Puck 575

Chapter: Jinkies!Characters: Colin Phoebe Puck Tyler (aka Taylor)Tags: apple pie fred orange scooby-doo shaggy
IT'S THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST! Take a trip down memory lane as we revisit some voting incentives from previous Decembers. I DO have a new voting incentive in the pipeline for this December, and it's a doozy, but it'll take me a few more weeks to put the finishing touches on it. It will be ready for Christmas, though. Until then, I thought we could go for some reruns. VOTE FOR NUTMEG!!! As for this comic... We can gather from everyone's outfits that we're still on the same day that Colin proposed the Scooby-Doo cosplay experience. Which means that Phoebe either procured a Fred outfit for Tyler in a matter of hours or she just had one lying around. And honestly, either option seems entirely plausible.

YAAAAAAAA! All of us called Tylor for Fred have been vindicated!

    What have we wrought? 😀

  • SalemCat

    Harumph.

    re: Voting Incentive

#1 Not everyone even wants to be an Elf.

#2 Robin was BORN an Elf. Unfair advantage.

#3 I prefer TRACEEE as a non-elf. Rather, a Fox, thank you very much.

    • ElectricGecko

Puck is a fairy, not an elf. Though the terminology is muddy, honestly.

      • Echo

        *faery

Fairy implies pixie, faery or faerie covers the broad range. I believe that Puck was supposed to be a pooka.
Of course, it’s your comic, so I do suppose whatever term you deem correct is. And I assume you took your inspiration from Shakespeare, and I don’t remember what terminology he used. I preformed A Midsummer Night’s Dream last year, but after I accidentally cut half of Titania’s monologue when reciting it, I purged that from my memory.

But elf falls under the category as faery. So do boggarts, brownies, buggars, and a broad variety of other odd immortal friends who may or may not intend to murder you, though, so elf is a much more specific term.

        • ElectricGecko

All valid. Shakespeare used ‘fairy’ to refer Puck, but also used the term ‘goblin’ and ‘spirit’ and a few others I’m likely forgetting.

Also, I have no idea what is correct, even if it’s my comic. I will readily admit that.

Just started watching “Christmas Chronicles II”.

Refreshing to see both “Belsnickel” (a version of Krampus), and The Yule Cat !!! as characters.

Spoke to my mom (Jólakötturinn) about it. She muttered (a very bad sign) something to the effect that if the Residuals Check does not arrive soon, Kurt Russell and Goldie Dawn had better avoid snowdrifts this Winter.

          • It’s the pointed ears. They lead to so many assumptions.

        • HKMaly

The term is definitely fuzzy and was changing through time. For example, elves started big, then went small, then big again with Tolkien.

However, I though the “generic” term is Fae. Faerie specifically is the whole land of Fae.

Also, until Puck shows she can shapeshift, I refuse to believe she’s pooka.

          • Typeminer

None went bigger than Elves Presley. 🙂

            *Elfs self out the door*

          • ElectricGecko

            Perfect groan.

          • Echo

I’m not sure you’ll actually see this since it took me four days to get to you, but faerie, fae, and fey (I hate that one, but it’s an acceptable anglicization, I guess) are used interchangeably for the most part when it comes to talking about faeries. You do normally see Faerie used to talk about the land of the fae, if you’re not going to add in the “land of” bit or use something like Tír na Nóg.

As for elves, I’d say that a lot of the forms of them you see nowadays look more like dioane sidhe to me, but then again, old beliefs are difficult to trace down exactly. I mean, look at Hades and Persephone. The original belief was that Persephone chose to go into the underworld herself and Hades was like, “Oh, okay. You can definitely do that.” And Demeter was like, “Heck to the no, child.” But the popular belief today is that Persephone was kidnapped.

As for the shapeshifting thing, yeah, that’s fair. I’ve just seen so many people slap him (him as in our typical, male Puck) into the pooka category that I’ve just been going with that.

        • Brother Parvus

Puck ar buaile is i, ceart go leor.

  • I’m a little surprised he makes a good Fred.

(I’m also a little surprised that it’s Puck who does the laundry. Should’a mentioned that last week.)

  • Pat

But I voted for Star Anise. I demand a re-pie!

  • Pat

And I like that Candy Cane wallpaper.

  • Miles

As someone who has had all natural apple pie (i.e. apples picked from trees in the yard, I guess granulated sugar, so maybe not quite all natural), mill ground flour, chicken laid eggs, milk from cows and such… I imagine a single orange might add a bit of exotic flavor to the batch.
Yes, I lived on a farm in Maine in my early childhood, oranges were a rare imported treat, it might be good, and now I have to try and make one given the ingredients available in New Mexico and see how it turns out, and also I don’t have my grandmother’s recipe to help, so thanks for the challenge.
Both 8Þ but also =D to just see what happens.

    • ElectricGecko

I don’t think it would improve an apple pie much. Honestly, you improve an apple pie by replacing it with a better type of pie. Now don’t get me wrong: I’m fine with apple pie. And yes, I am familiar with real apple pie, homemade, from local apples. I used to grow my own apples, as a matter of fact. And still, I’ll readily admit that I prefer most other types of pie. Gooseberry, in particular, is an apple-esque equivalent that I far prefer.

