Chapter: Jinkies!Characters: Colin CyTags: cosplay fred shaggy
IT'S THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST! Take a trip down memory lane as we revisit some voting incentives from previous Decembers. I DO have a new voting incentive in the pipeline for this December, and it's a doozy, but it'll take me a few more weeks to put the finishing touches on it. It will be ready for Christmas, though. Until then, I thought we could go for some reruns. VOTE FOR NUTMEG!!! As for this comic... We return to the nerd store for a few comics. We were last inside this place almost three years ago, though I'm guessing it's only been a month or two in-universe. Time flies.

Looks like TWO shaggy’s to me….

  • KingMabel

Man, I wish I could wake up in the morning and just dress like a low-rent Brock from Pokemon. He has some decent threads.

I also haven’t commented in a few years, so I’ve left my lurking hole to say hi again.

    • ElectricGecko

Hey, a rare sighting of KingMabel! Thanks for coming out of the lurking hole!

But I must note that you CAN wake up in the morning and just dress like a low-rent Brock. Or low-rent Shaggy. You can. The only thing stopping you is good taste. And societal pressure. But if you ignore those things, it’s easy as pie.

    The new Xmas feature:

    Worst. Santa. EVER!!!
    😉

  • Thisguy

I can’t say I’ve ever been accused of being a “Shaggy”.
    I’m usually fairly neatly dressed.
Though the other week I was in a zoom call with work and I was said I looked like Ned Kelly with a bush ranger style beard.
I hadn’t shaved since around March, and my beard had grown out a lot.
I have since shaved and had a haircut and gone back to ‘smart office worker’ hair and beard.
Of course, it’s funny to note that the guy who said “Ned Kelly” was sporting a Chopper Reed style ‘satchel.

    • ElectricGecko

I strongly feel that this year doesn’t count. Everyone looks like a reject from Mad Max this year. It’s post-apocalypse lite!

      • HKMaly

I don’t think my look changed this year. Granted, I am on homeoffice for longer than that, so this is not as new for me as for others …

(My target for look is William T. Riker and I was told I’m not that much off.)

    • Carl Knoblock

My beard is getting quit long for me, but I’ve only been growing it out since June. My hair was getting so long I couldn’t stand it any more and cut it all down, so it’s easier to keep clean. That’s only the 3rd time I’ve cut it, and I hope to go back to the barber shop some day.

  • Animeswords

Now … I have to admit … I really want those planters.

You should make those for real and sell them on Etsy … but knowing Nintendo … they would shut it down fairly quickly … pity that =((

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, I’m not going into planter production. Besides, that’s the kind of thing that looks fun but few gardeners will purchase. Most gardeners are conservative older ladies who love lavender. They have little love of the Pokey Mans.

  • The issue probably hadn’t come up before Colin got out of bed.

  • Pattoo1234

You should add Cy to the character page!

  • Frank Harr

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd, that’s why you’re not Fred. Well, not OBVIOUSLY Fred. I mean, if we’re going for obvious here, not to put too fine point on it.

Seriously, Colin, this will work a lot better if you embrace your inner shaggy and PLAY Fred, not pretend you ARE him. If you want to be a supporting character.

I like the store front by the way. The turtlehead flowerpots are inspired.

    • Frank Harr

I don’t know what she did to get out of the Bad Corner, but Tracee’s scary, in a totally seasonally aprorpriate manner. 😉

I’m sure any mall would love to have the local mayor play Santa. I wonder why they haven’t before? Oh, right, most mayors or kind of sketchy. I mean, most Santas are too,m but at least they’re not public figures.

The above was only for humor. I’m sure the vast majority of the Santa community are fine, upstanding men, womwen and hermaphrodites. Please don’t hurt me.

    • ElectricGecko

Yeah, the fact that Colin doesn’t think when getting dressed makes him automatically more Shaggy than Fred.

