harr

I don’t think I’d ever be that cool.

    Paid?! AHHHHHH!

  • pattoo1234

Can you please add that little boy and his mother to the characters page and make them recurring characters? I like them already!

  • Sigurther

It occurs to me that I have never heard the transforming sound spelled out, nor considered how it may be spelled myself. I guess that’s as good an interpretation as any.

    *kooh kah ker kah cheet*
    *cheee kah ker kah koh*

There’s a lot more phlegm sound than the K really conveys, but that’s as close as I know to get. XD

  • Just Sumguy

Sometimes you’ve just gotta love Colin. He grew up, married a single mother, and had a kid, stayed sober, but never let the child in him languish and die through it all.

  • ChrisH

I hope Colin never changes! šŸ™‚