    • I have a neighbor with a green apple tree; they let me have all the fruit which spares them the effort of composting (like most of my neighbors they pay for the city to haul away their yard waste. Strange!)
The fruit is too tart to eat raw, but when I cook the apples into applesauce, it makes a tasty applesauce pie. I also free some so that in the dark of winter I’ll bake some and have the smell of summer or autumn in the kitchen.

  • Sigurther

    That actually works out spectacularly.

  • aaron Smith

if he got rid of the beard hed have some say in it lolwith that beard.. no way can he be fred lol

  • Mako

In addition to looking almost exactly like Shaggy, Colin also acts like Shaggy, thinks like Shaggy, and basically is Shaggy in slightly geekier, form, but I guess realizing you’re the comic-relief stoner is a hard pill to swallow.

  • RoyanRannedos

Wouldn’t surprise me if the next Scooby reboot has a Black Fred.

    • ElectricGecko

Wouldn’t surprise me either. They’ve done Asian Velma before.

    • SalemCat

      @RoyanRannedos

We all support diversity. But it can become laughable.

Years ago, when “Home Alone” was new, a local organization had a Macaulay Culkin “Look-alike” contest.

Friends had a child, who was the right age, and a dead ringer.

The winner was a very cute, African-American boy.

      • HKMaly

Yeeeaaah … casting a black actor for Heimdall, who is called the whitest of the (Norse) gods, was already bad. It will be worse if next time they put asian and native american there …

        • You didn’t see the Hogun The Grim of the Warriors Three? He had a significant death scene at the hands (or whatever) of Hel.

Marvelverse Asgard is not Realverse Asgard, just as Marvel NYC is not Real NYC. If necessary, the writers could explain that Heimdall didn’t actually visit ancient Norway, but was merely mentioned by the Asgardians who were vacationing on our primitive planet – and earthly imagination filled in the rest.

  • Frank Harr

By the way, I’m picking a bit of wish-fulfillment up from Puck and Phoebe regarding the voting incentive. I’m sure those two had a lot of fun. 🙂

    • ElectricGecko

Who doesn’t want to be a sexy elf? Okay, I don’t.

      • HKMaly

I think I would endure being sexy elf (at least sexy MALE elf) if it would mean I can dance on graves of everyone making fun of me at school. And, like, real dancing, not some hundred-year-old-guy-with-a-cane-shuffling-around-trying-not-to-break-a-hip sort of thing.

        • ElectricGecko

I’d happily be a sexy elf, but that would require an even stricter diet and me hitting the gym even harder than I already do. At best I could manage ‘dumpy elf who thinks he’s a sexy elf’.

      • Frank Harr

Daphne, really. But those other two? They’re clearly into it.

But I was thinking more of putting Tracee and Colin’s Sister in the Bad corner.

  • ChrisH

Tyler will play Fred brilliantly, I’m sure. After all, who could be better at casting than Puck?

  • ChrisH

I like the Xmas featured scene. All-star casts are special. 🙂

  • Drakeye

i mean she isnt wrong he looks very much more shaggy.
and in that getup they both look their respective parts…

  • SalemCat

    re: Voting Incentive

TRACEEE and Heather shackled w Ball and Chain ?

    Disapprove.

    (sorry, not funny. just cruel.)

“Elf Improvement Corner” is ok otherwise)

  • Vang

Why do I get the feeling that Colin is going to shave just to prove that he’s the better Fred?

  • Mike

First-time reader, here. Took me just about a week to fully read all 575 of these.

I wanna say, first and foremost that, ElectricGecko, you’ve made one helluva comic, here, even back in the college days, this seems to just be one of those comic that you just were always able to keep interesting, and, if I could, I’d applaud for for what must be a gigantic effort to keep your comic going, especially when you added Miranda to the mix; adding a baby has been a kiss of death for most media that dare try it, but, you’ve actually managed to pull it off in a way that’s an almost perfect mix of annoying and funny.

All that said–and, I promise, I mean be as constructive about this as possible–I’m gonna have to skip this “Scooby-Doo cosplay” nonsense. This seems like a bit of a joke chapter, like “freckles” and “stickterlude” seem to have been, but, unlike those, this just seems to be a painful attempt at a group cosplay narrative. It didn’t work for me when Sailor Moon tried it, it didn’t work for me when Ersa tried it in Fairy Tail, and it doesn’t even work in real life when my friends do it.

You definitely have the talent to pull this chapter off WITHOUT the Scooby-Doo cosplay nonsense. Why it’s needed, I’ll never understand, especially since seeing Tyler in that outfit is off-putting [to me, at least].

As a result, I’m gonna have to step away from your otherwise excellent comic unless and until this chapter finishes. Not even an artist such as yourself can make SD any good. It’s just not possible [in my opinion].

Until then, be careful, stay safe, and good luck. 🙂

    • ElectricGecko

Well, to each his own. You’re right that my intention is for this to be a bit of a fun, dumb interlude and it’s partially born out of my affinity for the source material. I like Scooby-Doo. But I get that not all people do. I salute you anyway, and thank you for reading up to this point.

And I hope you return once this particular brand of nonsense is over.

  • About the latest incentive: Saint Nicolas didn’t give kids plastic toys made in China, so who could you possibly get to do that?

  • SalemCat

    Voting Incentive:

    SATAN’S WORKSHOP !

    A classic 😛

  • Just Sumguy

Phoebe’s got a point and it stabs deep. Also, the mental image of Fred/Tyler smooching up on Scooby/Daphne’s not one I expected to have today.