And to keep the Pokemon people happy, let’s just replace ‘turtle’ with ‘bulbasaur’. Trust me: it’s best not to cross that fandom.

  • rewinn

As a “Dad-type figure” to two wonderful young ladies (daughters of my best ex, neither legally- nor bio-related to me at all), I heartily endorse your felicitous turn of phrase.

Family is complicated, but fatherhood is grrrreat!

    • ElectricGecko

Well, it’s echoing how Daphne introduced Colin to Cy in comic #432. But yeah, language fails sometimes with the complexity of family. This is a compromise. It works.

  • mermaidan

How is Phoebe’s relationship with her father? She would have been an interesting addition to the Voting Pic.

  • ChrisH

If Colin really wants to play Fred, he should start with a shave.

  • LaughingDemon

Shaggy isn’t someone you dress as. Shaggy is someone you simply are, or will become in time (and in fact, always have been).

    • ElectricGecko

It’s all in the lack of washing.

      • LaughingDemon

I do wash, but I DO forget (or not bother) to shave sometimes, and I do let my hair grow out, (it tangles worse when short) and I happen to have an affinity with the common canine. (Largely because I am generous with scraps of pizza crust and so on, and the dogs know this). Pretty sure what role I’m cast as.

  • LaughingDemon

A friend once joked that I was seen at the crossroads. I responded “I’m more of a ‘mall Satan’. You see, Satan oversees all of the underworld and deals for mortal souls all around the world, and sometimes, he needs helpers to act as go-betweens”. Sort of a spin on the mall Santa “Helper” speech.

  • Last Panel: Further proof you should be Shaggy? Of course, the “Shaggy” beard doesn’t help any.

  • JJR

He does not look like Shaggy to me.

  • Just Sumguy

Colin could definitely pull off being Fred in costume, if he put a few pounds of muscle on his frame, and tamed his proud Norse-Anglo-Celtic Lions mane.

  • DLKmusic

I still don’t get why he doesn’t want to be shaggy. Shaggy is happy, Shaggy makes friends everywhere and is the one who usually stumbles his way into saving the day.

I say, Shaggys of the world, UNITE!

    • ElectricGecko

Shaggy is one of the Jungian archetypes, I feel. And as Jung taught, you must accept those characters inside you and work to make peace with the components of your psyche. Colin is not there. He rejects the Shaggy inside him.

      • ChrisH

It seems to me, rather ironically, that Colin doesn’t do much thinking at any time.

        • ElectricGecko

The difference between Colin and your run-of-the-mill idiot is the fact that he is capable of thought. He’s not actually a dumb guy. He just chooses to generally not use that ability on a day-to-day basis.

          • Frank Harr

I think Colin saves most of his thinking for his classes. It’s just very stressful, so he leaves THAT Colin there to rest, recuperate and wander the halls happily, while the Colin that has to eat, sleep and raise his daughter goes home and wonders what’s going on.

By the way, back when my uncle was teaching, he’s wear a Santa hat on the last day of class. He still gets to wear one on Christmas day.

          • ElectricGecko

I never wear a Santa hat. Ever. I’m not that jolly.

          • Frank Harr

“I never wear a Santa hat. Ever. I’m not that jolly.”

You also don’t have the head-shape for it. You wouldn’t be able to see a thing.

      • Frank Harr

Indeed. And then he can pretend to be Fred. Whereas, Tyler IS a Fred.

And that’s appropriate, as Colin is a majo character in this story.

  • Drakeye

the sas is strong in this one…

    • ElectricGecko

That honestly applies to all my characters. I just can’t seem to avoid giving them sass. Even Phoebe seems to sometimes pop off the odd zinger.

  • ChrisH

Everyone is sassy at some point. I mean IRL. 🙂

  • ComicReader

I still love the Bulbasaur plant pots xx 😀

  • Adam Cat

Though he may dream the dreams of a Fred, his subconscious betrays him a Shaggy.
